Researchers across Africa, Asia and the Middle East are building their own language models designed for local tongues, cultural nuance and digital independence
"In a high-stakes artificial intelligence race between the United States and China, an equally transformative movement is taking shape elsewhere. From Cape Town to Bangalore, from Cairo to Riyadh, researchers, engineers and public institutions are building homegrown AI systems, models that speak not just in local languages, but with regional insight and cultural depth.
The dominant narrative in AI, particularly since the early 2020s, has focused on a handful of US-based companies like OpenAI with GPT, Google with Gemini, Meta’s LLaMa, Anthropic’s Claude. They vie to build ever larger and more capable models. Earlier in 2025, China’s DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based startup, added a new twist by releasing large language models (LLMs) that rival their American counterparts, with a smaller computational demand. But increasingly, researchers across the Global South are challenging the notion that technological leadership in AI is the exclusive domain of these two superpowers.
Instead, scientists and institutions in countries like India, South Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia are rethinking the very premise of generative AI. Their focus is not on scaling up, but on scaling right, building models that work for local users, in their languages, and within their social and economic realities.
“How do we make sure that the entire planet benefits from AI?” asks Benjamin Rosman, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand and a lead developer of InkubaLM, a generative model trained on five African languages. “I want more and more voices to be in the conversation”.
Beyond English, beyond Silicon Valley
Large language models work by training on massive troves of online text. While the latest versions of GPT, Gemini or LLaMa boast multilingual capabilities, the overwhelming presence of English-language material and Western cultural contexts in these datasets skews their outputs. For speakers of Hindi, Arabic, Swahili, Xhosa and countless other languages, that means AI systems may not only stumble over grammar and syntax, they can also miss the point entirely.
“In Indian languages, large models trained on English data just don’t perform well,” says Janki Nawale, a linguist at AI4Bharat, a lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. “There are cultural nuances, dialectal variations, and even non-standard scripts that make translation and understanding difficult.” Nawale’s team builds supervised datasets and evaluation benchmarks for what specialists call “low resource” languages, those that lack robust digital corpora for machine learning.
It’s not just a question of grammar or vocabulary. “The meaning often lies in the implication,” says Vukosi Marivate, a professor of computer science at the University of Pretoria, in South Africa. “In isiXhosa, the words are one thing but what’s being implied is what really matters.” Marivate co-leads Masakhane NLP, a pan-African collective of AI researchers that recently developed AFROBENCH, a rigorous benchmark for evaluating how well large language models perform on 64 African languages across 15 tasks. The results, published in a preprint in March, revealed major gaps in performance between English and nearly all African languages, especially with open-source models.
Similar concerns arise in the Arabic-speaking world. “If English dominates the training process, the answers will be filtered through a Western lens rather than an Arab one,” says Mekki Habib, a robotics professor at the American University in Cairo. A 2024 preprint from the Tunisian AI firm Clusterlab finds that many multilingual models fail to capture Arabic’s syntactic complexity or cultural frames of reference, particularly in dialect-rich contexts.
Governments step in
For many countries in the Global South, the stakes are geopolitical as well as linguistic. Dependence on Western or Chinese AI infrastructure could mean diminished sovereignty over information, technology, and even national narratives. In response, governments are pouring resources into creating their own models.
Saudi Arabia’s national AI authority, SDAIA, has built ‘ALLaM,’ an Arabic-first model based on Meta’s LLaMa-2, enriched with more than 540 billion Arabic tokens. The United Arab Emirates has backed several initiatives, including ‘Jais,’ an open-source Arabic-English model built by MBZUAI in collaboration with US chipmaker Cerebras Systems and the Abu Dhabi firm Inception. Another UAE-backed project, Noor, focuses on educational and Islamic applications.
In Qatar, researchers at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and the Qatar Computing Research Institute, have developed the Fanar platform and its LLMs Fanar Star and Fanar Prime. Trained on a trillion tokens of Arabic, English, and code, Fanar’s tokenization approach is specifically engineered to reflect Arabic’s rich morphology and syntax.
India has emerged as a major hub for AI localization. In 2024, the government launched BharatGen, a public-private initiative funded with 235 crore (€26 million) initiative aimed at building foundation models attuned to India’s vast linguistic and cultural diversity. The project is led by the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and also involves its sister organizations in Hyderabad, Mandi, Kanpur, Indore, and Madras. The programme’s first product, e-vikrAI, can generate product descriptions and pricing suggestions from images in various Indic languages. Startups like Ola-backed Krutrim and CoRover’s BharatGPT have jumped in, while Google’s Indian lab unveiled MuRIL, a language model trained exclusively on Indian languages. The Indian governments’ AI Mission has received more than180 proposals from local researchers and startups to build national-scale AI infrastructure and large language models, and the Bengaluru-based company, AI Sarvam, has been selected to build India’s first ‘sovereign’ LLM, expected to be fluent in various Indian languages.
In Africa, much of the energy comes from the ground up. Masakhane NLP and Deep Learning Indaba, a pan-African academic movement, have created a decentralized research culture across the continent. One notable offshoot, Johannesburg-based Lelapa AI, launched InkubaLM in September 2024. It’s a ‘small language model’ (SLM) focused on five African languages with broad reach: Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, isiZulu and isiXhosa.
“With only 0.4 billion parameters, it performs comparably to much larger models,” says Rosman. The model’s compact size and efficiency are designed to meet Africa’s infrastructure constraints while serving real-world applications. Another African model is UlizaLlama, a 7-billion parameter model developed by the Kenyan foundation Jacaranda Health, to support new and expectant mothers with AI-driven support in Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Xhosa, and Zulu.
India’s research scene is similarly vibrant. The AI4Bharat laboratory at IIT Madras has just released IndicTrans2, that supports translation across all 22 scheduled Indian languages. Sarvam AI, another startup, released its first LLM last year to support 10 major Indian languages. And KissanAI, co-founded by Pratik Desai, develops generative AI tools to deliver agricultural advice to farmers in their native languages.
The data dilemma
Yet building LLMs for underrepresented languages poses enormous challenges. Chief among them is data scarcity. “Even Hindi datasets are tiny compared to English,” says Tapas Kumar Mishra, a professor at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in eastern India. “So, training models from scratch is unlikely to match English-based models in performance.”
Rosman agrees. “The big-data paradigm doesn’t work for African languages. We simply don’t have the volume.” His team is pioneering alternative approaches like the Esethu Framework, a protocol for ethically collecting speech datasets from native speakers and redistributing revenue back to further development of AI tools for under-resourced languages. The project’s pilot used read speech from isiXhosa speakers, complete with metadata, to build voice-based applications.
In Arab nations, similar work is underway. Clusterlab’s 101 Billion Arabic Words Dataset is the largest of its kind, meticulously extracted and cleaned from the web to support Arabic-first model training.
The cost of staying local
But for all the innovation, practical obstacles remain. “The return on investment is low,” says KissanAI’s Desai. “The market for regional language models is big, but those with purchasing power still work in English.” And while Western tech companies attract the best minds globally, including many Indian and African scientists, researchers at home often face limited funding, patchy computing infrastructure, and unclear legal frameworks around data and privacy.
“There’s still a lack of sustainable funding, a shortage of specialists, and insufficient integration with educational or public systems,” warns Habib, the Cairo-based professor. “All of this has to change.”
A different vision for AI
Despite the hurdles, what’s emerging is a distinct vision for AI in the Global South – one that favours practical impact over prestige, and community ownership over corporate secrecy.
“There’s more emphasis here on solving real problems for real people,” says Nawale of AI4Bharat. Rather than chasing benchmark scores, researchers are aiming for relevance: tools for farmers, students, and small business owners.
And openness matters. “Some companies claim to be open-source, but they only release the model weights, not the data,” Marivate says. “With InkubaLM, we release both. We want others to build on what we’ve done, to do it better.”
In a global contest often measured in teraflops and tokens, these efforts may seem modest. But for the billions who speak the world’s less-resourced languages, they represent a future in which AI doesn’t just speak to them, but with them."

