The winners of the first annual AI film festival Celebrate the artists making the impossible AI filmmaking.
Runway is one of the leading companies in the development of artificial intelligence tools and introduced the winners of their first annual AI film festival that took place this winter. Of the hundreds of submissions, judges picked ten finalists and released their work to the public. The main goal of this competition was to celebrate “the art and artists making the impossible at the forefront of AI filmmaking.” We were curious and analyzed how different techniques were integrated into the winning films: from AI-generated art to whole 3D scene scans. Let’s take a look at the amazing new technology now available to any creator.
Requirements were that videos were from 1 to 10 minutes long, and one of the main festival criteria was naturally to use neural networks in the work. There was no strict definition of which AI to use, or how to feature it in the film, so the variety of tools used in the winning videos is really impressive. The use of state-of-the-art technology counted as only 25% of a film’s success – judges also took into account the quality of the overall film composition, originality, and of course, the artistic message.
Using art generators as part of AI filmmaking
One of the shorts that impressed me most is “PLSTC” by Laen Sanches (we will embed it below). Basically, it’s just a rapidly edited sequence of hundreds of pictures, which illustrate different ocean inhabitants wrapped in plastic and unable to escape. The director took strong images, created by AI art generator Midjourney, upscaled them with help of the AI tool Topaz Labs, and put them together slightly animated. By precisely choosing the matching visuals, he achieved a very definite and coherent film atmosphere. Not a word is said, but the message is crystal clear, and it hurts. Dramatic classical music also helps evoke deep emotions, and the result is a small narrative wonder. It didn’t place for any of the prizes, but it is definitely worth watching.
P. asymbiotica, a bacteria that normally grows insideC.elegans roundworms, uses these nematodes as Trojan horses to invade insect larvae. It works like this: a nematode invades the larva's body and regurgitates P. asymbiotica; the bacteria kills the insect's cells; and the nematode feasts on the dying larva's flesh. Thus, the nematodes and bacteria enjoy a beautiful symbiotic relationship.
To kill the insect cells, P. asymbiotica secretes tiny, spring-loaded syringes, scientifically known as "extracellular contractile injection systems," that carry toxic proteins inside a hollow "needle" with a spike on one end. Small "tails" extend from the base of the syringe — imagine the landing gear of a space probe — and these tails bind to proteins on the surface of insect cells. Once bound, the syringe stabs its needle through the cell membrane to release its cargo.
In previous studies, scientists isolated these syringes from Photorhabdus bacteria and also discovered that some could target mouse cells, not just insect cells. This raised the possibility that such syringes could be modified for use in humans. To test whether this idea might be feasible, the team first loaded the syringe's hollow tube with proteins of their choosing. Then, they used AlphaFold to better understand how the syringes hone in on insect cells, so they could be modified to target human cells instead. They used the AI system to predict the structure of the bottom of the syringe's landing gear — the part that first makes contact with the target cell surface. They then altered this structure so it would latch onto surface proteins found only on human cells.
Without Deepmind's AlphaFold, the researchers would have had to conduct this analysis using advanced microscopy techniques and crystallography, meaning detailed studies of the landing gear's atomic structure, Joseph Kreitz, a doctoral student at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT and first author of the study, told Live Science in an email. "This could have taken many months," Kreitz said. "With AlphaFold, we were able to obtain predicted structures of candidate tail fiber designs almost in real-time, significantly accelerating our efforts to reprogram this protein."
The researchers then used their modified syringes to tweak cells' genomes in lab dishes. Specifically, they delivered components of the powerful CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tool into cells to cut and paste sections of DNA into their genomes. The team also used the syringes to insert tiny DNA-snipping scissors called zinc-finger deaminases into cells.
They also used the system to deliver toxic proteins into cancer cells in lab dishes. And finally, they injected the syringes into live mice and found that their cargo could only be detected in the targeted areas and did not spark a harmful immune reaction. For this last experiment, the team used AlphaFold to design their syringes to specifically target mouse cells.
These experiments demonstrate that the syringes can serve as "programmable protein delivery devices with possible applications in gene therapy, cancer therapy and biocontrol," the authors concluded. In contrast to therapies that deliver genetic instructions, like DNA or RNA, into cells, these protein-carrying syringes could provide "better control over the dose and half-life of a therapeutic inside cells," Kreitz and the study's senior author Feng Zhang told Live Science in an email. That's because genetic instructions prompt cells to build proteins for themselves, whereas the syringes would come with a premeasured dose of protein. This precise dosing would be useful for treatments involving transcription factors, which tweak a cell's gene activity, and chemotherapy, which has toxic effects at high doses, they said.
The tiny syringes could also potentially be programmed to fight disease-causing bacteria in the body, Ericson and Pilhofer wrote. And in the future, it may be possible for scientists to connect multiple syringes to form multi-barreled complexes. "These might enable more cargo to be delivered per target cell than with a single injection system," they suggested. "However, we note that this system is still in its infancy; further efforts will be required to characterize the behavior of this system in vivo before it can be applied in clinical or commercial settings," Kreitz and Zhang told Live Science. The team is now studying how well the syringes diffuse through different tissues and organs, and continuing to examine how the immune system reacts to the new protein delivery system.

Wonder Dynamics is making the visual effects (VFX) process more accessible and affordable by developing AI and machine learning tools that allow filmmakers to produce VFX and CGI elements faster and at a significantly lower price point.

An Australian company resurrects flesh of lost species to demonstrate potential of meat grown from cells as food source. Recently, they created a mammoth meatball, resurrecting the flesh of the long-extinct animals. The project aims to demonstrate the potential of meat grown from cells, without the slaughter of animals, and to highlight the link between large-scale livestock production and the destruction of wildlife and the climate crisis. The mammoth meatball was produced by Vow, an Australian company, which is taking a different approach to cultured meat. There are scores of companies working on replacements for conventional meat, such as chicken, pork and beef.
