Much has been written about the huge changes in our working lives during the past two years – driven of course by necessity and concerns for safety. In 2022, the pandemic is very much still a fact of life for many of us. However, it’s fair to say that we’ve learned to adapt to new behavioral patterns and expectations as we do our jobs. If we are among the millions of “knowledge workers” who find ourselves with more freedom to choose when and where we work, then hopefully, we are making the most of the opportunity to strike a better balance between home and working life.

While many employees are anxious to get "back to work," the truth is, the traditional workplace may never look the same. Many companies like Amazon, Twitter and Microsoft declared their intention to lean into a remote office set-up post-pandemic.
One thing is clear: Remote work is here to stay. Research revealed remote work had a positive impact on overall employee experience, and in a recent FlexJobs survey, 95% of respondents reported a higher productivity level while working remotely.

COVID-19 is ushering in an entirely different future in terms of working life. However, forces such as digitalization have been altering the workforce long before the pandemic.
OECD research suggests that 31% of jobs could be radically transformed as a result of automation. At the same time, specialized jobs are being created elsewhere. These big picture trends mean that many organizations are already preparing for a now-accelerated future.

For the past 150 years, work has been characterized by “skill stability.” The social pact in most developed economies was characterized by a “learn, do, and retire” model that covered an average life span of 65 years. Workers could rely on the fact that an educational or technical training investment—from accounting to zoo keeping—combined with a relatively modest effort to keep skills up-to-date, would provide a 30-year return in salary, advancement, and opportunity.

A growing body of research points to the growth of the alternative workforce—particularly as it relates to many millennials “opting out” of the traditional workforce. A recent 2017 study reports that overall self-employment is likely to triple to 42 million workers by 2020, with millennials leading the way. The study predicts that 42 percent of all self-employed individuals in the United States are likely to be millennials by 2020.1 As people consider new forms of employment, many organizations are turning toward the growing alternative workforce segment and seeking to hire more workers off their balance sheets as part of a workforce ecosystem.

Heather McGowan is co-author with Chris Shipley of The adaptation advantage: Let go, learn fast, and thrive in the Future of Work. She talked to the digital manufacturing institute MxD about the future of work and why the key to professional achievement will be constant reinvention. She believes many of us will need to pick up the pace of acquiring new skills and maintaining adaptability — lest technology fly past, potentially rendering us irrelevant.
She preaches the need for a monumental “reshifting” in perspective: While previous generations went to college or mastered a trade in order to pursue a career—in other words, they learned in order to work—people today need to think in opposite terms. “We’ve got to work in order to learn continuously.”

The term Gig Economy describes the increasing reliance on freelancers and contractors that work on a “per gig basis” rather than having a single employer. This is a trend that has been growing, at least in part, thanks to new technology that facilitates fast and secure transactions, even over distance.
With the Gig Economy growing at a rapid rate, it’s likely that more and more of us will soon work in this manner. In fact, the choice might be made for many of us in the next few years, especially in the wake of Covid.

Virtual Reality (VR) has been plagued for decades now by a lack of understanding about the problem it’s supposed to solve. There have been at least a few hype cycles over the last few decades, none of which resulted in anything resembling mass adoption. However, VR growth has exploded over the past 18 months and is finally approaching mainstream consumer use. But what about for business use? Does VR have a place outside of niche applications? Does it have a place in the unified communications (UC) suite?

We are at a particularly interesting inflection point when it comes to technology. The ongoing pandemic has in fact pushed technology adoption to an all-time high, a tipping point where a critical mass of the workforce not only has access to connectivity, communications and collaboration technology, and the skills to effectively use them. Today more than ever, as hybrid working becomes a regular part of the workforce’s daily life, both employers and employees are now looking at how technology can make them work better or run the company more efficiently and seamlessly. For a hybrid workforce, the user experience is going to be central. As much as possible, employees need to feel like they are sitting beside or in the same room as their colleagues, customers and business partners, even when they are joining in remotely.

Antiwork: It's a trend bolstered by younger workers, as Gen Zers make their mark on the labor market. In America, it looks similar to similar youth-led movements against work in other countries, especially China, where young people are "lying flat" by decentering a drive to constantly be more productive and competitive at work, and instead find happiness in their own lives and relaxation.

After a long period of disruption, we’re attempting to establish a ‘new normal’. Companies are implementing their return-to-work strategies. Employee experience is centre stage.
Our report, ‘The Future of Work in 2021’, explores how the pandemic has changed people’s attitudes, beliefs and expectations.
We spoke to 4,000 people to understand their vision of the ‘new normal’ working world.
A staggering 46% of people expect to see significant changes in their open space when they return to work. Those who work in large, open plan offices are 30% more likely to want change.
We also discovered that 73% want to continue working remotely at least one to two days a week.

Today, almost 500 days after the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a global pandemic, the world has fundamentally changed: While vaccines have allowed some of us to glimpse the light at the end of the tunnel, many continue to struggle.
Almost all of us have faced loss and longing, unanswerable questions and new, daily hardships in the most mundane of tasks. But we’ve also shattered norms, abandoned old routines and rewritten what we thought were the ironclad rules of work. Today, though it is because of a wretched pandemic, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink and reshape how and where we work. (Spoiler alert: The raging debate between office and remote is a false choice—it’s neither.) Sure, we won’t be going into the office every day, but we also won’t abolish our time together; the future of work is more about the digital tools that allow us to balance doing our best work with living our best lives.
