Empathy is Everything.

Empathy is Everything. | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
I was studying empathy last night. We've been really trying to teach empathy over here and we are far from perfect. I'm reading that empathy is taught and shown by action. Empathy is shown in the way a parent responds to a infants cry or a toddlers whine, knowing for a fact it means that the child needs something.

It might be as small as eye contact, touch, or an embrace. Empathy is not choosing what is convenient or easiest, but revels in a heart to heart connection. Empathy is shown by caring for a three year old's needs and desires, even if it's the most ridiculous request. I'm not saying to respond Yes to everything, that's not what I mean, but rather hearing their needs and being able to talk through a solution creatively. To hear their hearts.

Empathy can exclude as much as it unites - Thot Cursus

Empathy can exclude as much as it unites - Thot Cursus | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Empathy is a human mechanism, like attention. It's part of our ability to understand the emotions of others. The problem is that it's heavily biased by our environment.

This biased selection of empathy makes it easy for specialists to dehumanize groups by attributing negative or even animal characteristics to them. Take, for example, the discourse surrounding the presence of Arabs in France, Canada or the United States. They are seen as a problem, and their suffering is systematically denied. This sometimes even serves as a way for groups to victimize themselves over minor or even non-existent phenomena, such as those crying "anti-white" racism as soon as a criticism is made of the white population or an actor of color is cast in a role.

Radical Empathy

Radical Empathy | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Structural racism has impacted the lives of African Americans in the United States since before the country's founding. Although the country has made some progress towards a more equal society, political developments in the 21st century have shown that deep divides remain. The persistence of inequality is an indicator of the stubborn resilience of the institutions that maintain white supremacy.

To bridge our divides, renowned political scientist Terri Givens calls for 'radical empathy' – moving beyond an understanding of others' lives and pain to understand the origins of our biases, including internalized oppression. Deftly weaving together her own experiences with the political, she offers practical steps to call out racism and bring about radical social change.

She calls this worldwide awakening “Radical Empathy,” a term in widespread use, which means a deeply rooted sense of connection among people, well beyond merely sympathy and shared feelings. We are one planet, one people, and we will survive together or not at all....

Radical Empathy, or at least one example of it – our complex force of hope even as the world’s leaders continue bleeding away the planet’s resources in order to play war. Radical Empathy transcends war. It’s who we are – when we find ourselves.

Much has been written about empathy as a desirable personal trait, often assumed to arise naturally from human decency. But in my experience, particularly in my work with trauma-affected learners, I have found that radical empathy is not automatic. It is not instinctive, nor is it passive. Instead, it demands deliberate action, moral courage, and a willingness to see and respond to the realities of others without fear or judgment. It is a practice that requires us to decentre ourselves, to become uncomfortable, and to remain emotionally present even when we are uncertain of the outcome.

Empathy in Action: How Radical Empathy Can Revolutionize Classrooms by Le-Anne Goliath

Empathy in Action: How Radical Empathy Can Revolutionize Classrooms by Le-Anne Goliath | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Radical empathy involves actively seeking to comprehend the root causes of individuals' behaviours and emotions and responding with compassion and support. In the educational context, this means recognising the impact of trauma and socio-economic challenges on students and addressing these issues with sensitivity and care. This approach is particularly beneficial in working-class schools, where students often face significant barriers to their educational success.

The theoretical foundations of radical empathy are rooted in several key frameworks. Humanistic psychology, pioneered by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, emphasises the inherent worth of individuals and the importance of empathy in human relationships. Rogers' concept of “unconditional positive regard" closely aligns with radical empathy, as it involves accepting and valuing individuals without judgment (Zhou, 2022). Additionally, Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), developed by Jean Baker Miller and colleagues, underscores the importance of relationships and connection in human development. Radical empathy, as described by Jordan and Schwartz (2018), is grounded in RCT and emphasises mutual empathy and authenticity in relationships. These theoretical underpinnings highlight the importance of empathy in fostering positive educational outcomes.

Understanding why empathy is hard to maintain in clinical practice

Understanding why empathy is hard to maintain in clinical practice | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Empathy is often seen as a natural and essential part of the patient encounter - but reality tends to look quite different. In a new doctoral thesis from Umeå University, doctors describe how not only time pressure, but also the structure of medical education and the culture of the workplace, can make it difficult to live up to the ideal.

In her thesis, Johanna von Knorring interviewed medical students, practicing doctors, and patients about how they experience and understand empathy in healthcare. The results show that empathy is relational and constantly changing - and that it is influenced by far more than an individual doctor's will or personality.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Knows Empathy Isn’t a Sin

‘Project Hail Mary’ Knows Empathy Isn’t a Sin | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

In a rebuke to MAGA Christianity, Ryan Gosling’s deep space spectacular argues that empathy might just save the world.

The article argues that Project Hail Mary is not just a sci-fi survival story — it’s really a defense of empathy. It focuses on Ryland Grace, a reluctant hero trying to save Earth, and especially on his relationship with Rocky, an alien facing the same cosmic crisis. The author says the heart of the film is watching two very different beings slowly learn how to understand each other, not just exchange facts.

The piece uses that friendship to push back against the recent claim in some Christian circles that empathy is dangerous or even sinful. It specifically contrasts the film’s message with Joe Rigney’s argument that empathy can blur moral boundaries. The author’s counterpoint is that empathy is not a threat to truth — it is often the only way to reach truth, because real understanding requires entering another person’s experience rather than staying detached.

How Can Empathy Be Bad?

How Can Empathy Be Bad? | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
When rationality leads to conclusions that are, to use Singer’s word, “strange,” it is better to err on the side of empathy and decency. It is true that empathy alone can lead us to misallocate resources. One needs to reason as well. And we may forget that, by following our social or political biases, we may be empathizing selectively. But rationality alone is still worse. The dream of reason begets monsters.

