Virginia's Loudoun County Public Schools uses “genius hours” and student presentations to deepen students’ investment in the learning process.
Tech giant Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is telling US schools that there’s a price to be paid for restricting student access to its artificial intelligence tools. Google will link school access to its search engine with AI adoption, prompting backlash from educators and lawmakers over student access and antitrust concerns. The New York Times reported on Tuesday that, starting early next year, schools that fully disable the company’s AI will also lose access to its search engine, which is by far the most used internet search tool in the world.

What if the greatest AI divide in education isn’t about who has access to artificial intelligence, but who is being taught how to use it? As some students learn to think critically with AI, others may be left using it as a shortcut or navigating it without guidance. With Canadian research revealing significant gaps in teacher AI training, are we unintentionally creating two educational futures, one that prepares students for an AI-driven world and another that leaves them behind?

"Does artificial intelligence help students learn? That’s a question many teachers and parents want answered, as the new educational technology is rapidly spreading in classrooms. Normally, meta-analyses would be the right place to look, since they’re supposed to gather a scattered body of research and make sense of it by pointing to where the preponderance of evidence lies. And indeed, there are 39 of them, all reporting substantial benefits for AI in education. But it appears that the studies synthesizing that evidence are themselves unreliable — and the peer-review process failed to catch the problems."