"Revamping enterprise content management with language models

The relatively recent capacity for front-end users to interface with backend systems, documents, and other content via natural language prompts is producing several notable effects on enterprise content management.
Firstly, it reduces the skills needed to engage with such systems, democratizing their use and the advantages organizations derive from them. Natural language interfacing also enables knowledge workers to boost their productivity, accelerate the time required to complete tasks, and increase the throughput of mission-critical workflows.
More importantly, the widespread incorporation of generative language models for ECM use cases engenders the critical byproduct of making enterprise content itself more meaningful—and potentially profitable—to the mission-critical applications that depend on it.
Models such as Open AI’s GPT-4o are influencing everything from metadata extraction to semantic search, summarization, and synthesis of content. Their capabilities are redefining the way these processes work while supporting newfound possibilities that were virtually unthinkable a few short years ago.
Or, as Alex Wong, Senior Product Marketing at Laserfiche, termed it, “It’s really revolutionary from what could previously be done.”
Automated metadata extraction
Prior to the influx of language models and other machine learning techniques, the metadata extraction process was predominantly manual for ECM workflows. For any given application (such as processing invoices), users would have to ingest the metadata based on the documents themselves. Thus, if there were invoices from 100 different vendors, organizations would have to create approximately the same number of templates for obtaining their metadata because “each vendor’s invoice looks different,” Wong commented. “The date may be on the top left and not the top right. The address might be on the bottom right and not the top left. There’s so much variation, like snowflakes.”
However, by relying on language models to read through the content of invoices, contextualize it according to user-defined metadata (stipulated in natural language) and input that metadata into the correct fields, the extraction process is no longer predicated on respective templates.
Instead, it’s based on the metadata itself, regardless of where it appears in the invoices or in any other type of content. Thus, instead of creating 100 templates, organizations now have to make only one.
Pairing OCR with GPT
The marked decrease in effort, time, and templates required to uniformly extract metadata based on natural language specifications is partly attributed to Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This utility extends to Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR), which operates like OCR for handwriting. The approach Wong described is based on organizations scanning their documents into an OCR or ICR engine that transcribes the content, which is then searchable. According to Wong, organizations “just say, in natural language, what metadata you want.”
For purchase orders, organizations might specify the name of the purchaser, to whom the order is shipping, the requested item and line item details, and other particulars. This information, along with the OCR or ICR transcriptions, is sent to the language model, which then extracts the metadata based on the former. “Our enterprise integration with OpenAI takes all that data, puts it together, and gives it back to us in a structured format in the template,” Wong remarked.
There are other downstream benefits of this approach, too. According to Catie Disabato, Senior Communications Manager at Laserfiche, what the model does is “structure it further into the metadata template, which makes it more searchable, but also enables analysis, reporting, and you can do workloads off of it as well.”
Document intelligence
The document analysis capabilities of language models such as GPT-4o are equally viable for informing ECM use cases. In addition to facilitating natural language search, such models are adept at reading through the content of documents to perform a multiplicity of functions, such as “summarizations, answer questions, give insights, and synthesize between documents,” Wong indicated. Users can also compare the information between documents to understand points of distinction and similarity. These features are invaluable for expanding the search idiom to include capabilities that would previously necessitate substantial human effort and were difficult to scale.
For example, “If you’re looking at a folder of invoices, you can ask which ones are due on the first, and it will help you find what you’re looking for,” Wong mentioned. Moreover, users can prompt models to perform these tasks in natural language, making these capabilities accessible to those who might not otherwise be adept at writing code for traditional queries. Once users stipulate in natural language what information they’re looking for, “Laserfiche is taking the text and processing it in a way that is easy for the AI to understand, and it will get sent to OpenAI to complete the task,” Wong noted.
Positive feedback
The ability for users to interface with AI models and backend content management systems via natural language creates a pair of palatable outcomes. It lowers the technological barriers required to interface with these resources and expands what can be done with the underlying content. Organizations can achieve more with their enterprise content, which is arguably the point of storing, processing, and acting on it."

Over the past 15 years, I have been involved in driving digital transformation across Southeast Asia from e-commerce platforms to consumer health initiatives and precision instruments. I have sat in big conference rooms with global executives and key opinion leaders debating strategy, and I have also been on the ground with local teams trying to get systems working amid real-world challenges.
One thing is clear: Southeast Asia does not just need more engineers or shiny technology to make its AI revolution happen. What it really needs are more translators.
Not language translators (though language does matter in this diverse region), but people who can bridge the often wide gap between AI’s technical promise and the messy realities of local businesses. People who translate ideas into action, global tech into local impact, and strategy into execution. This “translation layer” is invisible until you realize how much gets lost without it.
AI adoption: Just another chapter in a familiar story
Many companies here are still getting their feet wet with AI. It’s exciting, but it’s also very much an experiment-and-learn process. Just like when companies first adopted ERP systems, CRM tools, or eCommerce platforms years ago, AI rollout comes with trial, error, and adaptation.
I once worked with a regional team rolling out an eCommerce platform across five APAC countries. The tech was solid, the budget was good, but adoption varied wildly. In some countries, users embraced the platform. In others, it barely made a dent.
The difference was not the technology. It was whether local digital champions existed to translate business needs into tech realities and back again. In successful markets, those “bridge builders” made the strategy real. In others, it stayed trapped in PowerPoint decks.
Similarly, AI is no silver bullet. I recently experienced this first-hand with an AI chatbot project designed for after-sales support. The model was trained on clean, Western HQ data. But in the field, customers used WhatsApp, switched between three languages in a single chat, and expected empathy rather than robotic efficiency. Without someone to bridge that cultural and operational gap, the bot simply did not work.
Why translators are essential in Southeast Asia
SEA’s diversity is both its biggest strength and challenge. What works in Singapore might not necessarily fly in Indonesia or Vietnam. Different languages, regulatory environments, infrastructure gaps, and cultural expectations mean one-size-fits-all AI won’t cut it.
Moreover, many companies here operate with legacy systems and business models built on relationships, not just processes. These ecosystems demand patient, thoughtful integration of AI guided by translators who understand local context deeply.
These translators are not a specific job title, they might be product owners, digital leads, operations managers, or even head of sales. But they share the ability to:
Understand business priorities and technical constraints;
Speak the languages of frontline teams and data scientists alike;
Recognize when global solutions need local adaptation;
Drive change through collaboration, not just mandates.
Growing translators: A new kind of talent
The good news? Translators can be nurtured, but not through traditional, siloed career paths. We need more hybrid talent people who can move fluidly between stakeholder conversations, user stories, and ROI discussions all in a day’s work...

Apple is introducing Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls.
“Live translation can translate conversation on the fly,” Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s director of input experience, said Monday during the WWDC 2025 event. The translation feature is “enabled by Apple Built models that run entirely on your device so your personal conversations stay personal.”
In Messages, Live Translation will automatically translate text for you as you type and deliver it in your preferred language. Similarly, when the person you’re texting responds, each text can be instantly translated.
When catching up on FaceTime, Apple’s translation feature will provide live captions. And on a phone call — whether you’re talking to an Apple user or not — your words can be translated as you talk, and the translation is spoken out loud for the call recipient. As the person you’re speaking to responds in their own language, you’ll hear a spoken translation of their voice.
“For developers, it’s easy to enable live translation for calls within your communication apps with a new API,” Ikemoto said.

Cognitive diversity can lead to better performance from investment teams, a new survey from the London Business School suggests.
The study by professor of finance Alex Edmans, commissioned by the Diversity Project, found that cognitive diversity must be effectively managed to lead to better investment performance. Firms cannot simply ‘add diversity then stir’ to achieve superior results.
Cognitive diversity is the range of perspectives, skill sets, experiences and ways of thinking within a team, and how that influences the quality of decision-making. It can arise from differences in educational background, professional background, life background, cognitive style, personality and demographics.
The study combines a review of academic literature with first-hand insights from investment professionals, revealing strong consistency between the two and high conviction across ‘virtually all’ practitioners that “cognitive diversity has the potential to create substantial value in asset management.”

The research found cognitive diversity can create clear competitive advantages for investment teams. Cognitive diversity leads to a greater range of perspectives, mitigates the risk of groupthink and helps investors to identify factors not priced in by the market. It said the most valuable sources of diversity are different skills sets and professional backgrounds.
However, diverse teams may also experience slower decision-making, as integrating conflicting viewpoints may lead to dilution or paralysis. Sophisticated leadership is essential to harness the benefits and minimise the costs from diverse thinking.
The research suggested six ways the investment industry can make diversity part of a core business strategy:
Optimise hybrid working. The report’s conclusions imply challenges for hybrid working, for example, the preference for ‘small, nimble meetings’. It is also clear from the study that certain tasks do not require cognitive diversity and may be best achieved by one person working from home. The industry has some way to go to optimise working practices.
Broaden recruitment and keep a close eye on promotions. Firms must cast a wide net – not just in who they hire, but in how they hire and then how they develop people from different backgrounds. While there have been promising initiatives, the industry still struggles to bring in talent from ‘non-traditional’ paths, and even when they enter, few make it to the top.
Organise diversity and inclusion efforts around problem-solving. Framing diversity as a key driver of innovation and better decisions — rather than a box-ticking exercise — helps shift the conversation to business strategy and outcomes.
Assess the quality of decision-making. There is an opportunity for the industry to assess the drivers behind good and bad investment calls and embed those learnings into business practices.
Reframe the debate. A recent global C-suite Diversity Project webinar suggested that leaders from around the world see genuine diversity and inclusion as key to building the best teams. This research resets a fractious debate, providing nuanced analysis of the benefits (and – if not properly implemented – the costs) of diversity.
Baroness Helena Morrissey, chair of the Diversity Project, said: “The Diversity Project commissioned this work to reassess the ‘business case’ for diversity. We made it clear at the outset that we wanted to see what the evidence showed, not work backwards from any conclusion we hoped to see. The conclusions are both intuitive and compelling: diversity must be developed thoughtfully and managed well to harness its powerful benefits.
“As the report highlights, great investment involves pursuing outlier ideas, so firms must create the right teams working in the right conditions for those ideas to surface. I hope this research will unify those on opposite sides of the DEI debate so we can all focus on delivering the best client outcomes.”
Edmans added: “Before conducting this research, I thought that cognitive diversity was unambiguously beneficial – surely, diverse viewpoints lead to better decisions. But the scientific evidence and practitioner insights highlighted that it’s more complex. While cognitive diversity can indeed generate substantial benefits, it is also difficult to manage and must be supported by psychological safety and a culture of inclusion.
“These challenges only heighten its importance: since it is tricky to get right, any organisation that succeeds will enjoy a significant competitive advantage. I hope this report helps firms do exactly that – in asset management and beyond.”

