Vapes could harm your blood vessels, even if they're nicotine-free

Vapes could harm your blood vessels, even if they're nicotine-free | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

A study published online in the journal Radiology on Tuesday, August 20, found that smoking e-cigarettes can damage blood vessels and impair blood flow — even if the e-liquid doesn’t contain nicotine. The findings challenge long-held claims that e-cigarettes are healthier alternatives to real cigarettes. The research emerges on the heels of the Center for Disease Control’s statement on August 17 that it would be investigating 94 potential cases of severe lung illness in 14 states — mainly among adolescents and young adults — which appear to be connected to vaping. Some of those affected have even been hooked up to ventilators, the Washington Post reports.

Can You Get Addicted to Vaping?

Can You Get Addicted to Vaping? | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

When the first e-cigarettes were introduced to the U.S. in 2006, vaping was considered a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes. In fact, the first commercially successful e-cigarette was invented by a man in China when his father died of lung cancer after years of heavy smoking. The science, however, tells a very different story. Vaping has been linked to lung damage, brain alterations, heart disease, and other conditions. The FDA even gave e-cigarette maker Juul a slap on the wrist for marketing their products as safer than cigarettes without research to back up the claim. Although e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco or the thousands of chemicals found in traditional cigarettes, they do contain nicotine, which is extremely addictive, especially for teens and adolescents.

A comparison of levels of biomarkers of tobacco-related exposure collected in clinical studies revealed that the use of e-cigarettes and HTPs could lead to a significant reduction in exposure to harmful substances compared to combusted cigarettes. In tandem, the health status of e-cigarettes and HTP users, indexed by levels of biomarkers of biological effect showed potential for improvement compared to smoking. However, larger and longer-term population-based studies are needed to further clarify these findings.
