The Applied Compassion Training Program™ (ACT) is an 11-month deep dive into the embodied experience of becoming a compassion change agent.
The ultimate aim of Applied Compassion Training is to prepare people who feel an urgency to bring forth and integrate compassionate action into their occupations, professions, communities and institutions, as well as into their personal development.

Unlike other teacher training programs, ACT offers participants a chance to apply compassion in practice during the program and use the dialogue, skill-building, and tools in real-time. Participants who successfully complete ACT will be in a variety of fields. ACT creates AMBASSADORS of compassion in many fields, including educators, facilitators, consultants, physicians, nurses, coaches, and leaders of all kinds. Ambassadors of Applied Compassion will be representatives, advocates, and stewards of compassion.

ACT helps bring forth people who will embody a high level of mastery and expertise in facilitating a compassionate response in real-world settings. Graduates will leave this training with the mindset, heart set, and skillset they need to effectively work for and sustain transformative change within a multiplicity of community and organizational settings.

Empathy Academy is an online learning community devoted to clear and practical education about emotions, empathy, communication, and community.

We offer online courses for people with busy lives. There are no tests or extensive homework, and you can learn on your own time in a welcoming and empathic group of fellow learners.

Each course contains online curriculum that you can read on your own schedule (there are very few deadlines), and a community forum where you can connect with your fellow learners and instructors (again, on your own time). Many courses also include weekly Zoom webinars so that you and your learning community can get together in real time, face to face.

Empathy and compassion are fundamental to society, not least in professions characterized by and dependent on the quality of human interactions. This workshop explores empathy and compassion through the combined lenses of science and arts. How can contemplation, art, music and dance become means of deepening the understanding and enhancing the practices of empathy and compassion?

What happens in the workshop?

• Lecture by keynote speaker (Jeremy Howick), designed to inform and motivate attendees to improve empathic care.

• Brainstorming session in pairs (or small groups, depending on room layout) on barriers to empathy and how to remove them

• Evidence-based empathic behaviours

• Self-empathy (required to give empathy to others)

• On the alleged dangers of being too empathic

• Being empathic in difficult cases (including end-of-life)

• ‘Deep’ empathy (cultivating presence and emotional curiosity).

Jackie Acho founded The Acho Group, a strategy and leadership consulting firm, in 2005. She has worked for technology, industrial, academic, nonprofit, and economic development clients on a variety of issues, with particular focus on growth and innovation, strategy, and leadership development for more than 25 years. Her current work includes empathy-centered cultural transformation with the Cleveland Police, which will be the focus of her presentation as part of the Chautauqua Lecture Series.

She is the author of Currency of Empathy — The Secret to Thriving in Business & Life. About Empathy School:
FuelEd’s Empathy School is a training on the art and science of effective listening. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s feelings or perspective and to communicate understanding to that person. Research demonstrates that when teachers and school leaders are more empathic, relationships are more productive and satisfying, resulting in a healthy school culture where students and adults thrive.

Empathy School combines interactive activities, group discussion, skills training, role-play, and reflection to help educators master the four components of empathy:

• taking others’ perspective,
• recognizing others’ feelings,
• communicating understanding of others’ feelings,
• and staying out of judgment.

 
However, I would add that though empathy is a necessary factor for success in many areas of life, it may not be sufficient by itself. It is what you do with the empathy—the action. That is, you could use your empathy to understand others, but not convey it. Or, you could use it to understand people well enough to manipulate them to your advantage, even to a sociopathic degree. Or, much better yet, we can resolve to use it for more healing action this year.
