Millennials in West see 70% explosion in strokes

Millennials in West see 70% explosion in strokes | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

Now ranging in age from 27 to 42, Millennials are suffering strokes at higher rates than their forebears did at the same age, reversing a 40-year decline in stroke deaths. Between 2003 and 2012, there was a 32% spike in strokes among 18- to 34-year-old women and a 15% increase for men in the same age range, according to CDC researchers. When Scientific American further parsed the data, they found that the hike was mostly centered in the West and Midwest, where stroke rates among young people rose 70% and 34%, respectively, with particularly sharp increases in urban areas. Now, about one in ten people who has a stroke in the U.S. is under the age of 45.

Why are Millennials having so many strokes? | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

Now ranging in age from 27 to 42, Millennials are suffering strokes at higher rates than their forebears did at the same age. Childhood obesity may be the biggest contributor to early stroke, and Millennials were the first generation truly to be affected by this alarming trend. Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1978. The best solution to reverse the rise in early stroke is for Millennials and future generations to eat right and exercise, especially from a young age.

The authors aim to investigate retrospectively the association between acupuncture and risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, AF patients without any acupuncture treatment record were classified as non-acupuncture cohort and 1:1 matching with acupuncture cohort by age, gender, and all comorbidities. To calculate the risk of stroke in case and control groups, cox proportional hazard models were used and presented by hazard ratios, adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

What are blood types?-What your blood type says about stroke risk

What are blood types?-What your blood type says about stroke risk | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

According to a new study, your blood type can predict if you are at the risk of having an early stroke. When an ischemic stroke occurs, the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, which prevents brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. This can cause brain cells to die in minutes.

Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage - 2022 AHA/ASA Guidelines

While most strokes we see are ischemic in nature, 10% of stroke presentations are intracerebral hemorrhages (ICH) 1. However, unlike ischemic strokes that have clear and evolving pathways for treatments, novel treatments for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages (ICH) are lacking. Because of this, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association created guideline recommendations for the management of spontaneous ICH. This blog post will provide you with a focused review of this evidence tailored to the emergency clinician.

What are the symptoms of a Brain Stroke?

What are the symptoms of a Brain Stroke?  | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

A stroke is a potentially fatal disorder that develops when insufficient blood flow to a specific brain area. The most frequent causes of this are a blocked artery or brain hemorrhage. The brain cells in that region start to die from a lack of oxygen if there isn’t a constant flow of blood. A disturbance in blood flow can cut off crucial oxygen and glucose to the brain, resulting in brain death within minutes.

After nearly four decades of decline, stroke mortality risk appears to be increasing again in the U.S. | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

Total stroke deaths fell despite the rise in age-adjusted risk because stroke rates skyrocket as people get older. A 10 percent reduction in the fatality rate for 75-year-olds would more than offset a doubling of the fatality rate among 35-year-olds because strokes are 100 times more common in 75-year-olds.

Recent Advances of Cell Membrane Coated Nanoparticles in Treating Cardiovascular Disorders

Recent Advances of Cell Membrane Coated Nanoparticles in Treating Cardiovascular Disorders | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, causing approximately 17.9 million deaths annually, an estimated 31% of all deaths, according to the WHO. CVDs are essentially rooted in atherosclerosis and are clinically classified into coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disorders. Current clinical interventions include early diagnosis, the insertion of stents, and long-term preventive therapy. However, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic tools are subject to a number of limitations including, but not limited to, potential toxicity induced by contrast agents and unexpected bleeding caused by anti-platelet drugs. Nanomedicine has achieved great advancements in biomedical area. Among them, cell membrane coated nanoparticles, denoted as CMCNPs, have acquired enormous expectations due to their biomimetic properties.

Magnesium and the Brain: A Focus on Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration

Magnesium and the Brain: A Focus on Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration | Neurovascular Intervention | Scoop.it

Magnesium (Mg) is involved in the regulation of metabolism and in the maintenance of the homeostasis of all the tissues, including the brain, where it harmonizes nerve signal transmission and preserves the integrity of the blood–brain barrier. Mg deficiency contributes to systemic low-grade inflammation, the common denominator of most diseases. In particular, neuroinflammation is the hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders. Starting from a rapid overview on the role of magnesium in the brain, this narrative review provides evidences linking the derangement of magnesium balance with multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases.