But Vow is aiming to mix and match cells from unconventional species to create new kinds of meat. The company has already investigated the potential of more than 50 species, including alpaca, buffalo, crocodile, kangaroo, peacocks and different types of fish. The first cultivated meat to be sold to diners will be Japanese quail, which the company expects will be in restaurants in Singapore this year. “We have a behaviour change problem when it comes to meat consumption,” said George Peppou, CEO of Vow . “The goal is to transition a few billion meat eaters away from eating [conventional] animal protein to eating things that can be produced in electrified systems.
“And we believe the best way to do that is to invent meat. We look for cells that are easy to grow, really tasty and nutritious, and then mix and match those cells to create really tasty meat.” Tim Noakesmith, who cofounded Vow with Peppou, said: “We chose the woolly mammoth because it’s a symbol of diversity loss and a symbol of climate change.”
The creature is thought to have been driven to extinction by hunting by humans and the warming of the world after the last ice age. The initial idea was from Bas Korsten at creative agency Wunderman Thompson: “Our aim is to start a conversation about how we eat, and what the future alternatives can look and taste like. Cultured meat is meat, but not as we know it.” Plant-based alternatives to meat are now common but cultured meat replicates the taste of conventional meat.
Vow worked with Prof Ernst Wolvetang, at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering at the University of Queensland, to create the mammoth muscle protein. His team took the DNA sequence for mammoth myoglobin, a key muscle protein in giving meat its flavor, and filled in the few gaps using elephant DNA. This sequence was placed in myoblast stem cells from a sheep, which replicated to grow to the 20bn cells subsequently used by the company to grow the mammoth meat. “It was ridiculously easy and fast,” said Wolvetang. “We did this in a couple of weeks. Initially, the idea was to produce dodo meat, he said, but the DNA sequences needed do notvyet exist!"
Mitochondria are critical organelles that form networks within our cells, generate energy dynamically, contribute to diverse cell and organ function, and produce a variety of critical signaling molecules, such as cortisol. This intracellular microbiome can differ between cells, tissues, and organs. Mitochondria can change with disease, age, and in response to the environment. Single nucleotide variants in the circular genomes of human mitochondrial DNA are associated with many different life-threatening diseases. Mitochondrial DNA base editing tools have established novel disease models and represent a new possibility toward personalized gene therapies for the treatment of mtDNA-based disorders.
Primary mtDNA-based disorders are currently incurable [2] and these diseases often cause significant illness and can lead to premature death [2]. Moreover, variations in mtDNA can occur in individuals who are otherwise healthy and have been implicated in the etiology of age-related multifactorial diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic conditions, heart failure, and several forms of cancer [10,15]. The increasing prevalence of these conditions in our aging population highlights the need for the development of novel approaches for the investigation and prevention or treatment of these disorders [12,16].
Gene editing techniques can introduce targeted DNA modifications in cells or tissues to correct a genetic defect, and have already been successfully used to correct pathogenic mutations in the nuclear genome [17,18]. Mitochondrial gene therapy is a relatively new idea that, despite several challenges, has seen significant progress over the last few years [19]. Mitochondrial gene editing technologies can be designed to specifically act on variant mtDNA molecules, driving a heteroplasmic state toward a healthy, wild-type mtDNA population [20,21].
Broadly, two distinct modalities are currently used for mtDNA manipulation: (i) nuclease-based and (ii) base editing approaches. Conceptually, nuclease-based methods can be utilized to decrease the amount of variant mtDNA in mitochondria by specifically targeting and cleaving the mutant mtDNA molecules [22,23]. This technique relies on the premise that double-strand breaks (DSBs) in mtDNA induce the rapid degradation of the linearized molecule, instead of its repair [20,23]. If mutant mtDNA is specifically eliminated, the residual mtDNA, mostly wild-type, replicates and repopulates the organelle, resulting in the restoration of normal mtDNA levels. In particular, nuclease-based approaches have been described to include mitochondrially targeted restriction endonucleases (mitoREs), zinc-finger nucleases (mtZFNs), and transcription activator-like effector nucleases (mitoTALENs) [20,22,23,24,25,26]. These techniques have been extensively reviewed elsewhere [27,28,29,30]. Additionally, mitochondrially targeted CRISPR (mitoCRISPR) systems have also been reported [31,32,33,34]. However, these mitoCRISPR platforms have yet to be widely accepted within the scientific community due to the challenging nature of guide RNA (gRNA) import into the mitochondrial matrix, as well as a notable lack of follow-up studies [27,35,36].
Despite their potential usefulness for shifting heteroplasmy, mitochondrically-targeted nucleases are unable to correct variant genomes [20,22]. Therefore, nuclease-based approaches cannot be utilized to rescue pathological conditions in homoplasmic states [20,28]. As mentioned above, the main alternative to nuclease-based strategies for mtDNA manipulation is base editing [37,38]. Consequently, in this work, the scientists focused on recent advancements in the field of mitochondrial base editing, which holds the potential to treat diseases caused by pathogenic mtDNA point mutations in both heteroplasmic and homoplasmic contexts without the risk for mtDNA depletion [39,40]. This review also sought to provide insights into paths toward the development of therapeutic approaches for mtDNA-based disorders and the establishment of mitochondrial disease models to better understand the biology of these devastating diseases.
The rational design of proteins with desired functions requires a comprehensive description of the functional building blocks. The evolutionary conserved functional units constitute nature's toolbox; however, they are not readily available to protein designers.