"The Griffin Poetry Prize announced its 2025 international winner as part of the Griffin Poetry Prize Readings event in Toronto on June 4.
The winner of the C$130,000 international prize is Karen Leeder for Psyche Running: Selected Poems, 2005–2022, for her translation of the work of Durs Grünbein from the German, published by Seagull Books. The collection brings together more than 100 of Grünbein’s poems.
Leeder is a U.K. writer, translator, and scholar of German culture at the University of Oxford. Berlin-based Grünbein, also a translator and a professor of poetics and aesthetics at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, is the author of more than 25 books of poetry and essays. The translation by Michael Hoffmann of his poetry collection Ashes for Breakfast: Selected Poems, had been a finalist for the International Griffin Poetry Prize in 2006.
The judges, Canadian poet and novelist Anne Michaels, Northern Irish poet and novelist Nick Laird, and Polish poet, translator, and essayist Tomasz Różycki said in their citation that, “Durs Grünbein’s Psyche Running is a brilliant overview and selection of a poet who satisfies our hunger to be serious, as again and again he finds himself “between words and things.” Karen Leeder’s adept translations establish a new version of Grünbein in English: universal, lyrical, philosophical.”

Ngũgĩ’s understanding of incompleteness and conviviality is ... evident in his willingness to have his novels translated into English and other colonial languages, despite his renowned advocacy for African language publishing and his initial publication of later works in Gikuyu. He personally translated his Gikuyu works, such as Caitaani Mutharabaini and Murogi wa Kagogo into English (Devil on the Cross and Wizard of the Crow), and Matigari was translated from Gikuyu by Wangui wa Goro. Henry Chakava also played a role in facilitating the translation of major titles from the Heinemann African Writers Series into Kiswahili, and some from Kiswahili into English, thus expanding accessibility. This approach suggests that Ngũgĩ’s “decolonisation of the mind” leaned less towards radical rupture and more towards conviviality and repair. By embracing translation, Ngũgĩ acknowledged the “incompleteness” of any single linguistic sphere, recognising that his message of decolonisation could achieve greater “potency” by reaching diverse audiences through multiple languages. This act of translation serves as a quintessential example of conviviality: a “reaching out” and an “encounter” that fosters dialogue and engagement across linguistic and cultural boundaries rather than promoting coercive conversion. It demonstrates a rejection of rigid dualisms and an openness to various forms of being, adaptable to context and necessity.
Ngũgĩ’s strategy was not to isolate African languages or create an insular literary tradition; instead, it aimed to assert their centrality while actively participating in the interconnected global landscape. This nuanced position emphasises a vision of decolonisation that seeks to rebalance power and cultivate mutual respect, rather than simply reversing historical exclusions. It advocates for a more equitable and convivial global literary space, where African voices can “move the centre” of world literature by enriching the global literary landscape through their unique contributions and active engagement, rather than by severing existing ties. This was deeply rooted in his character, as James Ogude remarked: “As a person, Ngugi was profoundly warm and down-to-earth, and always carried himself around with a deep sense of humility and ease, not to mention his infectious laughter and humour. He was simply ordinary – a man of the people”. As I’ve argued, incompleteness isn’t a weakness; it’s a powerful source of learning, growth, connection, and humility.

L’étude du processus créatif des écrivaines francophones plurilingues aux XXe et XXIe siècles
Traditionnellement, on pense qu’un auteur écrit dans une langue de son pays à destination d’un lectorat monolingue. Si la majorité des œuvres publiées confirment cette vision, l’étude des brouillons montre souvent le processus d’écriture beaucoup plus complexe où plusieurs langues maîtrisées par un écrivain participent à différents stades d’élaboration d’une œuvre. Ainsi, certains écrivains formulent les plans dans une langue et rédigent un texte dans une autre. D’autres font des commentaires métadiscursifs dans une langue pour annoter et modifier un texte écrit dans une autre. Quelques-uns vont échanger sur des questions de langue et de terminologie dans leur correspondance et décrire leur propre activité de traduction. Enfin, très nombreux sont ceux qui transposent leur œuvre dans une autre langue, l’autotraduction permettant de continuer son processus créatif, d’améliorer le texte initial, de l’adapter à un autre public, parfois après avoir pris connaissance de la critique littéraire. Ces stratégies déployées par les écrivains sont nombreuses et leur connaissance et leur compréhension ne sont possibles que grâce à l’étude des avant-textes de l’œuvre.
Dans ce colloque international, nous étudierons exclusivement les corpus des autrices qui, généralement, sont moins mis en valeur dans les recherches universitaires. L’ambition de cette rencontre sera de mettre en lumière le processus créatif – en français – chez les écrivaines plurilingues aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Si la période étudiée et le genre des corpus étudiés sont bien circonscrits, toutes les modalités créatives seront explorées : l’écriture en plusieurs langues ou dans une langue non maternelle, l’autotraduction, la traduction collaborative voire la traduction. En effet, toutes ces activités sont fortement imbriquées et doivent être appréhendées dans une vision globale.
Comme un grand nombre d’écrivaines plurilingues exercent une importante activité de traduction de /vers le français et que la traduction leur sert souvent d'espace d'écriture expérimentale, les études sur l’interaction écriture/(auto)tradution seront au centre des questionnements de cet événement. En outre, puisque le plurilinguisme des écrivaines est souvent caché ou occulté, une attention particulière sera portée à l’étude des documents d’archives (brouillons des œuvres ou de traduction, correspondance, bibliothèque personnelle, etc.). D’autres problématiques essentielles comme les humanités numériques (par le biais des bases de données numériques disponibles) seront également convoquées. Lorsque les manuscrits n’ont pas été conservés, d’autres méthodes d’analyse pourraient permettre d’étudier les transformations et les interactions entre le texte initial et le texte second en révélant, par exemple, le degré de créativité des textes autotraduits.
La conférence se penchera principalement sur les questions suivantes :
Quelles stratégies créatives déploient les autrices qui écrivent et (s’auto)traduisent en plusieurs langues ou dans une langue adoptée ?
Comment le plurilinguisme caché ou occulté des écrivaines se manifeste-t-il dans une œuvre publiée et/ou dans les avant-textes ?
De quelle manière l'activité d'(auto-)traduction des écrivaines plurilingues a-t-elle contribué à stimuler et à fertiliser leur écriture ?
Comment les écrivaines-traductrices décrivent-elles leur activité de traduction ?
Comment les autrices coopèrent-elles avec d'autres traducteurs/traductrices pour transposer leurs œuvres en d’autres langues ?
Comment les écrivaines/traductrices rejettent-elles les normes de leur culture d'origine (en particulier les normes du monolinguisme) ?
Comment les écrivaines/traductrices innovent-elles pour transmettre d’autres valeurs culturelles ?
Quelles sont les modalités du processus d'écriture lorsque les écrivaines plurilingues traduisent les œuvres d'autres personnes ou leurs propres œuvres ?
Dans un souci de diversité linguistique et de développement de la francophonie scientifique, le colloque se tiendra intégralement en langue française.

"Le juge Galiatsatos, de la Cour du Québec, a été désavoué par la Cour d'appel dans le dossier de la traduction obligatoire de certains jugements en cour criminelle.
Le juge Dennis Galiatsatos n'avait pas la compétence pour déclarer « inopérant » l'article 10 de la Charte de la langue française (aussi appelée « loi 101 ») en ce qui a trait à la traduction obligatoire de certains jugements de l'anglais vers le français, conclut la Cour d'appel du Québec.
Le tribunal a rendu sa décision sur le banc mardi dernier. Le jugement écrit n'a pas encore été publié, mais Radio-Canada, qui n'était pas présente à l'audience, a pu prendre connaissance des conclusions de la Cour grâce aux bandes audio conservées au greffe de Montréal.
Les magistrats qui ont entendu l'appel du Procureur général du Québec – Yves-Marie Morissette, Patrick Healy et Lori Renée Weitzman – ont accueilli l'argument central de la requête, selon lequel le juge Galiatsatos, de la Cour du Québec, n'avait pas la compétence pour prononcer le jugement qu'il a prononcé.

