A significant portion of the discussion around generative AI tools has focused on the challenges related to academic integrity and AI plagiarism. Cheating has dominated the discourse. As a result, many administrators and instructors’ primary focus has been a search for tools that uncover AI-generated writing. For higher education leaders today, the search for reliable […]
We spoke with OER advocate David Wiley about why generative AI is the logical successor to OER, AI's impact on instructional design, exciting AI developments on the horizon, and why it's too early for universities to write policies for generative AI usage.
All AIs are not the same. Each of them has subtle differences in the way they respond to prompts, the way they handle context, and how they format output
"Artificial intelligence has two sets of abilities: Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG).
NLU enables AI to understand human language, while NLG empowers AI to generate meaningful and coherent responses. These two sets of abilities work in tandem to enhance AI’s communication with users."
Today, we're announcing the Claude 3 model family, which sets new industry benchmarks across a wide range of cognitive tasks. The family includes three state-of-the-art models in ascending order of capability: Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Opus.
"the emergence of unified eLearning standards resolves the significant issue with cross-platformin but this doesn’t relieve us of the need to research and compare different formats. Each standard fits specific educational and business needs."
The latest wave of AI tools like ChatGPT seem certain to disrupt the workplace in the years ahead — and the most-disrupted professions may be ones that require college degrees. That presents an unprecedented challenge for colleges already struggling to prove their value.
As artificial intelligence transforms the economy, students need to “future-proof” themselves, educators warn.
Exactly how jobs and professions will change is not yet clear, but universities tasked with producing employable graduates are already thinking about how higher education can stay relevant amid the uncertainty.
“We are in the difficult position of not fully knowing what the concrete outcomes of AI’s impact will be,” says University of Tokyo President Teruo Fujii. “But we are at the same time responsible for educating students to enter a society that will essentially be reinvented by this advanced technology,” he adds.
"AI can streamline operational tasks such as grading, monitoring progress and identifying learning gaps. However, reducing AI to a mere efficiency tool undersells its potential in the learning process."
While AI is a great resource to implement in the classroom, the connection formed between a teacher and student is irreplaceable. I think the genuine bonds formed between them is something that cannot be replaced with technology.

"In today's fast-paced world, attention spans are shrinking, and training needs are evolving. Traditional eLearning courses often feel lengthy and cumbersome, leading to learner disengagement and limited knowledge retention. Enter microlearning."
In recent months, the topic of generative AI has taken over higher education. Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, hundreds of generative AI technologies have come on the scene, available for students to use despite being built outside of an educational context and posing risks for students who rely on them. As these technologies open the door to unlimited possibilities in EdTech, it’s important to use these tools the right way.