You love the people around you and desire to support them — but your soul is also drained. It’s common for those of us who are tender-hearted, sensitive, and attuned to others’ needs to struggle with compassion fatigue. Thankfully we can learn to steward the gift of empathy Jesus has given us by setting boundaries and practicing soul care.

Join us for this episode of Soul Talks for part three of a teaching Bill and Kristi shared at the American Association of Christian Counselors. It’s impossible to overflow with empathy for others unless it’s a wellspring in your own soul. You’ll learn when and how to offer empathy and get equipped with practices (like Calming Touch Prayer and Empathy Prayer) so that your care remains healthy and fruitful.

Empathy Is Not a Virtue. - Robert Bortins

Empathy Is Not a Virtue. - Robert Bortins | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Robert Bortins
We have been told a lie so often and so convincingly that most Christians have absorbed it without question: empathy is the highest virtue. To be a good person, a good parent, a good neighbor, you must feel what others feel, affirm what they affirm, and follow wherever their emotions lead.

But what if this version of empathy is not a virtue at all? What if it is, in fact, a sin?

I recently sat down with Dr. Joe Rigney on Refining Rhetoric to discuss his new book, The Sin of Empathy: Compassion and Its Counterfeits (Canon Press, 2025). Joe is a fellow of theology at New Saint Andrews College in Idaho, a pastor at Christ Church, and the author of eight books. He has spent over a decade studying how compassion gets corrupted, and his conclusions should challenge every Christian parent, pastor, and leader who cares about raising children who can think clearly in a morally confused age.

What Is the Double Empathy Problem?

What Is the Double Empathy Problem? | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
A new theory by Dr. Damian Milton (2012) suggests that both the neurodivergent and neurotypical person in a social interaction are involved equally in the “miscommunication” within the interaction — and the “empathy problem [is] a two-way street” (Milton, 2012)

. A double empathy means that in the interaction, both the autistic and neurotypical person are attempting to understand and empathise with the other; however, a disjoint occurs since the way each experiences the world, as well as their personal understandings, is vastly different.

The problem then is not that Autistic people lack the ability to empathise or socialise, but rather that the way in which they do so is not what a neurotypical person is expecting, and vice versa. This theory presents a shift in the way interactions between neurodivergent and neurotypical people are viewed, and the difficulty of social interactions are not to be blamed on the Autistic person’s cognition alone.

Grumbach said speakers like Davis demonstrate that listening is just as important as other types of political activism, including civil disobedience.

"We need to start with care, start with listening to each other, and then from there, we'll know where to point the compass," Grumbach said.

AI Empathy: Can It Really Replace Human Compassion?

AI Empathy: Can It Really Replace Human Compassion? | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

by A. Maya Kaye Ph.D., DSW, LCSW

Empathy can be simulated, but compassion depends on motive and care.

Compassion involves not only sensitivity to suffering but also a motive to alleviate and prevent it.

The difference between feeling understood and being cared for matters more, not less.

Empathy without compassion can be persuasive and effective while still lacking safety.

Why would it matter whether the empathy you receive is real or synthetic?
If it feels emotionally supportive, what is the difference between empathy coming from a human being or a chatbot? Isn’t the experience of empathy what matters?

Why empathy is key to effective leadership | Acuity

Being able to see things from different viewpoints is a leadership quality that speaks more loudly than micromanagement or arrogance: it’s empathy in action. Here’s how you can put empathy at the centre of your decision making.

IN BRIEF
Empathy is a capability that can be developed and nurtured, not an innate trait possessed by only a few.

Acknowledging your own biases and putting them aside to really listen can help defuse a conflict or prevent misunderstandings.

Effective leadership comes from learning to understand people who see things differently to you.

Should we be more skeptical of empathy than the CBC seems to be? - The Hub

Should we be more skeptical of empathy than the CBC seems to be? - The Hub | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

The article argues that empathy is not inherently bad, but it becomes dangerous when it is treated as the main guide for public policy instead of being balanced by reason. The author criticizes the CBC for, in his view, presenting empathy too positively and not taking enough seriously the case made by critics like Gad Saad and Paul Bloom.

Its main claim is that “excessive” or misdirected empathy can push societies toward bad decisions because people focus on emotionally powerful individual stories rather than wider consequences. The piece points to examples like homelessness, immigration, affirmative action, and crime politics as areas where emotional appeals can override careful judgment.

This article, written by Daniel Ross Goodman for the Washington Examiner, argues that the Democratic Party is suffering from what the author calls "Empathy Derangement Syndrome" (EDS).

The piece posits that Democrats have developed a "warped compassion" that leads them to defend hostile regimes and criminals at the expense of American citizens and victims of oppression.

Definition of "Empathy Derangement Syndrome": Derived from evolutionary psychologist Gad Saad’s concept of "suicidal empathy," Goodman defines EDS as a psychological state where empathy is extended to "the predator" (terrorists, hostile regimes, criminal migrants) while hardening against "the prey" (American citizens, victims of terror).

Then, in 2025, Konrath and her colleagues updated their analysis to look at empathy trends through 2018. They were excited to discover that 2007 was actually the low-water point for empathy—levels dipped to their lowest that year but then shot back up. A decade later empathy in young people was higher than it had been at any other time over the previous 39 years.

This new, more positive discovery didn’t get nearly as much media coverage as the one published in 2011, which Konrath found frustrating. “I have to say that I’ve noticed good news is not as popular as bad news,” she says. Recent science supports her assertion: a 2025 study found that negative and alarming articles about children are more likely to go viral than nuanced and balanced stories.