Les motifs de leur décision seront abondants, si bien que la version écrite de leur jugement ne sera pas produite avant plusieurs semaines, ont-ils ajouté.
L'affaire a été tranchée au terme d'une audience qui n'aura duré que quelques heures, les parties impliquées ayant été invitées l'été dernier à fournir leurs arguments par écrit à la Cour d'appel.
Cette affaire concerne le nouvel article 10 de la Charte de la langue française qui, depuis le 1er juin 2024, exige qu’une version française [soit] jointe immédiatement et sans délai à tout jugement rendu par écrit en anglais par un tribunal judiciaire lorsqu’il met fin à une instance ou présente un intérêt pour le public.
Deux semaines avant son entrée en vigueur, le 17 mai, le juge Galiatsatos avait, dans le cadre d’une affaire pour conduite avec les facultés affaiblies et pour négligence ayant causé la mort, déterminé que cette mesure était « inopérante » en droit criminel.
Le magistrat avait notamment justifié sa décision par le fait que les délais de traduction inhérents au respect de cette nouvelle disposition auraient pu donner des arguments à l'accusée, Christine Pryde, pour obtenir un arrêt des procédures en vertu de l'arrêt Jordan de la Cour suprême.
Il avait aussi souligné que le droit criminel est de compétence fédérale.
Le Procureur général du Québec avait aussitôt porté cette décision en appel. Sa demande de sursis avait été rejetée, mais l'affaire devait toujours être tranchée sur le fond.
Mise en œuvre compliquée
L'application de l'article 10 de la Charte de la langue française, qui s'est malgré tout amorcée comme prévu le 1er juin 2024, avance cahin-caha depuis lors.
Malgré le fait que cette mesure ait été adoptée deux ans plus tôt, le milieu juridique avait semblé pris de court au moment de son entrée en vigueur, si bien que les premières traductions s’étaient fait attendre. Et des irrégularités – pour reprendre l'expression du ministre Jolin-Barrette – persistent encore aujourd'hui.
Des recherches effectuées par Radio-Canada, dont les résultats ont été diffusés la semaine dernière, ont permis de recenser une cinquantaine de jugements écrits de fin d'instance qui, au cours de la dernière année, ont été rendus en anglais d'abord, sans traduction française.
Aucun des magistrats à l'origine de ces décisions n'a cité le juge Galiatsatos. Le Parti québécois (PQ), cela étant, s'est permis une mise en garde le jour de la publication de nos recherches, invitant la magistrature à ne pas tomber dans le « militantisme judiciaire ».
La Loi sur la langue officielle et commune, le français (aussi connue sous l'appellation « loi 96 »), qui a modifié la loi 101 en 2022, fait l'objet d'au moins cinq contestations judiciaires, et d'aucuns s'attendent à ce que l'affaire remonte jusqu'en Cour suprême.
La loi 96 est notamment contestée par des commissions scolaires anglophones et par des groupes de juristes, dont un représenté par l’avocat bien connu Julius Grey.
Joint par Radio-Canada, le cabinet du procureur général du Québec et ministre de la Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, s'est réjoui d'avoir remporté une victoire importante en Cour d'appel, limitant ses commentaires en raison du fait que la disposition contestée fait toujours l’objet de recours devant les tribunaux.
Soyez assurés que nous continuerons de défendre fermement notre position, a-t-il néanmoins ajouté, plaidant que la justice [doit] être accessible en français au Québec.
À l'inverse, le jugement rendu par la Cour d'appel la semaine dernière constitue en quelque sorte une rebuffade pour le juge Galiatsatos, qui avait récidivé dans une autre cause, en décembre dernier.
Suivant la décision que j’ai rendue [le 17 mai 2024], les présents motifs sont rédigés en anglais seulement, étant donné qu’il s’agit de la langue du procès, avait-il écrit en bas de page, spécifiant que la traduction en français [serait] ordonnée dès que le jugement [serait] versé au dossier de la Cour.
Le magistrat avait en outre indiqué qu'il s'agissait de la pratique adoptée par la plupart des juges de la chambre criminelle de la Cour supérieure du Québec, dans le district de Montréal, une observation que les tribunaux n'ont pas voulu commenter et que Radio-Canada n'a pas réussi à valider.

Three young Egyptians turn their love for Korean culture into careers in translation, cuisine, and digital influence.
"Korean studies were formally introduced in Egypt in 2005, with the launch of the first Korean Language Department in the Arab world at the Faculty of Al-Alsun at Ain Shams University. This initiative, supported by the Korean Embassy, the Korea Foundation, and KOICA, was meant to boost cultural exchange. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1995, cooperation between Egypt and South Korea has grown steadily.
While studying abroad, El-Bayar worked as an interpreter, facilitating Arabic-Korean translations during high-level business meetings, including a major deal attended by Egypt’s transport minister and a senior executive from South Korea’s Dyson company.
“Translation isn’t just about words. It’s about conveying emotion and culture,” he says. “AI will change many aspects of translation, especially in technical fields. But literary translation will always need the human touch.”
From curiosity to culinary craft
In the bustling alleys of old Cairo, where the scent of spices lingers in the air, Thoraya Gamal grew up immersed in the rhythms of family and food. From an early age, she was captivated by the kitchen, watching her mother and sisters cook traditional Egyptian dishes, learning each step like lines from a well-loved book.
But her curiosity extended beyond coriander and cumin. Through Korean dramas and music, which were slowly making their way into Egyptian TV and the internet, Gamal discovered a new culinary world, one that stirred her imagination as much as her appetite. “What began as curiosity,” she says, “turned into a deep love and desire to experience a culture through its food.”
Driven by this passion, Gamal set out to master Korean cuisine, aiming not just to cook but also to connect cultures. Her journey led to the opening of her own Korean restaurant in Cairo, where traditional dishes like kimbap, bibimbap, tteokbokki, and jjajangmyeon are served alongside screenings of Korean dramas. Guests can lounge in Korean-style settings and even try on hanbok, a traditional Korean dress, making the experience immersive from plate to ambiance...
Her rise mirrors the growing popularity of Korean pop culture in Egypt. Since the early 2010s, the spread of K-dramas and K-pop, has been boosted by streaming platforms and social media. What initially started as a niche interest among a few fans quickly evolved into a widespread cultural phenomenon, particularly among youth and university students, thanks to their high production value, emotional storytelling, and a strong online fan presence. Today, Korean content is widely consumed in Egypt through platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and dedicated fan communities on social media.
“I wanted to bring a piece of Korea to the heart of Cairo,” says Thoraya. “It’s more than food. It’s about sharing a culture I love, creating a space where people can feel transported.”... "

"Right now, if the Japanese police are formally questioning a person who doesn’t speak Japanese, they’re required to provide an interpreter, who will provide in-person translations at the police station where the suspect is being questioned. That’s going to change, though, and it’s going to change very soon, due to a revision of the National Police Agency’s Criminal Investigation Protocols.
According to the agency’s statistics, 12,170 foreigners were arrested in Japan in 2024, the second consecutive annual increase and the largest amount in 15 years. In addition, there were over 9,500 other crimes determined to have been committed by foreigners with non-arrest outcomes, the agency says. With the need for interpreters increasing, an in-person interpreter will no longer be guaranteed, and instead foreigners who are being questioned may be assigned an off-site interpreter who interprets over the phone or via a voice chat device.
Japan currently has around 4,200 police officers and personnel who are proficient in a foreign (i.e. non-Japanese) language, supported by a network of roughly 9,600 civilian interpreters who can be called in if their services are needed. That might seem like a sufficiently large talent pool, but those are the numbers of potential interpreters nationwide, and for all languages. As Japan’s resident foreign national and inbound international traveler demographics diversify, both in country of origin and where they’re living/traveling in Japan, the National Police Agency says investigators aren’t always able to locate a nearby translator who not only speaks the specific native language of the suspect, but who’s also available to come to the station on short notice. Under the new system, when an interpreter is not available, the suspect will be brought to the nearest police station for questioning, with an interpreter working remotely.
For the police, the new system will allow for quicker questionings, which in turn could help in investigations of ongoing crimes or searches for at-large accomplices. From the perspective of the foreigner being questioned, though, this is a disadvantageous policy shift. Speaking over the phone adds an extra degree of difficulty to communication, increasing the possibility of linguistic mistranslation or psychological misinterpretation. It also makes it more difficult for interpreters to reference documents, photos, or other physical items that the police might be presenting to the foreign suspect as part of the questioning, which could be especially dangerous if the suspect is being asked to sign forms that they’re unable to read by the officers in the room...

TEHRAN – The 12th edition of the Persian translation of Dutch-American writer Meindert DeJong’s 1954 novel “The Wheel on the School” has recently been published.
"Iran’s Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults – Kanoon in Tehran is the publisher of the book translated by Bahereh Anvar. The publisher released the first edition in 1974.
“The Wheel on the School” is a beloved children's novel, which received the Newbery Medal in 1955 and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1957. The book was beautifully illustrated by Maurice Sendak, renowned for his distinctive artistic style. In his book “The Promise of Happiness: Value and Meaning in Children's Fiction”, Fred Inglis notes that DeJong’s story evokes the old-world values and pieties, making them “imaginable in the new,” thereby bridging tradition and modernity.
Set in the small fishing village of Shora in Friesland, the story follows six schoolchildren—Lina, Jella, Auka, Eelka, and the inseparable twins Pier and Dirk—as they embark on a quest to bring storks back to their village. When Lina writes an essay questioning why storks are absent, their teacher encourages them to find out for themselves.
The children discover that the steeply pitched roofs of their homes prevent the storks from nesting, and they decide to place wagon wheels on the rooftops to give the birds a nesting space. Their search for wheels proves challenging due to the village’s tiny size, and along the way, they encounter various interesting local characters, including their teachers, fishermen’s families, and villagers.
The narrative emphasizes the power of curiosity, wonder, and perseverance, illustrating that through thinking and questioning, dreams can be realized. The story highlights themes of community effort, ingenuity, and hope.
The children are supported by figures like Grandmother Sibble III, legless Janus, old Douwa, and the ‘tin man,’ enriching the tale with a sense of warmth and tradition. The novel’s dedication reads: "To my nieces, Shirley and Beverly, and their flying fingers," reflecting DeJong’s affection and inspiration from his family.
“The Wheel on the School” is a simple yet profound story that celebrates youthful curiosity and the collective pursuit of a shared dream, making it a timeless classic in children’s literature.
Meindert DeJong (1906–1991) was a Dutch-born American children's author who received the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1962, the first American to do so. Born in Wierum, Friesland, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1914 and studied in Michigan and Chicago.
DeJong began writing children's books during the Great Depression, with his first published work in 1938. His notable titles include “The Wheel on the School” and “The House of Sixty Fathers”. Many of his books, including six illustrated by Maurice Sendak, received numerous awards and recognitions, cementing his legacy as a significant contributor to children's literature.