This study focuses on protein units of subdomain size that possess structural properties and amino acid residues sufficient to carry out elementary reactions in the catalytic mechanisms. The interactions within such elementary functional loops (ELFs) and the interactions with the surrounding protein scaffolds constitute the descriptor of elementary function. The computational approach to deriving descriptors directly from protein sequences and structures and applying them in rational design was implemented in a proof-of-concept DEFINED-PROTEINS software package. Once the descriptor is obtained, the ELF can be fitted into existing or novel scaffolds to obtain the desired function. For instance, the descriptor may be used to determine the necessary spatial restraints in a fragment-based grafting protocol.
The researchers illustrated the approach by applying it to well-known cases of ELFs, including phosphate-binding P-loop, diphosphate-binding glycine-rich motif, and calcium-binding EF-hand motif, which could be used to jumpstart templates for user applications.
Two of Uranus’ moons may be home to active oceans hidden beneath their surfaces. The new finding was uncovered when astronomers looked back at radiation data that Voyager 2 captured about the planet when it passed by over 40 years ago. According to that new data, the moons Ariel and Miranda could possibly house underground liquid water oceans.
It’s an intriguing discovery that only helps to heighten the need for better exploration of Uranus and its 27 different moons. By getting a better understanding of the possible oceans on Uranus’ moons, we could possibly learn more about the moons themselves, where they originated from, and even whether or not they were ever capable of housing life of some significance.
A new study on the findings has been accepted for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The study details the radiation readings that astronomers looked at, some of which seem to suggest that at least one of these two Uranus moons is ejecting material into space, possibly from an underground ocean.
The exact cause and means by which the plasma is being ejected into the solar system are unclear, as the readings we have to look at are all 40 years old at this point. However, with scientists calling for new missions to Uranus, we could likely see more data on the possibility that Uranus’ moons are harboring active oceans in the coming decades.
Learning more about our solar system’s planets has always been a goal for astronomers. However, getting spacecraft to many of those planets isn’t always easy. That also doesn’t take into account the overall cost of such missions, either. The hope is that these suggestions that Uranus’ moons are hiding oceans could help spur the movement to create Uranus-focused exploration missions.
Further, if NASA and other agencies show enough interest in exploring Uranus and the possibility of these moon-based oceans, then we could see more priority put on Uranus-focused exploration in the near future.
The cold blast of an air conditioner can be a welcome relief as temperatures soar, but A/C units require large amounts of energy and can leak potent greenhouse gases. Today, scientists report an eco-friendly alternative—a plant-based film that gets cooler when exposed to sunlight and comes in a variety of textures and bright, iridescent colors. The material could someday keep buildings, cars and other structures cool without requiring external power.
The researchers will present their results at the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ACS Spring 2023 is a hybrid meeting being held virtually and in-person March 26–30 2023. "To make materials that remain cooler than the air around them during the day, you need something that reflects a lot of solar light and doesn't absorb it, which would transform energy from the light into heat," says Silvia Vignolini, Ph.D., the project's principal investigator. "There are only a few materials that have this property, and adding color pigments would typically undo their cooling effects," Vignolini adds.
Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is the ability of a surface to emit its own heat into space without it being absorbed by the air or atmosphere. The result is a surface that, without using any electrical power, can become several degrees colder than the air around it. When used on buildings or other structures, materials that promote this effect can help limit the use of air conditioning and other power-intensive cooling methods.
Some paints and films currently in development can achieve PDRC, but most of them are white or have a mirrored finish, says Qingchen Shen, Ph.D., who is presenting the work at the meeting. Both Vignolini and Shen are at Cambridge University (U.K.). But a building owner who wanted to use a blue-colored PDRC paint would be out of luck—colored pigments, by definition, absorb specific wavelengths of sunlight and only reflect the colors we see, causing undesirable warming effects in the process.
But there's a way to achieve color without the use of pigments. Soap bubbles, for example, show a prism of different colors on their surfaces. These colors result from the way light interacts with differing thicknesses of the bubble's film, a phenomenon called structural color. Part of Vignolini's research focuses on identifying the causes behind different types of structural colors in nature. In one case, her group found that cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which are derived from the cellulose found in plants, could be made into iridescent, colorful films without any added pigment.
As it turns out, cellulose is also one of the few naturally occurring materials that can promote PDRC. Vignolini learned this after hearing a talk from the first researchers to have created a cooling film material. "I thought wow, this is really amazing, and I never really thought cellulose could do this."
In recent work, Shen and Vignolini layered colorful CNC materials with a white-colored material made from ethyl cellulose, producing a colorful bi-layered PDRC film. They made films with vibrant blue, green and red colors that, when placed under sunlight, were an average of nearly 40 F cooler than the surrounding air. A square meter of the film generated over 120 Watts of cooling power, rivaling many types of residential air conditioners. The most challenging aspect of this research, Shen says, was finding a way to make the two layers stick together—on their own, the CNC films were brittle, and the ethyl cellulose layer had to be plasma-treated to get good adhesion. The result, however, was films that were robust and could be prepared several meters at a time in a standard manufacturing line.
New measurements by the James Webb Space Telescope found that a rocky exoplanet orbiting a star known as TRAPPIST-1 most likely has no atmosphere. The finding squashes hopes that this intriguing world might host life. But don't despair — there are six more Earth-like exoplanets in the TRAPPIST-1 star system, and now that Webb has proven its ability to study them, we can hope for some more exciting news in the not so distant future.
Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) to measure the temperature of the planet TRAPPIST-1b. Out of the seven planets that make up the TRAPPIST-1 star system, this planet orbits the closest to the parent star and is about 1.4 times as large as Earth.
