T-Mobile announced in a press release that it's working with Miller Electric Company to bring fully autonomous shuttles to a three-mile strip in Jacksonville. These bus-shaped shuttles will use T-Mobile's Advanced Network Solutions (ANS) to connect to a private 5G network, as the companies say that existing standards, such as Wi-Fi, aren't as reliable or scalable as 5G.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday said the electric vehicle maker will roll out driverless ride-hailing services to the public in California and Texas next year, a claim likely to face significant regulatory and technical challenges. “We think that we’ll be able to have driverless Teslas doing paid rides next year,” Musk said on Tesla’s quarterly earnings call. He said Tesla currently offers an app-based ride-hailing service, with a safety driver, to employees in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Debate around safety was sparked in April when a Huawei-backed Aito car was involved in a fatal accident, with the company saying its automatic braking system failed. A minor collision between a jaywalker and a Wuhan robotaxi last month re-ignited concerns. Taxi drivers and workers in traditional ride-hailing companies have also raised fears of being replaced by artificial intelligence — although the technology is far from fully developed.

In 2014, rumors started to circulate that Apple was developing a self-driving autonomous car to compete with Tesla. At the end of February 2024, rumors circulated that Apple was shutting down “Project Titan,” its car program. According to multiple media outlets, the only logical conclusion from the project’s death is that this decision signals the beginning of the end of Apple. As much as I enjoy hyperbole and unnecessary drama, the truth is far more mundane. The decision was just another day in the life of an innovation.

The US has already sought to limit the entry of Chinese-made electric vehicles, levying tariffs of more than 100%, and President Joe Biden’s clean energy bill makes it more difficult for automakers to use batteries manufactured in Asia’s biggest economy. With tensions between Washington and Beijing running high, those concerns are now bleeding into Chinese autonomous vehicle software.

According to Autocar, the upcoming Volvo EX90 may not initially come with promised upgrades, including "some safety functions". The seven-seater is set to hit UK showrooms in October, but it seems the full spec won't be available for a little while afterwards. The report suggests that some of the advanced driver assistance (ADA) systems won't be present in the first deliveries. It is expected that drivers will not have access to the system that automatically hits the brakes if a hazard is detected at a junction.

Ever since built-in internet connectivity was added to vehicles, conspiracy theorists kept saying that the government would eventually overreach and try to limit everyone's personal mobility. They were wrong. To this day, those beliefs remain a blatant exaggeration. It's the other way around if you think about it. But that doesn't mean the future can't be full of surprises. Until we get to see what legislators and regulators from a dystopian tomorrow have in store for us all, let's figure out the truth behind the latest legislative confusion that's worrying new car buyers living on the right side of the pond.

The transaction was cleared under merger control as it was “not expected to significantly impede effective competition,” the German Federal Cartel Office announced. That applies “regardless of whether the relevant market is considered to consist of the E/E architecture as a whole or of various sub-systems and sub-services. There will still be a sufficient range of services available to car manufacturers to build E/E architectures,” the authority continues. A relevant impairment of the innovation competition for E/E architectures is unlikely.

Modern cars are laden down with all sorts of connected features. Remote start via cell phone, data connections for built-in apps, cars are increasingly reliant on mobile networks for full functionality — mobile networks that can, and eventually will, shut down. When those systems go dark, what happens to the cars?

Tesla has issued a recall for 1,849,638 vehicles that may have a software failure that means an unlatched hood may go undetected, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall extends to the entire lineup, with the Model 3, Model X, Model S, and Model Y vehicles being affected. The Cybertruck is not part of this recall.

The agency notes that driving a vehicle with an unlocked hood can obstruct the driver's view if the hood opens inadvertently, increasing the risk of a crash. As a result, Tesla must provide an over-the-air update for the affected software covering approximately 1.85 million vehicles. This action affects "S", "X" and "3" models manufactured since 2021, as well as "Y" vehicles manufactured since 2020. This is not the first time the electric car maker has faced a software problem. In December, Tesla was forced to update about two million vehicles in the United States and Canada to address the increased risk of crashes associated with "Autopilot," a controversial driver-assistance system.