"YouTube is adding a new tool to let creators change thumbnails for videos in different languages.
It's part of a push by YouTube to help videos travel globally.
AI-powered dubbing is a top priority among YouTube stars like MrBeast.
YouTube is releasing a new feature to help creators spread their content around the world.
The tool, which will be rolling out in the next few days, lets creators upload different thumbnails for each video that's dubbed into a different language, a company spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. The aim is to help influencers localize their thumbnails based on a viewer's language.
The feature is available to a subset of creators who have access to YouTube's dubbing technology.

"We're always testing more ways for creators to reach new audiences. In this case, a handful of creators are able to localize their thumbnails for videos with multiple language audio tracks," the YouTube spokesperson said.
Several of YouTube's top stars, including MrBeast, are bullish on using AI to dub videos so they can reach global audiences. YouTube began testing multi-language audio dubbing with some creators as early as 2023.
This thumbnail feature opens up an additional opportunity for creators to make their videos feel more native to a viewer's location, said Nate Stone, cofounder at the AI dubbing platform DittoDub.
DittoDub is offering a tool that uses AI to detect the text in a creator's thumbnail in order to change its language for each dubbed video. Creators with access to YouTube's new multi-language thumbnail feature can then upload those custom thumbnails to their YouTube accounts.
DittoDub said its translation tools are reviewed by humans to ensure a high level of confidence that it's preserving the meaning in any translated audio or visuals. They want to capture the creator's original tone, no matter the language.
"The emotion that we always strive for is not to recreate something different, but instead to preserve all of the original intentions of the creator," Stone said."

Many Bermudians are well travelled and many people from all over the world come here to support our economy as tourists or working here. If you ever went to a country where the majority does not speak your language, you know how challenging it can be.
When that happens, people have to find different ways to understand. When I came as an exchange student from Germany to Knoxville, I had a lot to learn. My school English was just that and it helped that people around me had patience and understanding and were willing to help me find my way.
I was able to enjoy and grow in learning to communicate with others. In fact, new friendships developed. Sometimes a smile was enough to create a feeling of understanding.
Love is what reveals who we are, what we stand for and hope for, a mindset of wishing well and wanting the wellbeing of all fellow people.
What if all language barriers were gone?
Tomorrow is Pentecost, 50 days after Easter. Christ’s death and resurrection happened on the Jewish Pass Over festival that actually lasts seven weeks (49 days) and then the next day is Pentecost (Pentecost means the 50th day) when the time of unleavened bread was over and the people in Israel were baking regular bread again, a reason to celebrate.
The apostles were together that day, when an unusual phenomenon occurred (Acts 2:2-6; NRSV): “And suddenly from Heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every people under Heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.
Looking beyond the metaphoric language (note the words “like” and “as of”) we can say that even though they all came from different places and spoke different languages, there was a spirit of understanding among them that day.
Can you imagine how strange and at the same time wonderful that must have been? People felt understood by strangers. I think it takes a lot of positive energy to get to that point. They opened their hearts to feel touched by hope and understanding and deep acceptance.
Understanding is more than speaking the same languages
Understanding requires hope, goodwill, smiling, and friendliness. Then something can begin to grow and get better. Of course some were still negative and sneered saying the apostles were probably just drunk. The majority though felt a new way of being, feeling, and acting, which allows for something beyond words.
There was a new spirit and that spirit spread rapidly. Peter stood up and held a short sermon to the crowd, and verse 41 says (NIV): “Those who accepted his message were baptised, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”
It was the beginning of what we call the Church. From then on the church grew daily. Thus on Pentecost we celebrate the birthday of the church. There should be a birthday cake.
The Tower of Bable
In the Old Testament there is a lovely story that wants to explain why there are different languages in the world even though all people after the big flood came from the family of Noah. It was an attempt to explain something people experienced (foreign languages) and it was done in a way that even unschooled peasants thousands of years ago could understand.
According to that story in Genesis (11:1-9), the people who were born after the flood did not want to fulfil God’s commandment from Genesis 9:1b: “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the Earth.”
They did not want to “fill the Earth”, but wanted to stay together as one people. They also were tired of moving around as nomads. They became inventive, building a city with brick and mortar, and a tower, which was supposed to reach the heavens, so they could see it from all places and find their way home.
While they thought they were making good progress with the tower, the story tells us God had to come down first to even see it (oriental stories love playing with images like that).
Then, in Genesis 11:6 (NIV) God makes a very interesting statement: “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” After that he confused their language, and people got frustrated with each other and one family after the other left the place which was later called Babel, as they could no longer understand what the others were “babbling”.
“As one people speaking the same language … nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them” means in turn that Christians who live in the Spirit of Pentecost can achieve everything they plan together. There are examples of that, right here in Bermuda.
I think of Christians like Philip Rego who started an orphanage in Haiti 15 years ago, and besides all difficulties with gang wars lately, the “Feed My Lambs” ministry grew the orphanage to be a home for 63 children. Meanwhile, in addition a school was founded for 700 students, a medical centre for the community, and a filtration system provides purified water to the community. Many churches and individuals from Bermuda support this ministry with money, supplies and volunteering.
Bermuda has so many churches and ministries helping seniors, youth, families, women and the homeless. There are food programmes, clothing services, shelters and so much more.
People who get involved in helping others often find new meaning in it. Their work is done in the Spirit of Pentecost, inspired to bring good news to the people, not only with words but also with deeds of love and understanding.
Those positive examples of finding common ground make me think. Those stories about languages in Babel and at Pentecost are symbols or metaphors for understanding each other. It stands for the willingness or lack of it to approach each other with the goal to understand.
Love and friendliness are the key to understanding
Language is just the vehicle towards understanding. Love and friendliness are the true communicators. It is about a climate of understanding without blame or shame.
Where there is understanding and love and friendliness, the church will grow because Christian love can overcome differences. People all over the world feel united in their faith as Christians, even if they speak different languages.
Today we have so many chances to overcome language barriers, from translator apps on the smart phone to interpreters. The Bible is translated into hundreds of languages and dialects to help all people to hear and understand the Good News of the risen Christ just like those foreigners in Jerusalem, who were “Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs.”(Acts 2:9-11 NIV)
Here is a little challenge: read those names aloud and you may get a feeling how tongue-twisting some other languages might be.

Ce samedi, le Serment pour la Justice a présenté un rapport qui expose les problèmes du système judiciaire concernant le bon déroulement des audiences en raison de problèmes de qualité et de ponctualité de la traduction.
Quelle situation révèlent les résultats du suivi de l’Institut de justice du Kosovo ?

