Automobile controls and interfaces are continuing to go digital. While the past few years have seen the digitization of the center stack in cars, particularly in infotainment, there will be increasing digitalization of almost all touch points. A variety of cost effective screen technologies, like OLED and QLED, will bring more information and visualization capabilities to car displays. Despite auto purists complaints about touch controls over real knobs and buttons, the likelihood is that touch will see more prevalence in the years ahead, given advances in haptic feedback and the ability to contextualize controls to combine knobs and dials with digital interfaces.

Valeo are responsible for the first ultrasonic parking sensors back in 1991. They have supplied park assist technology to more than 12 million cars and have sold over 25 million stop/start packages to manufacturers. They are leaders in autonomous vehicle sensor cleaning systems. Apparently, your fancy new self driving car will simply come to a stop if its array of sensors are not squeaky clean. Who knew!

Numerous automakers from Ford to Tesla have adopted some form of automated parking into their cars in recent years, which makes sense: it's arguably one of the smartest applications of self-driving technology. There's plenty of drivers that do a terrible job at manoeuvring their car into a parking garage spot, and it could free up additional space in parking garages. But what's strange is how, despite being equipped on numerous luxury vehicles, it doesn't seem to be widely used.

The Robomarts work using NVidia’s Inception program to run their autonomous fleet. Using a combination of sensors and cameras, both inside and outside the car, the vehicle can move from place to place, allowing people to shop without the need of staff or even a cashier. The car itself can be customized to show off its partner company’s branding, while the shelves on the inside come with customizable tags, allowing you to display anything from baked goods, to fast food, to groceries, to even flowers. The car’s interiors stay refrigerated to make sure your food stays fresh.

So Mercedes-Benz brings their Smart Vision EQ Concept to CES, and they shut down part of the Las Vegas Strip for it…if you haven’t seen it already, then you’ll understand why this was completely acceptable. An all-electric, completely autonomous car, built for personalization without actual ownership – the Smart Vision EQ Concept lacks both a steering wheel and pedals.

The advent of the automobile, Hackett explained, ushered in an era when “roads that were built for cars replaced streets intended for living.” Now, as the world progresses toward smarter cities, Ford has committed itself to developing innovative technologies that will give urban spaces back to the people. Working with architects, designers, technologists, and urban planners, Ford is charting a “human-centered course forward.” “It’s not about the city getting smarter; it’s about humans having a better day,” Hackett said.

R&D at Panasonic have decided to ask the question, "what happens when we are no longer driving?" This idea of the level 5 autonomous vehicle has come up time and time again this year at CES. The question is no longer if we will have autonomous vehicles but rather how companies can design experiences around them.

Located in each wheel section, each time the wheels turn, the horizontal-axis turbines are activated. This produces electricity that can then be used to power other features like cabin lighting, entertainment systems, headlights and more. The energy created can also be harnessed and stored in the battery for enhanced range.

At the epicenter of all three revolutions, Valeo began preparing for these emerging needs and usage patterns back in 2009, and we have continued to invest massively in R&D. For Valeo, an electric vehicle holds seven times the equipment potential of a present-day conventional car. For an autonomous car, the potential is ten times higher. Valeo is able to sustain very strong growth momentum because of its expertise and innovation capacity. What does this mean exactly?

CES and electric cars are a natural fit. Big automakers like to show off their commitment to battery and plug-in hybrid technology to help offset the gas-guzzling reality we’re living in. And smaller, Tesla-aspiring startups see it as their opportunity to make a splash in the big kid pool.

Just earlier today, Valeo, the automotive parts giant, announced that it had acquiredgestigon, a startup out of Germany that develops in-car 3D image processing software used both to communicate to the driver as well as pick up signals from within the car and from the driver to communicate to a self-driving (or partially self-driving)car what to do next. Terms of the deal, which includes staff as well as IP, were not disclosed. Valeo has been a regular investor in autonomous driving tech, taking a stake, for example, in French autonomous shuttle company Navya and getting a license in California to test self-driving cars. This latest acquisition shows that it remains serious about doing more in this area.

At CES 2018, List’s demonstration will feature different objects, such as miniature cars, moving into the camera’s field of view, where DeepManta will recognise them. When a car is identified, the algorithm generates a visual annotation, labelling the car with the logo of the brand and model information, and encompassing it with 2D and 3D boxes to locate it spatially in the video in real time. The autonomous driving implications of DeepManta will also be demonstrated by Valeo, a global automotive supplier and a partner of List, at the show in Las Vegas.