The measurement, which according to the European Space Agency (ESA) represents Webb's first detection of "any form of light" emitted by a rocky exoplanet, revealed that the planet's daytime temperature was a scorching 446 degrees Fahrenheit (230 degrees Celsius). Astronomers think that's too high for the planet to have an atmosphere.
Thomas Greene, an astrophysicist in the Space Science and Astrobiology Division at NASA's Ames Research Center in California who led the observations, told Space.com in an email that he had hoped for a different result. "Some theory groups predicted that the planet would have a dense atmosphere, while others thought it might not," Greene said. "I was more disappointed than surprised to see it had no atmosphere."
The distance between TRAPPIST-1b and its star is only about one hundredth of the sun-Earth distance. That's 40 times closer than the distance between the sun and the solar system's innermost planet Mercury. Although the star at the center of the TRAPPIST-1 system is much dimmer than our sun, the planet still receives about four times as much starlight as Earth receives from the sun. Astronomers therefore didn't expect this planet to be habitable prior to ruling out the presence of an atmosphere. The observation, however, is still a breakthrough, as it shows that Webb can directly gather information about such distant Earth-like worlds.
In the TRAPPIST-1 system, there are at least three planets — TRAPPIST-1e, 1f and 1g — that have conditions for the existence of liquid water on their surfaces and therefore might host life. The TRAPPIST-1 system is a hugely popular target for exoplanet research and the best explored planetary system other than our own solar system, according to NASA. Located some 40 light-years away from the sun, the star at the center of the TRAPPIST-1 system is a so-called M dwarf. Sometimes also referred to as red dwarfs, these stars are the smallest known type of stars capable of burning hydrogen in their cores. They range in size from 0.08 to 0.6 times the size of the sun and are the most numerous type of star in our galaxy, the Milky Way.
"There are about ten times as many M stars like TRAPPIST-1 than G stars like the sun," Greene wrote. "M stars are also about twice as likely to have rocky, Earth-sized planets. Therefore about 95% of the Earth-sized rocky planets in the Milky Way will have stars like TRAPPIST-1 and not like the sun."

Climate change is shifting the ranges of many disease-carrying species like ticks and mosquitoes. Scientists warn that the U.S. is underprepared for a potentially devastating surge in infections. In the summer and fall of 2021, West Nile virus spread rapidly through Arizona’s Maricopa County and other areas of the state. The outbreak, with more than 1,700 cases reported and 127 deaths. was the largest in the United States since the mosquito-borne virus first emerged in this country in 1999. But with the nation facing a far larger public health crisis with the Covid-19 pandemic, it went almost unnoticed. Even before Covid-19 arrived, the public health response to diseases transmitted to humans by vectors like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes — including West Nile, Zika, dengue fever, Lyme disease, and others — was muted, perhaps because the number of reported cases has been relatively low, and the public largely unaware of the health risks such diseases pose. With climate change accelerating, however, shifting the ranges of many disease-carrying species and sharply increasing infections, scientists and others warn that the nation’s public officials, as well as hospitals and doctors, are underprepared for a potentially devastating surge in infections. Research on vector-borne diseases and disease surveillance, they note, are underfunded by federal and local governments, leaving the country vulnerable to outbreaks.
“Without sustained funding in local vector control and surveillance, it ends up stymieing that response of looking for the threats before they become really huge causes for concern for local public health,” said Chelsea Gridley-Smith, director of environmental health for the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). In the United States, cases of 17 different vector-borne diseases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nine pathogens new to the country have been identified since 2004, according to a 2020 report by the agency, which noted that the data for 2019 and 2020 might be incomplete due to underreporting during the Covid-19 pandemic. Reported cases of vector-borne diseases more than doubled from 2004-2019, to more than 800,000 cases. But those figures are almost certainly an undercount, CDC officials said in a presentation to Congress last year. Only 2% to 3% of West Nile cases and about 10% of Lyme disease cases are reported, said Lyle Petersen, the director of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases in Fort Collins, Colo. Overall, cases of vector-borne diseases are probably underreported by 10-fold to 80-fold, according to Benjamin Beard, the CDC division’s deputy director.
Petersen noted that addressing vector-borne disease involves formidable challenges, including a lack of vaccines for diseases found in the continental United States; the difficulty in diagnosing some diseases in their early stages; and the sheer number of emerging pathogens. Tick-borne diseases comprise the largest share of vector-borne diseases by far — over 80% of reported cases are caused by ticks. Longer summers, rising temperatures, and the expanding ranges of tick species such as Ixodes scapularis, the black-legged tick, and Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick, are leading to an increased chance of human exposure to pathogens over a larger geographic area. The range of Ixodes scapularis, a tick that transmits Lyme and other diseases, expanded greatly over two decades, with the number of counties with established populations more than doubling from 1996 to 2015.
Similarly, milder year-round temperatures mean that some mosquitoes may overwinter or emerge earlier in the spring. In the case of West Nile, this affects not just the mosquitoes carrying the virus but the virus itself, which replicates faster in warm temperatures. “So the mosquitoes actually are more infectious to people when they bite them,” Beard said. Nelson Nicolasora, medical director for the infectious disease program at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, said that while the 2021 West Nile virus outbreak was “nothing like” the Covid-19 pandemic, the illness was “life-changing” for people who suffered debilitating neurological disease. West Nile usually causes mild, flu-like symptoms, but about 1 in 150 people who are infected will develop severe neuroinvasive disease. “It can be devastating,” Nicolasora said. Two of his patients died during the 2021 outbreak, he said, and others faced serious short-term and longer-term effects: Some required a ventilator to breathe, or rehabilitation to regain the ability to walk. Irene Ruberto, vector-borne and zoonotic disease program manager at the Arizona Department of Health Services, said that even though public health officials in the state were aware of the cyclical nature of West Nile virus infections from year to year, they had no idea the infection rate would be so high in 2021. It’s difficult to predict how many infections will occur in a given year, Ruberto said, because many factors are involved, including mosquito density, local environments, and the climate.
