This past year, business models have been reinvented. Supply chains have been restructured. Promises of new scientific breakthroughs have been suddenly realized. Productivity, we now know, can thrive virtually. In the process of tackling global challenges that even the most forward-thinking leaders never fathomed, organizations have transformed. How do we capitalize on this new momentum? How do we accelerate the innovation we have tapped? How do we optimize for the new global reality?

“Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.” The words of the great industrialist Henry Ford, from over a century ago, still resonate today. In the knowledge economy, the assembly line has been replaced with a new method of output. The future of work depends on your ability to think - and to think critically - about ways to innovate, create and lead through change. The challenge is: the world wants to rob us of our greatest skill. Indeed, we are living the docudrama of The Social Dilemma - and it’s crippling the future of work. Social media, combined with a desperate desire for distraction (brought on by the pandemic) makes everyone have the attention span of a ferret after a double espresso. Nervous and uncertain about the future, bombarded by 500 million tweets per day, how can we create new ideas - without the focus and fortitude to develop them? The future of work depends on focus. Because where you put your attention is where you find your results.

The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly been one of the most disruptive periods in most organizations' history. For instance, during 2020, GDP in advanced economies plummeted, with many businesses having to shut for prolonged periods, and nearly all having to rapidly adapt to the changing conditions.
Indeed, McKinsey recently argued that one of the few plus points from the pandemic was it reinforced the importance of building change capabilities within our organizations. As we begin to see some kind of normality returning to life, there has been an understandable desire to examine how we can better prepare ourselves for the future.

The pandemic has shattered antiquated assumptions about work design. Executives urgently need to banish remaining myths about hybrid work models and redesign work around a human-centric model to keep and secure critical digital-era talent and deliver business outcomes. Download our research to dispel hybrid workplace myths and learn realities like:
- If you insist on a return to fully onsite work, you risk losing talent.
- Human-centric design, featuring flexibility and empathy, is what drives productivity and engagement.
- Innovation is best driven by intentional collaboration, not in-person serendipity.
- There are ways to offer employees flexibility, even when location isn’t flexible

I am quite certain that distributed work is here to stay. Even Dr. Anthony Fauci at the US CDC is surprised at how long this pandemic is lasting. With the highly infectious Omicron variant becoming dominant in many countries, it does not look like it will be over soon. In a few months time, some people will have been working distributively for two years, not at their request, but having found new work norms to get things done. I have spoken to many people who will not go back to a carbon-intensive work commute.
Here is a review of some thoughts on distributed work throughout 2021.

Accelerated changes, driven especially by the health crisis, which has impacted worldwide, reaching economic and social sectors, has reinforced the relevance of technological transformation at each point of contact, and in turn generating a change in habits and behaviors, aspects that influence the world of work in the same way.
These changes impact the main labor forces, which already maintained an evolutionary rhythm, but which has accelerated so rapidly that it has proposed a high degree of uncertainty for both companies and candidates and has promoted the appearance of new trends.

For organisations, metaverses promise to create more realistic, and therefore more productive, immersive meetings made possible with 3D virtual reality headsets. Microsoft is already rolling out Mesh for Microsoft Teams to make online collaborations more fun and effective through helping people connect in less impersonal ways, for example, through sharing body language, having water cooler conversations and engaging more in team meetings.

As the number of predictions for the metaverse grow, there is one unifying sentiment: Enterprises will need to be ready for the coming adjustments of work when it comes to utilizing the digital platform. Gartner, as part of a study, forecasts that in four years time, one-in-four people will spend an hour or more in the metaverse on a daily basis.
“Vendors are already building ways for users to replicate their lives in digital worlds,” said Marty Resnick, research vice president at Gartner. “From attending virtual classrooms to buying digital land and constructing virtual homes, these activities are currently being conducted in separate environments. Eventually, they will take place in a single environment, the metaverse, with multiple destinations across technologies and experiences.”

What is the shelf life of your professional skills? According to research, not very long. In fact, one in three skills from an average 2017 job posting in IT, finance, or sales is obsolete due to continued digital innovation. If that stat doesn’t shock you, it should. The skills we have today are expiring fast, with some experts estimating their life expectancy at just two to three years.
While we can’t place blame solely on the global COVID-19 pandemic, it and other world events have accelerated us toward an environment of unrelenting business transformation and permanently pixelated work arrangements. Employers must now prioritize a more inclusive, purpose-driven culture through broader strategic skilling investments to retain and attract top talent.

We are witnessing the Great Questioning across the globe as more people become aware that the systems we have built are falling apart, especially when it comes to work and life. Organizational structures that were created in 1911 are still the foundation of many companies around the world and they no longer serve where we are headed.
In 2022, there will be continued turmoil around the world and it will allow people to see the divergent paths we can take: one leading to more misery and suffering and another opening portals of opportunity and possibility. And, a new conscious business movement is emerging around the world in the most unlikely places. Here are four trends on our horizon:

As the world adapts to hybrid strategies – a mix of both digital and physical components – one possible working future that’s becoming increasingly hard to ignore involves the metaverse.
It’s a buzzword, yes, but it’s also a very real scenario for the future of work.
A metaverse is an artificial universe made possible by AR and VR technology. Imagine donning a VR headset and ‘attending’ a business event, meeting people and even presenting, as if you were there in person. Difference is, you’re there virtually while your physical self is at home, or in your office.

Current trends in AI are nothing if not remarkable. Day after day, we hear stories about systems and machines taking on tasks that, until very recently, we saw as the exclusive and permanent preserve of humankind: making medical diagnoses, drafting legal documents, designing buildings, and even composing music.
Our concern here, though, is with something even more striking: the prospect of high-level machine intelligence systems that outperform human beings at essentially every task. This is not science fiction. In a recent survey the median estimate among leading computer scientists reported a 50% chance that this technology would arrive within 45 years.