Le manque de traduction précise affecte les retards dans les affaires, affirment les acteurs du système judiciaire
L'Institut de droit du Kosovo a publié le 4 juin 2025 le rapport « Efficacité judiciaire dans la pratique et droits linguistiques dans le système judiciaire ». Ce rapport met en lumière les problèmes auxquels sont confrontés les tribunaux en raison du nombre limité de traducteurs et de la qualité des traductions.
L'avocat Yll Zekaj affirme que la question de la traduction est cruciale pour garantir un procès équitable dans le système judiciaire.
« Il est impossible de garantir un procès équitable et d'assurer l'efficacité du système judiciaire si nous rencontrons encore des problèmes de traduction et si les parties ne comprennent toujours pas la procédure dans leur propre langue. Or, la langue officielle du Kosovo doit être respectée par toutes les institutions, qu'elles soient judiciaires ou administratives », a-t-il déclaré.
Selon l'avocat Zekaj, sur le plan législatif, le Kosovo est complet.
« Nous avons la Constitution qui définit les langues officielles, puis la Loi sur l'usage des langues. En pratique, nous sommes encore en difficulté. Il arrive encore que, faute de traduction, les audiences soient reportées parce que les dossiers ne sont pas fournis dans une langue compréhensible. Cela aura certainement des conséquences sur le retard de la procédure et le report de l'audience », a-t-il ajouté.
L'avocat Negovan Sharanovic a déclaré qu'une mauvaise traduction ne peut pas affecter le déroulement d'un procès équitable, mais ne peut que retarder inutilement la procédure jusqu'à ce que les irrégularités dans la traduction soient corrigées.
« Comme je l'ai dit dans ma réponse précédente, je pense qu'une mauvaise traduction n'affecte pas l'équité de la décision du tribunal. Concernant les procédures civiles, aucune plainte n'a été déposée concernant la traduction, mais dans le cadre de procédures pénales, j'ai eu des cas où, lors de la rédaction de l'acte d'accusation et des preuves qui y étaient jointes, les preuves n'avaient pas été traduites », a-t-il déclaré.
Sharanović a souligné que cela affecte directement le retard inutile de la procédure, mais aussi le non-respect du droit d'utiliser la langue maternelle de l'accusé ou des autres participants à la procédure pénale.
Par ailleurs, Arrita Rezniqi, chercheuse principale à l'IKL, a déclaré que lors du suivi, il a été constaté que le manque de dossiers, y compris le manque de traductions, a conduit la défense à demander le report des audiences prévues au tribunal.
« D'autre part, des déclarations ont également été recueillies auprès des parties concernées, qu'il s'agisse d'avocats ou de procureurs, selon lesquelles la traduction des documents de l'affaire, bien que terminologiquement exacte, ne fournit pas toujours des informations claires et appropriées en termes d'interprétation linguistique. À cet égard, il convient de souligner que la qualité des services de traduction est directement liée à la possibilité d'un accès effectif à tous les droits dans une procédure judiciaire », a-t-elle déclaré.
Selon Niman Hajdari, avocat adjoint du peuple, l'utilisation de la langue maternelle dans les procédures judiciaires est un droit garanti par la Constitution du Kosovo et les normes internationales.
« Le droit d'utiliser sa langue maternelle dans les procédures judiciaires et autres procédures devant les autorités publiques est non seulement une norme nationale, mais aussi une norme internationale. Les conventions qui garantissent cette norme font elles-mêmes partie de la Constitution de la République du Kosovo », a-t-il déclaré.
Contrairement à la question de la traduction des dossiers, le KLI affirme que la nécessité de fournir une traduction ou une interprétation lors des audiences au Département spécial du Tribunal de première instance de Pristina n’a pas été un obstacle au déroulement normal des audiences.
« Dans tous les cas suivis par le Département spécial, des interprètes ont été mis à disposition, permettant le déroulement normal des procédures, malgré les différences linguistiques. Par ailleurs, il convient de noter que le Tribunal de première instance de Pristina a commencé à mettre en œuvre un système plus avancé à cet égard, où la traduction des audiences est également effectuée simultanément, ce qui facilite le travail du tribunal et améliore son efficacité », a déclaré le chercheur Rezniqi.
D'autre part, le Représentant spécial adjoint du Secrétaire général auprès de la MINUK, Milbert Dongjoon Shin, a déclaré que le droit à la traduction dans la langue maternelle est un droit fondamental.
« Le respect des droits linguistiques est donc essentiel pour garantir que la justice, quel que soit le système, serve tous les citoyens de manière égale et sans discrimination. À cet égard, il est essentiel de renforcer la confiance du public, entre les citoyens et les institutions qui les servent, mais aussi entre les citoyens eux-mêmes », a-t-il déclaré.
Shin estime que le rapport prend également en compte le contexte social dans lequel ces défis se posent, notamment les différences générationnelles et les niveaux de maîtrise de la langue. Le rapport recommande vivement que la traduction des commentaires soit effectuée de toute urgence.
« À cet égard, le rapport formule des recommandations concrètes et constructives, fondées sur des faits, qui méritent bien sûr d'être sérieusement prises en compte par toutes les parties prenantes, y compris celles qui soutiennent le système judiciaire au Kosovo. En tant qu'avocat, l'une des recommandations qui me paraît particulièrement urgente est la nécessité de traduire les commentaires du Code pénal et du Code de procédure pénale en serbe », a-t-il déclaré.
Il est demandé que la question de la traduction ne soit pas considérée comme technique : le nombre de traducteurs devrait être augmenté.
La question de la traduction dans le système judiciaire ne doit pas être considérée comme une question technique. Cependant, outre le manque de traducteurs lors des audiences, les acteurs du système judiciaire estiment que les commentaires et autres manuels pertinents devraient également être traduits.
L'absence de commentaires et d'autres manuels, selon l'avocat Yll Zekaj, affecte également la qualité de la prestation de services.
« Le manque de commentaires dans leur langue et de décisions judiciaires affecte également la qualité des services juridiques fournis par les avocats, car ils ne peuvent pas suivre la pratique judiciaire, qui est en fait très développée dans la République du Kosovo, où la plupart des jugements et autres décisions sont publiés sur les sites Web des tribunaux », a-t-il déclaré, ajoutant que ceux qui utilisent le serbe comme langue officielle au Kosovo devraient être traités de manière égale.
Selon lui, une telle pénurie affecte à la fois la qualité des services juridiques fournis et l'entrée des nouvelles générations dans la profession, car il existe encore une pénurie de littérature sur la préparation à l'examen du barreau.
« Le manque de manuels, le manque d'autres littératures, le manque de formation adéquate en langue serbe pour préparer les jeunes avocats à passer l'examen de jurisprudence et ensuite à passer d'autres examens, que ce soit des examens pour les juges, les procureurs ou des examens du code de déontologie, qui est une condition pour devenir avocat », a-t-il déclaré.
Arrita Rezniqi, chercheuse principale à l'IKL, affirme que malgré un certain nombre de jugements publiés en serbe, il est nécessaire de traduire et de publier tous les jugements, y compris les commentaires sur des lois spécifiques qui ne sont disponibles qu'en albanais.
« Parce que la traduction de tout cela permet aux citoyens et aux avocats serbes d'avoir un accès égal à l'information. Une telle approche renforce non seulement le principe d'égalité devant la loi, mais contribue également à un système judiciaire plus transparent et plus inclusif », a-t-elle déclaré.
Le médiateur adjoint, Niman Hajdari, affirme que d'autres institutions, comme le Service correctionnel du Kosovo, rencontrent également des problèmes de traduction.
« Mais nous rencontrons également de tels problèmes au sein du système judiciaire, notamment au sein du Service pénitentiaire du Kosovo. Des personnes purgeant une peine se plaignent de recevoir des décisions en serbe avec tant de retard. Nous avons également constaté qu'au sein du Service pénitentiaire, des efforts sont déployés pour aider autant que possible ceux qui parlent serbe. Cependant, ce n'est pas la solution », a-t-il déclaré.
L'avocat Zekaj affirme que la traduction ne doit pas être considérée comme un problème technique, car cela entrave un procès équitable.
« La question de la traduction ne doit pas être considérée comme une question technique. Elle empêche les parties à la procédure d'obtenir un procès équitable. Elle peut constituer un motif de contestation d'une décision, même devant la Cour constitutionnelle. Elle doit donc être considérée par le KJC et le KPK, mais aussi par l'État lui-même, comme une question cruciale et très importante pour la réalisation des droits des parties à la procédure », a-t-il déclaré.
Selon l'avocat, il revient au Conseil de la magistrature et au Conseil des procureurs de faire des demandes dans leurs budgets pour avoir un budget plus important pour augmenter le nombre de traducteurs.
« Cependant, la République du Kosovo doit allouer un budget plus important au KJC et au KPC afin de fournir des services de traduction aux parties, pour permettre à celles-ci de comprendre les procédures dans leur propre langue », a déclaré Zekaj.
D’autre part, Hajdari affirme que le manque de traduction ne peut pas être justifié par un manque de budget.
« L'excuse avancée pendant des années selon laquelle il n'y a pas de budget ne peut pas tenir car, comme nous le savons, la Cour de Strasbourg elle-même a déclaré que la violation des droits de l'homme ne peut pas être justifiée par un manque de fonds budgétaires », a déclaré Hajdari.
L'avocat Negovan Sharanovic a déclaré qu'un certain nombre d'affaires ont été reportées précisément en raison du manque de traducteurs au Tribunal de première instance et dans les branches concernées.
« C'est aussi un problème qui doit être résolu au niveau de l'État, à savoir au niveau du Conseil judiciaire du Kosovo, afin que des mesures soient prises pour assurer un plus grand nombre de traducteurs formés au niveau de la licence, donc pas des traducteurs ordinaires, mais ceux qui doivent avoir une licence », a-t-il déclaré.
Selon lui, il est nécessaire d'engager un plus grand nombre de traducteurs, compte tenu du nombre de cas et du besoin de traduction dans les cas où les parties sont de nationalités différentes, ce qui est fréquent dans la situation actuelle.
« La solution serait d’engager un plus grand nombre de traducteurs, mais si possible, ils devraient être des traducteurs agréés ayant une bonne connaissance professionnelle de la langue », a poursuivi Sharanovic.
Les défis de la traduction dans le système judiciaire au Kosovo résultent d’une combinaison de facteurs, où, outre le manque de budget, le manque de capacité professionnelle est également mis en évidence.