“We do know that birds play a role,” acting as an amplifying host for the virus, Ruberto said, which adds complexity to understanding virus transmission. While West Nile is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, mosquitoes get the virus through biting an infected wild bird. And different species of birds vary in their ability to transmit the virus once they’re infected. Ruberto said the state health department in Arizona doesn’t on its own have the funding or the capacity to analyze the 2021 outbreak to understand the factors that drove it. When matter falls into supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies, it unleashes enormous amounts of energy and is called an active galactic nuclei (or AGN). A fraction of AGN release part of this energy as jets that are detectable in radio wavelengths that travel at velocities close to light speed. While the jet travels across the galaxy, it collides with the clouds and gas around it and in some cases may push this material away in the form of winds. However, which conditions preferentially trigger these winds to blow out the gas from galaxies are still poorly understood.
The effect of jets impacting the content of the galaxies, like the stars, dust, and gas, plays an important role in how galaxies evolve in the Universe. The most powerful radio jets, hosted in ´radio-loud’ galaxies, are responsible for drastically changing the fate of galaxies because they heat the gas, preventing new star formation and galaxy growth. Computer simulations of relativistic jets piercing into disky galaxies predict that jets alter the shape of the surrounding gas by blowing bubbles as they penetrate further into the galaxy. One of the key elements in the simulations that make the jets efficient in driving winds is the angle between the gaseous disk and the jet’s direction of propagation. Surprisingly, less powerful jets, like the ones in ‘radio-quiet’ galaxies, are able to inflict more damage on the surrounding medium than the very powerful ones.
An international scientific team, led by the IAC researcher Anelise Audibert, discovered an ideal case in which to study the interaction of the radio jet with the cold gas around a massive quasar: the Teacup galaxy. The Teacup is a radio-quiet quasar located 1.3 billion light years from us and its nickname comes from the expanding bubbles seen in the optical and radio images, one of which is shaped like the handle of a teacup.. In addition, the central region (around 3300 light-years in size) harbors a compact and young radio jet that has a small inclination relative to the galaxy disk.
Effects on star formation
Using observations performed in the Chilean desert with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the team was able to characterize with an unprecedented level of detail the cold, dense gas in the central part of the Teacup. In particular, they detected the emission of carbon monoxide molecules that can only exist under certain conditions of density and temperature. Based on these observations, the team found that the compact jet, despite its low power, is not only clearly disrupting the distribution of the gas and heating it, but also accelerating it in an unusual way.
The team expected to detect extreme conditions in the impacted regions along the jet, but when they analyzed the observations, they found that the cold gas is more turbulent and warmer in the directions perpendicular to the jet propagation. “This is caused by the shocks induced by the jet-driven bubble, which heats up and blows the gas in its lateral expansion”, explains A. Audibert.
“Supported by the comparison with computer simulations, we believe that the orientation between the cold gas disk and the jet is a crucial factor in efficiently driving these lateral winds”, she adds.
“It was previously believed that low-power jets had a negligible impact on the galaxy, but works like ours show that, even in the case of radio-quiet galaxies, jets can redistribute and disrupt the surrounding gas, and this will have an impact on the galaxy's ability to form new stars”, says Cristina Ramos Almeida, an IAC researcher and co-author of the study.
The next step is to observe a larger sample of radio-quiet quasars with MEGARA, an instrument installed on the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC or Grantecan). The observations will help us to understand the impact of the jets on the more tenuous and hot gas, and to measure changes in star formation caused by winds. This is one of the goals of the QSOFEED project, developed by an international team led by C. Ramos Almeida at the IAC, whose aim is to discover how winds from supermassive black holes affect the galaxies that host them.
When the immense Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico collapsed in 2020, it left gaping holes in astronomy. Now, a team from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) hopes to address some of the gaps with a very different instrument: a tightly packed array of relatively inexpensive radio dishes that aims to quickly image radio sources across wide swaths of the sky. A nearly completed prototype array in California that the team calls a “radio camera” is already locating dozens of the distant, enigmatic eruptions called fast radio bursts (FRBs). Next year, the team hopes to begin construction on a much larger array with 2000 dishes that, together, will match the size of Arecibo.
Maura McLaughlin of West Virginia University is a leader of NANOGrav (the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves), an effort to search for gravitational waves from supermassive black holes that relied on Arecibo for half its data. She says they took “a big sensitivity hit” when it was lost. “We really need a new telescope with a similar collecting area,” she says, and Caltech’s planned Deep Synoptic Array (DSA) fits that bill. “It will be a game changer.”
To gain sensitivity, radio astronomers can build big dishes like Arecibo or arrays of smaller dishes. But in most such arrays, the dishes are widely spaced, which sharpens their resolution but creates “a data deluge problem,” says Caltech’s Gregg Hallinan, DSA principal investigator (PI). Producing an image from a scattered array is like looking through a fragmented mirror, he says, and recreating the information from the missing parts is a complex nonlinear process known as deconvolution that can take weeks—or even years.
Many astronomers just want to regularly survey the sky for new objects or monitor sources for subtle changes without a heavy processing burden. Caltech’s solution, Hallinan says, is to “fill the mirror up” by packing low-cost dishes together. That makes deconvolution easier and should enable DSA to construct images in real time. The team has nearly finished assembling its prototype, the DSA-110, a T-shaped array of 95 dishes spaced 1 meter apart at Caltech’s Owens Valley Radio Observatory in California plus another 15 “outriggers” spread out more than a kilometer distant. To keep construction costs to $4 million, the instrument uses commercially available 4.6-meter dishes, homemade amplifiers, and wave-channeling feeds fashioned out of cake tins. Most radio telescopes require expensive cryogenic cooling to reduce amplifier noise, but Caltech’s engineers have squeezed similar performance out of room-temperature circuits. Co-PI Vikram Ravi admits they perform less well in the summer heat.
