I recall with trepidation my peritoneal dialysis assessment at Kenyatta National Hospital. To be fair, practical exams always freaked me out. They still do. No idea how I pass. I am a fairly stable nurse in practice but the idea of following all rules while a towering mount of an assessor is on my neck sends shock waves down my already stiff spine. If that assessor is as thorough and committed as the one we had for peritoneal dialysis, you are bound to swallow your tongue.

Based on the obtained results, the evaluated telemonitoring system holds wide acceptance, satisfaction, and applicability from patients’ and doctors’ perspectives. It is also noted that the evaluated system considers and satisfies the requirements and suitable parameters that should be monitored in PD treatment according to studies presented in the literature.

Whereas there was no meaningful survival difference in the first 12 months between HHD and PD, patients who transitioned to PD after 12 months of dialysis had worse survival than their HHD counterparts. Additional studies are warranted to investigate clinical implications of these differences.

Accurate comparisons of haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) survival based on observational studies are difficult due to substantial residual confounding that arises from imbalances between treatments. Propensity score matching (PSM) comparisons confer additional advantages over conventional methods of adjustment by further reducing selection bias between treatments.

Gram-positive organisms remained major cause of PD-related peritonitis. About three quarters of causative pathogens were susceptible to the recommended empirical treatment for PD-related peritonitis. Baseline hyponatremia (<130 mmol/L) was independently associated with refractory peritonitis. Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli infections had important roles for refractory peritonitis.

Insight Space - Northwest Insights is looking for an in home caregiver for someone on peritoneal dialysis. We are conducting a paid research study for people who care for individuals with this condition. These sessions will be conducted remotely via your computer/laptop, and will run 90 minutes. You will be paid $150 for your thoughts, and opinions. If you are interested in participating, please sign up and take the survey to see if you qualify!

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with end‐stage renal disease. Heart rhythm complexity analysis has been shown to be useful in predicting outcomes in various diseases; however, data on patients with end‐stage renal disease are limited. In this study, we analyzed the association between heart rhythm complexity and long‐term cardiovascular outcomes in patients with end‐stage renal disease receiving peritoneal dialysis.

Our results suggest that the application of mupirocin ointment appeared to minimize peritonitis of patients colonized with S. aureus. The use of mupirocin in this patient cohort has not led to mupirocin resistance. The increased peritonitis rate of patients who grew Pseudomonas or enteric organisms is of interest. We propose that greater attention to hygiene and catheter care in these patients is warranted. The increasing use of paid healthcare workers attending patients daily to help perform PD (assisted PD) gives an opportunity for us to address these wider issues.

PD is a risk factor for emergency hospitalization and mortality associated with CVDs in dialysis patients with ESKD. Strict control of body fluid balance may prevent cardiovascular events in patients undergoing PD.

Fatigue is a common symptom in peritoneal dialysis patients, suggesting that increased awareness of this symptom is required. The identification of correlates by extensive exploration of multidimensional factors in this study may help practitioners to identify patients at higher risk and to develop a multidimensional and targeted intervention plan.

There has been little research on strategies for prevention of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis. We explored whether regular retraining on bag exchanges (via two methods: technique inspection and oral education) every other month could help reduce the risk of peritonitis in PD patients through a randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have a high incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, which is related to the inflammatory status of this population. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a relatively new indicator of inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PLR and the CVD events in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients.

Several reports on patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) treated by peritoneal dialysis (PD) have shown a higher risk of PD-associated peritonitis compared to non-DM (NDM) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of PD-associated peritonitis in DM patients.

Malnutrition and low body mass are associated with higher mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD). The Canada-USA (CANUSA) PD study showed that there was a 3% increase in the relative risk of death with a 1% lower lean body mass [1]. In contrast, the relationship of obesity with survival in the PD population is unclear.

The study showed around a 50% increase in home dialysis after the payment reforms compared with before, but only around 12% of patients in the United States started dialysis at home. Rates of home dialysis are much higher in other nations, including Hong Kong (70%), Mexico (51%), New Zealand (30%), Sweden (21%), and Canada (19%).

- After a Medicare payment policy related to dialysis was implemented in 2011, use of home-based peritoneal dialysis increased significantly
- Increases were seen for both “early” and “late” peritoneal dialysis: more patients initiated dialysis with peritoneal dialysis and more patients switched from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis.

Researchers are testing the potential of an Automated Wearable Artificial Kidney (AWAK) device for peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatments, which would allow dialysis to be performed on-the-go, overcoming the challenge of long hours of therapy and connection to large dialysis machines. A sorbent-based regenerative technology in the AWAK PD therapy allows for high dose dialysis to be delivered with a low volume of dialysis solution. The technology regenerates and reconstitutes used dialysis fluid into fresh fluid while removing toxins.

The team will report that UC San Francisco scientists have successfully implanted a prototype kidney bioreactor containing functional human kidney cells into pigs without significant safety concerns. The device, which is about the size of a deck of cards, did not trigger an immune reaction or cause blood clots in the animals, an important milestone on the road to future human trials.

Per a newly released global report called The Global Kidney Health Atlas, nearly one-in-ten people worldwide have chronic kidney disease [1]. As chronic kidney disease progresses into end-state kidney disease, patients need a kidney transplant or some form of dialysis to survive. The number of patients requiring these treatments is estimated to be about 1.4 million worldwide and is growing at 8% annually [2]. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is the main type of peritoneal dialysis (PD) used in developing countries by >80%, while in developed countries it is slightly more than half of the population [3].
