Gad Saad warns ‘suicidal empathy’ is pushing the West toward collapse

Gad Saad warns ‘suicidal empathy’ is pushing the West toward collapse | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
From reactions to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks to gender ideology and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), author and scholar Gad Saad warns that Western civilization is on the brink of collapse. In his new book, “Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind,” Saad argues that the West has taken compassion to a dangerous place by prioritizing ideological virtue-signaling over truth and common sense.

“I’m not in the least bit arguing that empathy is a bad thing, but just like Aristotle explained to us several millennia ago, all good things in moderation,” Saad told Fox News Digital.

“If you’re not in the least bit empathetic, you’re likely to be a psychopath, if you are too empathetic, if it hyperactivates, if it targets the wrong people in the wrong circumstances, then that becomes suicidal empathy,” he explained.

Why Does a Curriculum That Looks Perfect on Paper Falter in the Classroom?  Empathy and Iteration

Why Does a Curriculum That Looks Perfect on Paper Falter in the Classroom?  Empathy and Iteration | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it

by  Ayşe Betül Akdemir

Most of us have written a curriculum document that looked coherent on paper and then watched it falter in the first week of teaching. The plan was logical, the outcomes were measurable, the sequencing made sense – and yet students arrived with experiences, questions, and silences we hadn’t seen coming. When this happens, we usually blame the implementation. What if we reconsidered the design logic itself?

In my recent IETI article, I argue that two habits – empathy and iteration – can reshape how educators approach curriculum work, not only in major redesign projects but in the weekly choices we make as teachers.

Empathy as an ongoing stance, not a first step
Design thinking treats empathy as the opening move: interview learners, map their needs, then move on. But in a study with 61 international students in higher education, I found that the most consequential gaps between curriculum and learner experience surfaced after the course had begun – when students ran into tasks, texts, and expectations the design had not predicted for them. Empathy works better as something we keep doing than as a box we tick at the start.

To Empathize Does Not Mean to Join in Suffering

“To empathize does not mean to join in suffering, for that is what you must refuse to understand.”

Now look up empathy in the dictionary. What you’ll find is this: empathy is the feeling that you understand and share another person’s experiences and emotions.

One term of empathy training measurably improved classroom behaviour

One term of empathy training measurably improved classroom behaviour | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
A study involving 900 students in 6 countries found that a short programme of empathy lessons led to measurable, positive changes in their conduct, emotional awareness and curiosity about different cultures.

An analysis of a short programme teaching empathy in schools has found it had a positive impact on students’ behaviour and increased their emotional literacy within 10 weeks.

The findings come from an evaluation of the 'Empathy Programme': a term-long course developed by the UK-based Empathy Studios. The research was conducted with support from academics at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge.

Early-career researchers want empathy from their supervisors | Science | AAAS

A: The main results can be simplified into one word, which is empathy. If a supervisor is empathetic, this supervisor will understand personal situations of the early-career researchers in their group. They will understand that they have to be supportive, not treat people like production units of papers, but instead like colleagues who are at a different stage of their career. This shouldn’t be shocking. But it seems like sometimes we need to remind people that they need to be empathetic towards those working in their groups.

Q: What does that look like in practice? Are there specific ways supervisors can show empathy?

Empathy over judgment: Obama urged liberals not to label all Trump voters as racist, saying many act out of economic desperation and a search for alternatives.

Call for solutions: Obama stressed the need for leaders to address middle- and working-class struggles to prevent 'bad choices' driven by lack of opportunity.

What We Get Wrong About Empathy

What We Get Wrong About Empathy   | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
Even when we try to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, we’re often missing the deeper frameworks that shape how they think and act.

In this lecture, Konner Brewer, Stanford Lecturer and Product Manager for Applied AI at Google, explores why understanding others is more complex than it seems. Through case studies and classic experiments, she reveals a key insight: people can’t always explain why they do what they do.

Instead, we rely on stories - our own and others’ - to make sense of behavior. This talk challenges conventional ideas of empathy, because in a globalized world, if we want to truly connect with others, it’s not enough to feel what we would feel in their position, we have to learn how to see the world as they do.

The Empathy Deficit: How Digital Life is Numbing Our Collective Heart

The Empathy Deficit: How Digital Life is Numbing Our Collective Heart | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
Empathy—the ability to sense another's emotions, to imagine their inner world, to feel with them—is not a decorative feature of human consciousness. It is the foundational architecture upon which relationships, communities, and civilizations are built. It is what stops a hand mid-strike, what draws us toward a stranger's tears, what compels sacrifice for unseen others. And it is facing an existential threat from the very tools designed to bring us together.