With a wide field of view, DSA-110 is good at detecting FRBs, intense blasts of radio waves lasting only milliseconds, coming from all over the sky. Several thousand have been detected, but little more than a dozen have been traced to their home galaxies, which might hold clues to what is powering the bursts. DSA-110 aims to localize many more. If a burst is detected, data from the outrigger dishes allow the telescope to zoom in and pin the FRB to its galaxy.
Forget the collapse of employment, forget the spam and misinformation, forget human obsolescence and the upending of society. Some believe AI is flat-out going to wipe out all of biological life at its earliest opportunity.
This is not the first time humanity has stared down the possibility of extinction due to its technological creations. But the threat of AI is very different from the nuclear weapons we've learned to live with. Nukes can't think. They can't lie, deceive or manipulate. They can't plan and execute. Somebody has to push the big red button. The shocking emergence of general-purpose AI, even at the slow, buggy level of GPT-4, has forced the genuine risk of extermination back into the conversation.
Let's be clear from the outset: if we agree that artificial superintelligence has a chance of wiping out all life on Earth, there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it anyway. It's not just that we don't know how to stop something smarter than us. We can't even, as a species, stop ourselves from racing to create it. Who's going to make the laws? The US Congress? The United Nations? This is a global issue. Desperate open letters from industry leaders asking for a six-month pause to figure out where we're at may be about the best we can do.
The incentives you'd be working against are enormous. First off, it's an arms race; if America doesn't build it, China will, and whoever gets there first might rule the world. But there's also economics; the smarter and more capable an AI you develop, the bigger a money printing machine you've got. "They spit out gold, until they get large enough and ignite the atmosphere and kill everybody," said AI researcher and philosopher Eliezer Yudkowsky earlier today to Lex Fridman.
Yudkowsky has long been one of the leading voices in the "AI will kill us all" camp. And the people leading the race to superintelligence no longer think he's a crank. "I think that there's some chance of that," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, again to Fridman. "And it's really important to acknowledge it. Because if we don't talk about it, if we don't treat it as potentially real, we won't put enough effort into solving it."
Why would a superintelligent AI kill us all?
Are these machines not designed and trained to serve and respect us? Sure they are. But nobody sat down and wrote the code for GPT-4; it simply wouldn't be possible. OpenAI instead created a neural learning structure inspired by the way the human brain connects concepts. It worked with Microsoft Azure to build the hardware to run it, then fed it billions and billions of bits of human text and let GPT effectively program itself.
The resulting code doesn't look like anything a programmer would write. It's mainly a colossal matrix of decimal numbers, each representing the weight, or importance, of a particular connection between two "tokens." Tokens, as used in GPT, don't represent anything as useful as concepts, or even whole words. They're little strings of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and/or other characters.
No human alive can look at these matrices and make any sense out of them. The top minds at OpenAI have no idea what a given number in GPT-4's matrix means, or how to go into those tables and find the concept of xenocide, let alone tell GPT that it's naughty to kill people. You can't type in Asimov's three laws of robotics, and hard-code them in like Robocop's prime directives. The best you can do is ask nicely.
“Whole genome doubling (WGD)”, a process where an entire set of chromosomes within a cell is duplicated, occurs in approximately 30% of all human cancers. This event causes genomic instability within the cell, potentially leading to chromosomal changes and other mutations that contribute to cancer development.
Now, a team of researchers led by Elisa Oricchio at EPFL and Giovanni Ciriello at UNIL, has uncovered a new clue as to how WGD drives cancer. In a study published in Nature, the scientists show that WGD can affect the 3D organization of the chromatin inside the cell through a phenomenon called “loss of chromatin segregation”.
The researchers looked at cells that lack the tumor suppressor gene p53, making them prone to WGD. They found that WGD leads to a reduction in the segregation of chromatin’s structural elements, such as loops, domains, and compartments, upending its careful organization in the cell.
The result is a mixing of genetic material that is normally kept separate, changing the position of genomic regions in the 3D space, known as “sub-compartment repositioning.” This sets the stage for the activation of oncogenes, which are genes that contribute to the development of cancer.
The researchers also found that the effects of WGD on chromatin organization are largely independent of chromosomal alterations, meaning that loss of chromatin segregation and chromosomal instability are complementary mechanisms that work together to promote cancer development.
The work provides a new way of looking at the role of WGD and chromatin organization in the development of cancer. In the future, highly multiplexed single-cell molecular profiles, combined with barcoding technologies and new computational approaches, could help to further uncover what role disorganization of chromatin’s 3D structure plays in transforming a cell into a cancerous one.

The results push the boundary of “quantumness” in near-macroscopic objects, and further refinements could allow these resonators to surpass quantum tests with matter interferometers.
To probe the quantum-to-classical transition, physicists study the size limits of systems where superposition is observed. The traditional test bed is an interferometer in which an object “split” into two separate paths produces an interference signal. The current record for matter interferometry is a molecule with 2000 atoms [2].
An alternative way to observe superposition is with an acoustic resonator, which can be in two vibrational states at the same time. Matteo Fadel from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and his colleagues studied the behavior of a sapphire-crystal resonator that was driven by a superconducting qubit to vibrate in two separate modes. “Observing this superposition, and the rate at which it vanishes, allows us to test the validity of quantum mechanics in our system,” Fadel says.
