The Unicorn Project - Gene Kim podcast by DevSecOps

Edwards Deming [...] In his 1982 book, "Out of the Crisis", Deming explained in detail why Japan was ahead of the American manufacturing industry [...] he laid the foundation for DevOps 40 years later.

Eli Goldratt published "The Goal" in 1984, focusing on the "Theory of Constraints", [...] The Goal were a precursor to the DevOps movement 40 years later.

In January 2013, [...] Gene Kim published "The Phoenix Project". He used the same format as Goldratt, telling the story in a fictional novel format with characters who were easily identifiable within the software manufacturing process, from a manager's point of view. The Phoenix Project is now one of the most important books in the industry, and is used as a starting point for companies interested in participating in a DevOps transformation.

It's now six years later, 2019. Gene's new book, The Unicorn Project, will be released at the upcoming DevOps Enterprise Summit in Las Vegas on October 28. [...]

In this broadcast, Gene and I talk about how the Unicorn Project aligns with the Phoenix Project [...]

Project plans frequently fall apart during execution. With changes in work scope, time & resources required to perform tasks, it is very difficult to schedule daily tasks across projects and resource groups to meet project goals, including ROI maximization.

We will discuss a new approach [that includes Critical Chain] for unifying project teams and stakeholders at all levels, for enhancing the flow of productive work, and for aggregating risk for much higher portfolio reliability and for increasing the Return on Investment.

PMI Project of the year 2019 - Embraer E190 E2 project | Project Management Institute | Critical Chain Project Management | Scoop.it

Building new commercial aircraft is a must to keep people moving. But Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer had an even bolder goal: design, develop and deliver a second-generation jet with a massive supply chain that would give the company a competitive advantage. On top of that, it vowed to complete the project faster than any other aerospace firm. To complete the first model from its E2 series, the organization established a formal program management process and built a skilled team of project managers, 80 percent of whom had PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification. During planning, teams reviewed lessons learned from previous private and military aircraft projects, replicating tested scheduling strategies, supply chain management and early-warning mechanisms.

Improving focus and predictability with critical chain project management - 8 page article by Joe Cooper | PMI.org | Critical Chain Project Management | Scoop.it

Does it seem that projects in your organization require frequent firefighting where due dates are challenged and heroics are necessary to get things done? Do projects often go from green to red overnight? [...] Lack of focus and inability to manage uncertainty are two significant causes of project delays, diminished quality, excessive project durations, and poor team spirit. By addressing these root causes, critical chain project management (CCPM) techniques improve project speed, quality, on-time performance, and team morale. This paper demonstrates how reducing nonproductive multitasking enables team members to achieve high-speed execution and high-quality deliverables, and leads to a greater sense of accomplishment, and an increased capacity to think and to innovate. ...

PMI Luxembourg Critical Chain Conference (slides available) - 29th October 2019 | Critical Chain Project Management | Scoop.it

Conference 47 slides presentation + Appendices downloadable.

Most projects managed traditionally with the Critical Path Method or the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) suffer from time and budget overruns and often original specifications have to be abandoned. Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) [....]

  • The Critical Chain is defined by the longest chain of dependencies between tasks, taking into account critical resources conflicts. But the “Critical Chain Way” is much more than this limited definition.
  • CCPM can be used both for individual projects large or small or portfolios of projects.
  • A different technique for estimating task durations [....]
  • The project is protected from uncertainty and problems thanks to a project buffer (safeties are removed from individual tasks). [....]

[....] Over 500 companies have implemented it including: Mazda, Siemens, Embraer, Procter & Gamble, Louis Vuitton, Safran, Boeing, Lilly and the United States armed forces. Critical Chain Project Management allows projects to be finished on time, within budget and without compromises on original specifications. Less is More: How to Get Better Results Faster out of Changes – with very small Effort from Top-Management and Consulting

Conventional wisdom and common practice tell us that large-scale enterprise transformations require unusually courageous leadership, take lots of time (also top management attention), cost a bunch of money, and can only be accelerated by deploying an army of top-notch change agents, coaches, and consultants.

This presentation will flip this on its head, showcasing two real-world examples of dramatic large-scale performance improvement achieved with minimalist approaches – based on TOC/CCPM, agile and self-organization concepts. The co-presenters then share two models for how any leader or manager with the right motivation can replicate and perhaps even amplify this “less-is-more” model of success.
