Applying self‐determination theory towards motivational factors of physical activity in people undergoing haemodialyses | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

The level of physical activity of people undergoing haemodialyses is low, so understanding what factors underlie the motivation to be physically active in people undergoing haemodialyses is important. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to explore the different motivation types and corresponding basic psychological needs (BPNs) of people undergoing haemodialyses based on self-determination theory.

Renal Rehabilitation: Exercise Intervention and Nutritional Support in Dialysis Patients

Renal Rehabilitation: Exercise Intervention and Nutritional Support in Dialysis Patients | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

With the growing number of dialysis patients with frailty, the concept of renal rehabilitation, including exercise intervention and nutrition programs for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), has become popular recently. Renal rehabilitation is a comprehensive multidisciplinary program for CKD patients that is led by doctors, rehabilitation therapists, diet nutritionists, nursing specialists, social workers, pharmacists, and therapists. Many observational studies have observed better outcomes in CKD patients with more physical activity. Furthermore, recent systematic reviews have shown the beneficial effects of exercise intervention on exercise tolerance, physical ability, and quality of life in dialysis patients, though the beneficial effect on overall mortality remains unclear. Nutritional support is also fundamental to renal rehabilitation.

Study Shows Gout is Likely Under-Reported in Dialysis Populations

Study Shows Gout is Likely Under-Reported in Dialysis Populations | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

“Given the clinical importance of gout in patients with kidney failure (KF) on dialysis, there remains an important unmet need to assess its prevalence and impact on key clinical and PROs, as well as to describe urate lowering therapy (ULT) practice patterns in KF populations,” investigators wrote. “We sought to address these objectives to further characterize the clinical impact of gout on individuals living with KF undergoing kidney replacement therapy (KRT).”

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) became an alternative to haemodialysis in the 1980s. Many patients prefer the independence it brings. Since you don’t have to have dialysis sessions at a dialysis unit, you can give yourself treatments at home, at work or on holiday. But this independence makes it especially important that you work closely with your healthcare team: your GP, nephrologist (kidney doctor), dialysis nurse, dialysis technician, dietitian and social worker. Some people find the overnight PD machine a bit noisy but many get used to it and are able to sleep during the session.

The Effects of Indobufen on Micro-Inflammation and Peritoneal Transport Function in Patients Undergoing Continuous Ambulate Peritoneal Dialysis

The Effects of Indobufen on Micro-Inflammation and Peritoneal Transport Function in Patients Undergoing Continuous Ambulate Peritoneal Dialysis | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

Microinflammation and peritoneal fibrosis can lead to peritoneal failure in CAPD. Indobufen is a novel antiplatelet drug that can alleviate renal fibrosis and improve renal function in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Indobufen can improve the peritoneal transport function in patients undergoing CAPD. The mechanism of indobufen improving the peritoneal function might be related to the improvement of the microinflammatory state and peritoneal fibrosis.

Considering the findings of this study and the novelty of the subject, and the fact that mupirocin causes antimicrobial resistance and is more expensive than propolis, there is some room to hope that using propolis as alternative medicine may reduce treatment costs and help avoid causing antimicrobial resistance.

“Priced out of existence” – the true cost of living for people with kidney disease

“Priced out of existence” – the true cost of living for people with kidney disease | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

When you’re struggling to deal with kidney disease, the additional pressures of trying to make ends meet and keeping your utilities on can make life very difficult. As many of you will know, people with CKD are anaemic and frequently feel cold, even in a warm room. Extreme fatigue often associated with CKD exacerbates this and makes it more difficult for people to keep themselves warm. The impact this has on heating bills is particularly felt by those who cannot work due to their condition.

Peritoneal Dialysis Prescription and Adequacy in Clinical Practice

Peritoneal Dialysis Prescription and Adequacy in Clinical Practice | Peritoneal dialysis | Scoop.it

As the global prevalence of peritoneal dialysis (PD) continues to grow, practitioners must be equipped with prescribing strategies that focus on the needs and preferences of patients. PD is an effective form of kidney replacement therapy that offers numerous benefits to patients, including more flexibility in schedules compared with in-center hemodialysis (HD). Additional benefits of PD include salt and water removal without significant changes in patient hemodynamics. This continuous yet gentle removal of solutes and fluid is associated with better-preserved residual kidney function. Unfortunately, sometimes these advantages are overlooked at the expense of an emphasis on achieving small solute clearance targets.

The first successful kidney transplant took place in 1954, using a live donor's twin brother.