Although the resonator has many more atoms than interferometry test objects, the vibrational states are separated by a relatively small (subatomic) distance. In terms of macroscopicity—a logarithmic scale used to evaluate quantum tests (see Synopsis: Quantum-ness Put on the Scale)—the researchers’ resonator goes to 11, whereas matter interferometers can reach as high as 14. To improve resonator tests, Fadel and his colleagues propose several changes, including making resonators that vibrate more coherently and at lower frequencies.

A decade after a landmark report on Americans' shorter lives, the problem has only gotten worse. Unlike other wealthy nations, U.S. life expectancy has not bounced back from the pandemic. Just before Christmas, federal health officials confirmed life expectancy in America had dropped for a nearly unprecedented second year in a row – down to 76 years. While countries all over the world saw life expectancy rebound during the second year of the pandemic after the arrival of vaccines, the U.S. did not. Then, last week, more bad news: Maternal mortality in the U.S. reached a high in 2021. Also, a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association found rising mortality rates among U.S. children and adolescents. "This is the first time in my career that I've ever seen [an increase in pediatric mortality] – it's always been declining in the United States for as long as I can remember," says the JAMA paper's lead author Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. "Now, it's increasing at a magnitude that has not occurred at least for half a century." Across the lifespan, and across every demographic group, Americans die at younger ages than their counterparts in other wealthy nations. How could this happen? In a country that prides itself on scientific excellence and innovation, and spends an incredible amount of money on health care, the population keeps dying at younger and younger ages.
An unheard alarm
One group of people are not surprised at all: Woolf and the other researchers involved in a landmark, 400-page study ten years ago with a name that says it all: "Shorter Lives, Poorer Health." The research by a panel convened by the National Academy of Sciences and funded by the National Institutes of Health compared U.S. health and death with other developed countries. The results showed – convincingly – that the U.S. was stalling on health advances in the population while other countries raced ahead. The authors tried to sound an alarm, but found few in the public or government or private sectors were willing to listen. In the years since, the trends have worsened. American life expectancy is lower than that of Cuba, Lebanon, and Czechia.
Ten years later, here's a look back at what that eye-popping study found, and why the researchers involved believe it's not too late to turn the trends around.
Beyond bad habits
Americans are used to hearing about how their poor diets and sedentary lifestyles make their health bad. It can seem easy to brush that off as another scold about eating more vegetables and getting more exercise. But the picture painted in the "Shorter Lives" report could shock even those who feel like they know the story. "American children are less likely to live to age 5 than children in other high-income countries," the authors write on the second page. It goes on: "Even Americans with healthy behaviors, for example, those who are not obese or do not smoke, appear to have higher disease rates than their peers in other countries." The researchers catalog what they call the "U.S. health disadvantage" – the fact that living in America is worse for your health and makes you more likely to die younger than if you lived in another rich country like the U.K., Switzerland or Japan. "We went into this with an open mind as to why it is that the U.S. had a shorter life expectancy than people in other countries," says Woolf, who chaired the committee that produced the report. After looking across different age and racial and economic and geographic groups, he says, "what we found was that this problem existed in almost every category we looked at." That's why, says Eileen Crimmins, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California who was also on the panel that produced the report, they made a deliberate choice to focus on the health of the U.S. population as a whole. "That was a decision – not to emphasize the differences in our population, because there is data that actually shows that even the top proportion of the U.S. population does worse than the top proportion of other populations," she explains. "We were trying to just say – look, this is an American problem."
Digging into the 'why'
The researchers were charged with documenting how Americans have more diseases and die younger and to explore the reasons why. "We were very systematic and thorough about how we thought about this," says Woolf. The panel looked at American life and death in terms of the public health and medical care system, individual behaviors like diet and tobacco use, social factors like poverty and inequality, the physical environment, and public policies and values. "In every one of those five buckets, we found problems that distinguish the United States from other countries." Yes, Americans eat more calories and lack universal access to health care. But there's also higher child poverty, racial segregation, social isolation, and more. Even the way cities are designed makes access to good food more difficult. "Everybody has a pet thing they worry about and say, 'it's oral health' or 'it's suicides' – everyone has something that they're legitimately interested in and want to see more attention to," says John Haaga, who was the director of the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the National Institute on Aging at NIH, before he retired. "The great value of an exercise like this one was to step back and say, 'OK, all of these things are going on, but which of them best account for these long-term population level trends that we're seeing?' " The answer is varied. A big part of the difference between life and death in the U.S. and its peer countries is people dying or being killed before age 50. The "Shorter Lives" report specifically points to factors like teen pregnancy, drug overdoses, HIV, fatal car crashes, injuries, and violence.
"Two years difference in life expectancy probably comes from the fact that firearms are so available in the United States," Crimmins says. "There's the opioid epidemic, which is clearly ours – that was our drug companies and other countries didn't have that because those drugs were more controlled. Some of the difference comes from the fact that we are more likely to drive more miles. We have more cars," and ultimately, more fatal crashes. "When we were doing it, we were joking we should call it 'Live free and die,' based on the New Hampshire slogan, ['Live free or die']," Crimmins says. "The National Academy of Sciences said, 'That's outrageous, that's too provocative.' " There are some things Americans get right, according to the "Shorter Lives" report: "The United States has higher survival after age 75 than do peer countries, and it has higher rates of cancer screening and survival, better control of blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lower stroke mortality, lower rates of current smoking, and higher average household income." But those achievements, it's clear, aren't enough to offset the other problems that befall many Americans at younger ages. All of this costs the country tremendously. Not only do families lose loved ones too soon, but having a sicker population costs the country as much as $100 billion every year in extra health care costs. "Behind the statistics detailed in this report are the faces of young people – infants, children, and adolescents – who are unwell and dying early because conditions in this country are not as favorable as those in other countries," the paper's authors wrote....

