The 2024 State of Instructional Design Survey reveals a window into an industry and profession which is potentially on the brink of disruption and transformation.
The disruption of an industry typically occurs when three conditions align: Democratization of previously specialized skills The emergence of new enabling technologies Growing frustration with status quo tools and processes We've seen this pattern before, e.g. when website builders like Squarespace disrupted web design and when tools like Canva disrupted graphic design.
In each case, frustrations with slow, inefficient and unscalable processes collided with the rise of new technologies which made specialized skills more accessible. The result? Skills were democratised and professionals evolved into consultants, strategists and architects of more complex solutions.

We still prioritize efficient knowledge delivery, a method of learning in which the teacher doles out answers to their student. With modern technology, however, anyone can have their question answered through a quick Google Search. In today’s classrooms, students no longer need knowledge acquisition but creativity and problem-solving skills training. These essential skills set us apart as humans and receive surprisingly little emphasis.

In September 2024, we surveyed over 400 instructional design professionals to gain deeper insights into the trends shaping the field.
Respondents came from a wide range of roles, with the majority being full-time instructional designers (33%), followed closely by subject matter experts (SME) who also design courses as part of their jobs (26%). Directors, Freelancers, Founders, and professionals in other roles, such as Learning & Development Managers, Learning Experience Designers (LXDs), and eLearning Developers, also contributed their perspectives.

"Here we report a randomized, controlled study measuring college students’ learning and their perceptions when content is presented through an AI-powered tutor compared with an active learning class. The AI tutor was developed with the same pedagogical best practices as the lectures. We find that students learn more than twice as much in less time when using an AI tutor, compared with the active learning class. They also feel more engaged and more motivated."

For many teachers, diving into project-based learning (PBL) feels like stepping into the unknown—a space where traditional methods give way to student-driven projects that engage, challenge, and inspire. It’s an exciting yet daunting shift, but this journey can lead to transformative learning experiences with the right tools. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers powerful

Decades before the computer revolution began to spread in earnest, science fiction’s most creative minds sketched out a future most of us never thought we’d see. And yet between self-driving cars and yes, even hoverboards, that future seems closer than ever. Nowhere is this more of a reality than in the field of robotics. Sure, we may not each have our own robotic besties/slaves as the old sci fi shows predicted we’d have by now, but judging by the many creative ways robotics are used in so many classrooms today, well…We’re pretty close. Let’s take a look at some of the neatest and most inspiring ways Robot Education (RoboEd?) is unfolding today

The AI Classroom is already with us. It’s not about robot teachers, or VR headsets: instead, the AI classroom offers technologies that ‘upgrade’ flesh-and-blood teachers and make new educational experiences possible. The AI education market is forecast to grow at an incredible rate this decade, hitting $88.2 billion worldwide by 2030, all driven by technologies that create lesson plans, mark papers and track progress. But perhaps the most exciting application of AI technology in education is in upgrading the way lessons are taught, and the way children learn.

"When MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) burst onto the education scene in the early 2010s, they were hailed as the future of learning. With the promise of democratizing education by providing free access to world-class courses from top universities. Leading universities rushed to put their courses online, venture capital poured in, and platforms like Coursera and edX grew rapidly. Yet today, while MOOCs still exist, they’ve largely retreated to the margins of education. Meanwhile, long-form podcasts have emerged as a surprisingly powerful force in American intellectual life."
