El Diccionario de autores latinoamericanos de César Aira es uno de los libros clave en la crítica literaria contemporánea. Somos muchos los que descubrimos autores que no conocíamos, o cambiamos la idea que teníamos de otros que sí habíamos leído, gracias al Diccionario. Escrito con la dosis exacta de erudición y arbitrariedad, de conocimiento y malicia, vuelvo a él continuamente, sin razón previa, sin la necesidad de estar “trabajando” tal o cual tema (no me verán jamás escribir o decir que “estoy trabajando” cuando me refiero al pensamiento o la literatura). Recuerdo ahora un comentario resignado de Aira, arriesgando que, pese a haber centenares de entradas y escritores mencionados, seguramente se iría a reparar en el autor olvidado, en el que falta, en el que no se cita. No seré yo, entonces, quien cumpla esa profecía diez años después de su publicación (ahora que lo pienso, quizás lo más “revolucionario” que haya pasado en Argentina en 2001 fue la publicación del Diccionario…) más allá, por cierto, de que fue escrito a mediados de los 80, y que una clandestina versión fotocopiada circulaba por aquí y por allá en ese entonces.

The last 48 hours of my life have been entirely occupied by the Société Française des Traducteurs (SFT). The “Journée Mondiale de la Traduction” Conference took place in Paris yesterday, and today’s event was the SFT general meeting.

I can say about 45 percent of the annually published books are in translation. Most of them are used as academic textbooks. Other genres in translation include general psychology, general management, and novels and at a smaller print run, poetry books. There are also books published in very scholarly and professional fields for very specific groups of readers. Books on philosophy and social sciences, concepts of which are imported and originally produced outside of Iran, are also published in translation.

Une conférence nationale sur le projet de document de politique linguistique s’est tenu au Centre international de conférences de Bamako (CICB) du 6 au 8 décembre. La cérémonie d’ouverture était présidée par le ministre de l’Education, de l’Alphabétisation et des Langues nationales, Salikou Sanogo. La rencontre s’inscrit dans la dynamique de valorisation de nos langues nationales. Les participants ont analysé la situation des langues nationales et l’identification des besoins liés aux langues nationales et langues partenaires ainsi qu’au rappel de la vision de l’UA et de l’Acalan. A l’issue de la rencontre, il a été adopté le projet de document de politique linguistique nationale.

Intellectuals have long been inclined to regard their own age as one of gross ignorance and impending collapse. David Grunwald acknowledges my hat tip to his Ortsbo coverage but reiterates that translation is a commodity. His basic argument is that translation does not involve creativity. I half agree with the premise that translation does not imply creativity in the same sense that artistic creation does, but I also reject the corollary. You can’t conclude from this starting point that translation is a commodity. Please allow me to highlight the fact I remain astonished by the sight of the owner of a translation agency publicly stating that he believes translation is a commodity. First of all, translation is a service. If you provide service as a commodity, how do you distinguish yourself from the competition? There are only two ways: fiercer marketing or lower rates. That is the eternal race to the bottom that leads us to the clowns from Lackuna.

 If you walk into a Davidson County Courtroom you're more likely to see a translator or interpreter. They are there to help the ever increasing population of non-English speaking residents.

Hace 30 años el poeta y traductor uruguayo Roberto Mascaró, se exilió en Estocolmo (Suecia) huyendo de la dictadura de su país.

IN HER ENGAGING new biography of Charles Dickens, Claire Tomalin writes about an encounter between two giants of 19th-century literature.

We are told it took place in 1862, in Dickens’s office on Wellington Street in London, when Fyodor Dostoevsky was in town and called in. The Russian was a fan, having read Dickens in prison, and years later, it is said, he wrote to a friend about their encounter.

Tomalin includes close to 20 lines of an English translation of Dostoevsky’s account. It is, as she notes, “an amazing report”, as Dickens relays his inner self with brutal honesty. According to Dostoevsky, “There were two people in him, he told me: one who feels as he ought to feel and one who feels the opposite. From the one who feels the opposite I make my evil characters, from the one who feels as a man ought to feel I try to live my life. Only two people? I asked.”

The account was translated by Stephanie Harvey and published in the Dickensian in 2002. But it turns out the encounter might never have taken place. Last weekend Tomalin said she appears to have fallen for a hoax. She initially found the account of the meeting “electrifying” but began to have doubts after her biography was published. Then she and her husband, the writer Michael Frayn, looked for the original source of the account, not the translation she had relied on. She could find nothing to back up the English account, and other biographers who used the translation also admitted that they were unable to verify its source.

Tomalin says Russian scholars would like the translation to be authentic, and she points out that Dostoevsky and Dickens may have been in London at the same time in 1862 and that both spoke French, so they could have met and communicated.

These are confusing times, but then, the fault lies with us because though we think we understand what the Americans are saying, we actually don’t. And this is not due to any language problem, but because we refuse to understand. When the Americans call themselves the ‘leading champions’ of liberty and human rights, they are right because they spare no efforts in ensuring that liberty and human rights are respected at all costs. We may think otherwise but here again, we are wrong and the mistake lies in our understanding!

SHE BURIES her face in her hands and winces at the memory of her debut alongside Giovanni Trapattoni when he was unveiled as Republic of Ireland manager at the RDS in May 2008. While he might have been accustomed to the bright lights of press conferences, it was a whole new ball game for Manuela Spinelli, the Italian woman who has been Trapattoni’s interpreter since his appointment to the post.

Until then, her work largely had her sitting in a booth at the back of a room, headphones on, simultaneously translating for a client during a meeting.

Senior Olivia Waring, a chemistry major with an interest in Chinese language and translation, has been awarded the 2012 Daniel M. Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship, one of the highest awards given to Princeton University undergraduates.

Waring, a native of Randolph, N.J, plans to use the Sachs award to pursue postgraduate studies in linguistics and philology at the University of Oxford, with an emphasis on Mandarin Chinese and Tibetan languages. Her hope is to help revive disappearing dialects and translate key scientific works into those languages.