« Un autre facteur est lié au fait qu'une grande partie des traducteurs maîtrisant la langue et la terminologie juridique serbes sont déjà retraités ou âgés, tandis que les jeunes générations n'ont pas suivi la formation ou l'éducation nécessaire dans cette langue. Par conséquent, la plupart des jeunes au Kosovo maîtrisent mieux les autres langues, mais pas le serbe au niveau professionnel. Cette situation crée un fossé, non seulement quantitatif, mais aussi qualitatif, en termes de connaissance de la terminologie juridique et de précision des traductions », a déclaré Rezniqi d'IKL.
Selon elle, il est nécessaire de s’attaquer à ce problème de manière durable, en créant une stratégie à long terme qui comprend l’augmentation des investissements dans la traduction juridique, le renforcement des capacités professionnelles des jeunes dans ce domaine et l’intégration de la langue serbe dans la formation de l’administration et du système judiciaire.
« Car, sans une telle intervention systématique, le manque de traducteurs pourrait constituer un obstacle structurel à une justice inclusive au Kosovo », a-t-elle déclaré.
À ce sujet, « Oath for Justice » a tenté d’interviewer un membre du Conseil judiciaire du Kosovo, mais n’a pas reçu de réponse.
Tankut Soykan, chef du bureau du Conseil de l'Europe à Pristina, affirme que l'efficacité de la justice est une exigence importante qui doit être respectée.
« Comme vous le savez, pour tous les États membres du Conseil de l'Europe, l'efficacité du système judiciaire est une condition essentielle pour garantir le respect des principes de l'État de droit. Et bien sûr, lorsque nous parlons d'efficacité, il ne s'agit pas seulement d'une question de droits de l'homme, mais aussi d'une question de développement », a-t-il déclaré.
D'autre part, Milbert Dongjoon Shin, Représentant spécial adjoint du Secrétaire général auprès de la MINUK, a déclaré que la clarification juridique, comme nous le savons, ne peut pas être un privilège réservé à quelques-uns.
« Ce rapport devrait être véritablement accessible à tous les professionnels de la justice et à tous les usagers des tribunaux. Le travail approfondi présenté par ce rapport signifie que cette table ronde n'est pas simplement une occasion de dialogue, mais un appel à l'action. À cet égard, nous appelons toutes les institutions concernées à examiner et à mettre en œuvre les recommandations présentées dans ce rapport, et à œuvrer à leur mise en œuvre », a-t-il déclaré.
L'avocat Negovan Sharanovic a déclaré que l'importance des traducteurs dans le système judiciaire est grande, car avec leur participation directe, les conditions procédurales pour la tenue des audiences sont remplies.
« Cela s'applique non seulement aux parties à la procédure, mais aussi aux témoins, à la documentation et à tout ce qui affecte la durée de la procédure. Un retard de traduction a un impact sur le retard de la procédure », a-t-il déclaré.
Dans un système judiciaire qui vise l'égalité pour tous, la langue ne peut rester un obstacle. Il ne s'agit pas d'une simple question technique, mais d'un droit garanti par la Constitution et les instruments internationaux.
Les institutions du pays doivent prendre des mesures concrètes, allouer des budgets adéquats et investir dans la construction d’un service de traduction et d’interprétation professionnel et fonctionnel au sein du système judiciaire, mais pas seulement.
Les retards de traduction retardent les procédures judiciaires
Devant les tribunaux, les mots ont du poids, mais seulement s'ils sont compris. Dans un système où les procès se déroulent dans plusieurs langues officielles, le manque de traduction de qualité n'est pas seulement un obstacle technique, c'est un obstacle à la justice.
Certaines audiences n'ont pas lieu faute d'interprète ou de retards dans la traduction des documents. Cela entraîne des retards dans le traitement des affaires et nuit à l'efficacité du tribunal.
Ce problème, qui semble essentiellement technique, viole en réalité les droits des parties à la procédure.
L'avocat Negovan Sharanovic affirme que dans sa pratique d'avocat, il a rencontré de nombreux cas où la traduction tardive, ou plutôt la livraison tardive des documents traduits, a entraîné des retards inutiles dans la procédure.
« Cela provoque un mécontentement parmi les parties et viole en fin de compte leur droit à un procès dans un délai raisonnable, qui est également prévu par la Convention européenne de sauvegarde des droits de l'homme et des libertés fondamentales », a-t-il déclaré.
Arrita Reznqi, chercheuse principale à l'Institut de droit du Kosovo (KLI), a déclaré que la Constitution de la République du Kosovo garantit le droit à un procès équitable et reconnaît l'albanais et le serbe comme langues officielles à tous les niveaux de l'administration et du pouvoir judiciaire.
« Une traduction précise et rapide des dossiers et des procédures judiciaires est essentielle pour garantir les droits fondamentaux des citoyens. En revanche, une traduction de mauvaise qualité des documents judiciaires peut avoir des conséquences juridiques et procédurales concrètes », a-t-elle déclaré.
Par ailleurs, l'Institut de droit du Kosovo a publié le 4 juin 2025 le rapport « Efficacité judiciaire dans la pratique et droits linguistiques dans le système judiciaire ». Ce rapport met en lumière les problèmes rencontrés par les tribunaux en raison du nombre limité de traducteurs et de la qualité des traductions.
Magdalena Dimitrijevic, observatrice au KLI, dit qu'ils ont surveillé systématiquement et continuent de surveiller les audiences du tribunal, la nouveauté étant la surveillance systématique à la branche de Gracanica, en plus des audiences qui ont toujours été surveillées au tribunal de première instance de Pristina.
Selon elle, dans ce cas précis, une attention particulière a été portée aux cas où les parties impliquées sont des parties issues de communautés non majoritaires, en particulier des membres serbes impliqués dans des procédures judiciaires au sein du Département spécial du Tribunal de première instance de Pristina et du Tribunal de première instance de Pristina - Branche de Graçanica.
« Ainsi, un total de 226 audiences judiciaires ont été suivies sur une période de sept mois, permettant d'identifier les pratiques procédurales suivies dans ces affaires et les défis qui affectent l'efficacité des procédures judiciaires », a-t-elle déclaré.
Le contrôleur du KLI indique que, d'après les contrôles effectués au sein du Département spécial et de la Section de Gracanica, il apparaît que les raisons les plus fréquentes de report des audiences sont dues à l'absence ou aux retards de traduction.
« Au sein du Département spécial du Tribunal de première instance de Pristina, durant la période sous surveillance, 97 audiences ont été suivies dans diverses affaires. Parmi ces audiences, environ 16.5 % ont été reportées », précise-t-elle.
Selon elle, d'autres raisons pour lesquelles les audiences ont été reportées sont le manque d'avocats de la défense, tandis que d'autres raisons sont dues à l'absence des parties lésées.
« Au cours des plusieurs mois de suivi au Tribunal de première instance de Pristina – Section de Graçanica, 129 audiences ont été suivies au sein du Département général, dont environ 14 % ont été reportées. À la Chambre pénale, le motif le plus fréquent de report était l'envoi irrégulier des convocations des parties. D'autres raisons incluent également les retards du parquet dans le dépôt des dossiers, c'est-à-dire l'absence des accusés, tandis que dans d'autres cas, la raison était l'absence des accusés », a déclaré Dimitrijevic.
Parallèlement, à la Chambre civile, les motifs de report, selon le contrôleur, étaient plus variés : absence d'interprète, voire d'expert dans une autre affaire, et absence de preuves dans une autre. Le cas le plus fréquent de report lors de ces audiences était lié à diverses raisons liées à la question de l'expertise.
Sinisha Borisavljevic, juge superviseur au tribunal de première instance de Pristina-branche de Gracanica, a déclaré lors de la table ronde du KLI qu'ils s'engagent continuellement à maintenir et à accroître la confiance des citoyens.
« Quiconque travaille dans un tribunal ou à proximité d'un tribunal sait combien le travail des juges et des représentants des tribunaux en général est responsable, et je dirais même difficile. La transparence et la responsabilité sont sans aucun doute les fondements d'un système judiciaire démocratique. Ce ne sont pas seulement des principes généraux de justice, la transparence étant un principe universel, mais elles sont également nécessaires pour maintenir la confiance dans le fonctionnement des tribunaux, en particulier au Kosovo, où de nombreuses communautés et personnes, d'une manière ou d'une autre, ne font pas confiance au système judiciaire », a-t-il déclaré.
Il a toutefois déclaré qu'avec l'aide du KLI et du Conseil judiciaire, nous essayons de justifier cette confiance afin que le système fonctionne de la meilleure façon possible.
Borisavljevic affirme qu'il y aura toujours des gens mécontents, mais la justice se situe quelque part entre les deux, ajoutant que le tribunal de Gracanica est plus précis.
« Le travail du tribunal de Gracanica est un peu plus spécifique. Grâce au soutien du président du tribunal et de ses collègues de Pristina, ainsi qu'à celui du Conseil de la magistrature, la section, à mon avis et j'espère que d'après le rapport, fonctionne très bien. Nous nous efforçons de nous améliorer, car il y a toujours matière à amélioration. La composition est hétérogène : la municipalité de Gracanica comprend des zones où vit la majorité de la population albanaise, mais aussi des communautés minoritaires, ce qui entraîne des cas spécifiques. Dans un tel environnement, il faut être particulièrement vigilant et dévoué, et j'espère donc que ces jeunes seront convaincus de notre travail », a-t-il déclaré.
Përparim Zeka, juge au tribunal de première instance de Pristina, a déclaré que la traduction est un droit fondamental.
« Le droit à la traduction et à l'interprétation, le droit d'être compris et d'être compris devant les tribunaux. Ce droit est garanti par la Constitution, les lois procédurales et les normes internationales relatives aux droits de l'homme et ne constitue pas une simple formalité administrative. The authorities denounced a false translation of the statements in question, which were expressed in shiKomori, a Comorian language. On 24th January 2025, the president’s office denied that the comments referred to the President’s son, indicating instead that he was referring to all Comorians as his children.
Moustoifa was taken into police custody after being questioned and faces charges from the public prosecutor for spreading misinformation. The National Union of Comorian Journalists contested this decision, arguing that the case falls under the jurisdiction of the National Press and Audiovisual Council and not the criminal justice system. It demanded the immediate release of the journalist. Moustoifa spent one night in the cell."