Empathy: A Superpower To Use At Work

Empathy: A Superpower To Use At Work | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
Empathy gets a bad rap.

But of all the superpowers a leader can project, empathy is at the top of the list as one of the most powerful traits. Empathy is a strength, not a weakness.

Empathetic leaders tend to be highly successful in the workplace because they take the time to understand what others are feeling and thinking about. When your team understands they are working with an empathetic leader, they are more likely to share ideas, collaborate and be honest about the direction a project takes or its outcome.

Letter to the Editor: Suicidal empathy is destroying our community

Letter to the Editor: Suicidal empathy is destroying our community   | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
Suicidal empathy has replaced rational thought and in fact reality in our community. Ideology and the desire not to offend have supplanted common sense. Citizens are witness to the destruction of the very fabric of their community every day.

Everyone is not a victim. The “victimhood industry” is excusing bad behaviour in our community. Victimhood has been elevated to a virtue. Organizations are heavily funded (often by taxpayer dollars), within this industry and do not generate measurable results.

Summer Camps to Receive Empathy Curricula From After Children Reportedly Kill Rooster

Summer Camps to Receive Empathy Curricula From After Children Reportedly Kill Rooster | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it
Following reports that children allegedly beat a rooster to death at Lake Texoma over the Fourth of July weekend, TeachKind—PETA’s humane education division—is rushing emergency resources to local summer camps and other youth programs. The package will include empathy-building curricula with an urgent letter stressing the need for lessons that condemn violence and foster empathy for all living beings. PETA also plans to erect a sky-high message in the area asking residents who suspect any young person of abusing animals to contact TeachKind for free resources that help parents and educators cultivate compassion.

According to news reports, the rooster—identified as “Rusty the Rooster”—had become a familiar sight to visitors at Lake Texoma. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

In Disclosure Day, Spielberg’s camera is Margaret Fairchild, an ordinary woman made extraordinary by the extraterrestrial gift of embodying human empathy. The aliens abducted her as a child and imbued her with the power to give others what they’ve given her: tenderness as an elixir for despair

Empathy fatigue does not typically present as disengagement. Instead, it shows up as cognitive and emotional narrowing. Practitioners may become more focused on resolution than exploration, rely more heavily on precedent than context, and show reduced tolerance for ambiguity. In this state, there can be a stronger pull towards control, tightening processes, streamlining decisions or seeking to limit further escalation.

The Year Empathy Died: Christians Against Empathy Aren’t Who They Think They Are: By David French, New York Times

The Year Empathy Died: Christians Against Empathy Aren’t Who They Think They Are: By David French, New York Times  | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it

Now let’s talk about empathy.

A year ago this month, I wrote a newsletter warning about a new trend on the MAGA Christian right. Christian theologians and influencers had begun warning about the “sin of empathy” or “toxic empathy.”....

The problem in those cases isn’t with empathy, which is a vital human virtue, but rather in its selective application. Just as we wouldn’t call love a sin because we might be stingy in our love, empathy isn’t a sin because its application is incomplete.

Or, put another way, our problem isn’t with too much empathy, but too little. We’re unwilling to place ourselves in other people’s shoes, to try to understand who they are and what their lives are like.

It’s hard to talk about this issue without recognizing a fundamental truth of the moment: The attack on empathy would have gained very little traction in the church if Donald Trump weren’t president. He delights in vengeance, and he owes his presidency to the evangelical church.

How Leaders Can Practice Wise Empathy

How Leaders Can Practice Wise Empathy | Teaching Empathy | Scoop.it

by Nick Hobson and Gregory J. Depow

Empathy has become a baseline expectation of modern leadership, but practiced without judgment it can backfire, leaving leaders depleted and employees feeling misunderstood. Effective leadership requires a more discerning approach: wise empathy, which recognizes that different emotional moments call for different responses.

Sharing in employees’ negative emotions can accelerate burnout, while responding to those with compassion and support can protect both leaders and teams. The opposite is often true for positive emotions, which benefit from shared celebration. If leaders take five steps designed to guide them in the practice of wise empathy, they can strengthen relationships, improve engagement and retention, and support others without losing their own footing
