Some weeks ago we had a very interesting discussion regarding new rates for 2012 on one of our Linkedin groups. Senior translators, junior translators and even representatives from translation agencies have exposed their point of view regarding this issue.
To the pool "Translators: will you charge higher rates next year?" which was launched by one of our group members, translators replied that, if they have not done so yet, they will consider charging higher rates from 2012 on. Nonetheless many group members highlighted that it is very important to understand the current climate regarding global economy as well as translation industry current situation. "We have very high inflation rate in Argentina… I will definitely consider higher rates for local clients, but, as usual, the market will tell us how far we can go. I do not believe higher rates will work in international markets, considering the current situation […]" stated one group member from Argentina.

A lo largo de los años he ido adquiriendo una creciente preocupación por el medio ambiente y su preservación. Supongo que el hecho de traducir textos relacionados con el ámbito del medio ambiente y la ecología ha contribuido y mucho. Así pues, miro de aplicar preceptos sostenibles y ecológicos a mi vida cotidiana, pero en el trabajo no siempre es fácil.
Una de los gestos menos ecológicos que me veo obligada a hacer es imprimir, aunque lo haga en papel ya usado por una cara. Se pueden revisar textos y traducciones en pantalla, claro, pero tengo comprobado que detecto mucho mejor las faltas y los lapsus y tengo una mejor visión de conjunto del texto si lo tengo impreso en papel (con la ventaja que supone poder despegarse de la pantalla durante unas horas).

Another interesting session I attended at the Gilbane Conference in Boston last week was called Creating Multilingual Taxonomies.

Translation tests have become a hot topic among professional translators. Many are strictly against them and claim that their skills and expertise can be shown by giving samples or that recommendations are much better. In some situations I agree completely, especially for experienced translators with great recommendations and references. However, I do think there is also a time and place for translation tests.