Google Translate is getting a major update that will use AI to improve the app's features.
Google is preparing a complete redesign of the app's results page. It will add smarter tools and more options than ever, so if you rely on "Translate" for quick answers, these changes could change the way you work.
They will present a “list of possible translations” for any given word. The most likely translation appears at the top in bold, along with a definition and an example of its use.
Below, the “More Translations” window displays alternative meanings, which will be labeled by type (such as adjective, noun, etc.) and real-world usage in sentences.
You can expand these alternatives – when you select one, it will jump to the top and give you additional details.
All of this means that users are getting more context when translating words. This is useful, especially since sometimes translated words can be technically correct but contextually wrong.
It's also a useful way to learn a new language, although that may not necessarily be the goal here.
The new features brought by Google Translate AI also include “Regional Variants,” which explains how the meaning of a word varies in different countries.
There is also a “Ask a Question” button, and this feature uses Google Gemini. So if you’re still confused, you can get help or clarification on the usage of a word.
Finally, the updated user interface includes an “Insights” button that guides you through context and tips for using the word in real life.

"We were talking last week about verses that some English translations of the New Testament have relegated to footnotes, changing the numbering system, going back to the King James Version of 1611.
The dozen and a half or so you’ll see marked differently in modern versions are: Matthew 17:21, 18:11 and 23:14; Mark 7:16, 9:44 and 46, 11:26 and 15:28; Luke 17:36; John 5:3b-4; Acts 8:37, 15:34, 24:6-8 and 28:29; Romans 16:24; and then the very controversial status of I John 5:7-8, which is a column itself, let alone the highly debated Mark 16:9-20 closing, which often gets a “box” or typeface change, plus the well-known story at the end of John 7 and opening verses of chapter 8 (which many scholars think is misplaced but original to the Greek text).

In the 20th century U.S., there were attempts to take the Tyndale-KJV tradition and render it into modern English for American churches (dealing with stuff like "suffer the little children,” as well as "thee" and "thou"). This produced a U.S. translation into English known today as the Revised Standard Version, which is the one I grew up with. The RSV translators used the newest Greek text consensus, which was different at a number of points from the old 1500s "Textus Receptus.”
The RSV became controversial for using the oldest texts as their benchmark, then using footnotes to indicate “other sources say,” differing from KJV readings. Some churches said “KJV or nothing”; others accepted the newer readings from older texts, but there were challenges to some of the translation choices made. This meant after 1952, when the entire RSV Bible was published, other groups pushed for their own translation into modern English, starting with the New International Version, which was worked on between 1955 and 1978. Some liked it; some did not.
The Living Bible was also an attempt (originally by one man) to take the KJV norm but adapt it or paraphrase it into modern language. Ken Taylor's complete Living Bible paraphrase came out in 1971, beating the NIV team (you may know it as "The Way," which was its paperback cover produced in large numbers through the '70s and '80s). The New American Standard Bible and New King James Version each were their own responses by different publishers to tensions around the choices made by the RSV and NIV translators.

Today, we have around a dozen solid English translations, some aimed at more conservative audiences, others more academic in aim, but all stuck with the same question: Lots of the bedrock KJV Bible underneath English language understandings of scripture is based on a consensus from the late 1500s. We have a different consensus today in the textual studies world about what the earliest readings are in some places — and it's not the KJV reading. Which means in traditional numbering, some verses get "relegated" to footnotes because they're now seen as pretty clearly additions or changes made, well after the earliest manuscript basis can be established. If we get a reading from two good manuscripts clearly dated to A.D. 250 or 275 but the KJV/Textus Receptus reading is based on manuscripts from A.D. 300 or 325 or even 410, the translators today will go with the earlier reading.
The numbering issue does surprise if you don’t know this background. If one says (for instance) Matthew 17:21 is a later interpolation into the text, you can't renumber the whole remaining New Testament from there. So the translators skip from 17:20 to 17:22, but I guarantee you there's a footnote explaining it and usually including the former reading but in smaller print at the bottom of the page.
Ironically, we saw debates over translations back to the release of the KJV itself, when "conservatives" in 1611 said, "We will keep using the Geneva Bible" because they disagreed with some of King James's readings about kings, purple cloth, monarchs, etc. The issue of seeking clarity about what God is saying to us in these texts is one still with us today."

Hajj : La technologie et la traduction au service d'un pèlerinage harmonieux et multiculturel
Malgré leurs langues et cultures diverses, plus d'un million et demi de pèlerins accomplissent leurs rites dans une harmonie saisissante. Réunis par une destination et un objectif communs, ils voient les barrières linguistiques s'effacer devant la spiritualité de l'événement et la précision de son organisation.
L'intelligence artificielle a fortement contribué à cette synergie. Grâce à des applications de traduction instantanée sur smartphones et à des dispositifs intelligents disséminés dans les points clés, les pèlerins peuvent comprendre directives et instructions en plusieurs langues, en quelques secondes seulement...
Le Ministère des Affaires Islamiques, de l'Appel et de l'Orientation a mobilisé des équipes de traduction spécialisées dans le cadre du programme du Serviteur des Deux Saintes Mosquées pour le Hajj, la Omra et la Visite. Cette initiative vise à enrichir l'expérience religieuse des pèlerins et à diffuser le message de modération à l'échelle mondiale. IQNA-Pour la première fois en plus de mille ans, le chef-d’œuvre de Ferdowsi, le Shahnameh, a été intégralement traduit en espagnol.
Cette prouesse est l’œuvre de Beatriz Salas, professeure de littérature espagnole, installée en Iran depuis près de trente ans. Pour elle, cette aventure a été bien plus qu’un simple travail académique : une véritable expérience mystique.
Beatriz Salas, née d’un père vénézuélien et d’une mère espagnole, a suivi son époux originaire du Khorasan du Sud en Iran, où elle a enseigné pendant trois décennies à l’Université de Téhéran et à l’Université islamique Azad. C’est au détour d’un appel du ministère iranien des Affaires étrangères, relayé par l’UNESCO, que le projet a vu le jour. D’abord hésitante face à l’ampleur de la tâche, elle accepte de lire l’œuvre. Dès les premières lignes, elle est saisie : "Le Shahnameh est comme une forteresse que ni le soleil ni le vent ne peuvent ébranler."
La traduction du Shahnameh, qui s'étend sur sept volumes, aura nécessité près de dix ans, entrecoupée par la pandémie. Salas l’a réalisée en prose, avec l’aide précieuse de son mari pour la prononciation, d’une ancienne étudiante pour la saisie de près de 4 000 pages, et du soutien logistique d’anciens diplomates et universitaires. Malgré des moyens limités, le premier volume a été publié en édition de luxe par l’ambassade du Venezuela, avant que Salas ne poursuive seule l’aventure, convaincue de la portée universelle de ce récit.
Le Shahnameh, épopée monumentale de 50 000 distiques, traverse les siècles en abordant des thèmes intemporels : loyauté, honneur, quête de justice, respect familial. Pour Salas, cette œuvre est une leçon de vie : "Ferdowsi enseigne comment être un meilleur humain, père, fils, membre de la société." Elle raconte comment, dès son arrivée en Iran, elle découvre la force culturelle du Shahnameh à travers deux enfants jouant Rostam et Sohrab dans un village du Khorasan. "En Espagne, on ne voit pas deux enfants jouer Don Quichotte," dit-elle avec tendresse.
Salas affirme avoir repéré de nombreuses influences du Shahnameh dans la littérature mondiale, de Cervantès à Shakespeare, et même dans des séries modernes comme Game of Thrones, dont certains éléments visuels et narratifs semblent directement inspirés de Ferdowsi.
Aujourd’hui, elle sillonne le monde hispanophone pour faire connaître l’épopée perse, multipliant les conférences, notamment auprès des jeunes. Son objectif : rendre cette œuvre vivante et accessible. Dans un monde numérique, elle compare même le Jam-e Jam, la coupe mythique du Shahnameh, à nos téléphones portables : puissants mais nécessitant des cœurs purs pour ne pas en faire un mauvais usage.
Pour Salas, "le Shahnameh est un cadeau de Dieu au peuple". Elle y voit un rempart contre l’oubli de la langue et de l’identité perse, et une source inépuisable de sagesse pour le monde entier. Une œuvre d’âme et de résistance, traduite avec foi, passion… et amour."

Built for high-volume production environments, Lara now delivers what was once considered a tradeoff: the fluency and reasoning of an LLM, and the low hallucination of machine translation, both now delivered with near-instant responsiveness.
To achieve this result, Translated co-designed a new hardware solution with Lenovo, purpose-built for translation, and developed an innovative decoding system to fully leverage the latest chips. Optimized for latency-critical scenarios like live chats, trading, and news, Lara now achieves sub-second P99 latency across the 50 most widely spoken languages. This breakthrough sets a new standard for high-quality, low-latency translation and enables new cost-efficient applications, such as only translating the portion of content needed upfront, while processing the rest on demand. Lara is now 10 to 40 times faster than leading LLMs in translation tasks, while delivering higher quality, making it a perfect fit for modern business workflows.
To achieve this performance, Lenovo provided ThinkSystem servers powered by NVIDIA’s GPUs, the world’s most advanced processors for AI workloads. Each server supports eight of the latest high-speed, interconnected GPUs, powering advancements in AI, including large language models, machine learning, model training, and high-performance computing. Through intense co-design work, Translated and Lenovo were able to optimize their architecture for the translation task. ThinkSystem servers were installed in two data centers in Washington and California, strategically positioned near major internet hubs to keep network latency between Lara and the main internet backbones under one millisecond.
To further enhance system responsiveness, Translated’s engineering team designed a new architecture, an industry first for translation AI. It combines the strengths of traditional machine translation and generative AI. This unique approach enables parallelized, context-aware generation of translations, significantly accelerating response time without compromising quality.

As part of their long-term collaboration, the two companies have also signed an agreement to implement liquid-cooling systems across Translated’s infrastructure. This will reduce energy consumption and allow for greater machine density, supporting more sustainable and scalable AI operations."