Black holes exist in our universe. That’s widely accepted today. Physicists have detected the X-rays emitted when black holes feed, analyzed the gravitational waves from black hole collisions and even imaged two of these behemoths. But mathematician Elena Giorgi of Columbia University studies black holes in a different way.
“Black holes are mathematical solutions to the Einstein equation,” Giorgi says — the “master equation” that is the basis of the general theory of relativity. She and other mathematicians seek to prove theorems about these solutions and otherwise probe the math of general relativity. Their goal: unlock unsuspected truths about black holes or verify existing suspicions.
Within general relativity, “one can understand clean mathematical statements and study those statements, and they can give an unambiguous answer within that theory,” says Christoph Kehle, a mathematician at ETH Zurich’s Institute for Theoretical Studies.
Mathematicians can solve equations that have bearing on questions about the nature of black holes’ formation, evolution and stability. Last year, in a paper posted online at arXiv.org, Giorgi and colleagues settled a long-standing mathematical question about black hole stability. A stable black hole, mathematically speaking, is one that if poked, nudged or otherwise disturbed will eventually settle back into being a black hole. Like a rubber band that has been stretched and then released, the black hole doesn’t rip apart, explode or cease to exist, but returns to something like its former self.
Black holes seem to be physically stable — otherwise they couldn’t endure in the universe — but proving it mathematically is a different beast. And a necessary feat, Giorgi says. If black holes are stable, as researchers presume, then the math describing them had better reflect that stability. If not, something is wrong with the underlying theory. “Most of my work,” Giorgi says, “is about proving things that we already expected to be true.”

This is something the study’s authors were able to achieve thanks to stimulated emission. This process was initially described by Albert Einstein in 1916 and also served as the basis of the lasers that we use today. Normally, stimulated emission requires an insane amount of photons to work. However, this research shows that you can do it with small groups of photons and even single photons. But we haven’t unlocked unrestricted manipulation of quantum light just yet. The scientists involved in the study say that we’ll need to apply the same principles to develop more efficient devices that can apply these photon-bound states needed to manipulate quantum light.
One of the author’s next steps is to see if they can use this same experiment to create additional states of light that prove more fault-tolerant within quantum computing.

In just a few hours of observations, the space telescope revealed a dynamic atmosphere on a planet 40 light-years from Earth.
Researchers observing with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have pinpointed silicate cloud features in a distant planet’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is constantly rising, mixing, and moving during its 22-hour day, bringing hotter material up and pushing colder material down. The resulting brightness changes are so dramatic that it is the most variable planetary-mass object known to date. The team, led by Brittany Miles of the University of Arizona, also made extraordinarily clear detections of water, methane, and carbon monoxide with Webb’s data, and found evidence of carbon dioxide. This is the largest number of molecules ever identified all at once on a planet outside our solar system.
Cataloged as VHS 1256 b, the planet is about 40 light-years away and orbits not one, but two stars over a 10,000-year period. “VHS 1256 b is about four times farther from its stars than Pluto is from our Sun, which makes it a great target for Webb,” Miles said. “That means the planet’s light is not mixed with light from its stars.” Higher up in its atmosphere, where the silicate clouds are churning, temperatures reach a scorching 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit (830 degrees Celsius).
Instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope known as spectrographs, one on its Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and another on its Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), observed planet VHS 1256 b. The resulting spectrum shows signatures of silicate clouds, water, methane, and carbon monoxide.
Within those clouds, Webb detected both larger and smaller silicate dust grains, which are shown on a spectrum. “The finer silicate grains in its atmosphere may be more like tiny particles in smoke,” noted co-author Beth Biller of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. “The larger grains might be more like very hot, very small sand particles.”
VHS 1256 b has low gravity compared to more massive brown dwarfs, which means that its silicate clouds can appear and remain higher in its atmosphere where Webb can detect them. Another reason its skies are so turbulent is the planet’s age. In astronomical terms, it’s quite young. Only 150 million years have passed since it formed – and it will continue to change and cool over billions of years.
In many ways, the team considers these findings to be the first “coins” pulled out of a spectrum that researchers view as a treasure chest of data. They’ve only begun identifying its contents. “We’ve identified silicates, but better understanding which grain sizes and shapes match specific types of clouds is going to take a lot of additional work,” Miles said. “This is not the final word on this planet – it is the beginning of a large-scale modeling effort to fit Webb’s complex data.”
Although all of the features the team observed have been spotted on other planets elsewhere in the Milky Way by other telescopes, other research teams typically identified only one at a time. “No other telescope has identified so many features at once for a single target,” said co-author Andrew Skemer of the University of California, Santa Cruz. “We’re seeing a lot of molecules in a single spectrum from Webb that detail the planet’s dynamic cloud and weather systems.”
The team came to these conclusions by analyzing data known as spectra gathered by two instruments aboard Webb, the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). Since the planet orbits at such a great distance from its stars, the researchers were able to observe it directly, rather than using the transit technique or a coronagraph to take this data.
There will be plenty more to learn about VHS 1256 b in the months and years to come as this team – and others – continue to sift through Webb’s high-resolution infrared data. “There’s a huge return on a very modest amount of telescope time,” Biller added. “With only a few hours of observations, we have what feels like unending potential for additional discoveries.”
What might become of this planet billions of years from now? Since it’s so far from its stars, it will become colder over time, and its skies may transition from cloudy to clear. The researchers observed VHS 1256 b as part of Webb’s Early Release Science program, which is designed to help transform the astronomical community’s ability to characterize planets and the disks where they form.
The team’s paper, entitled “The JWST Early Release Science Program for Direct Observations of Exoplanetary Systems II: A 1 to 20 Micron Spectrum of the Planetary-Mass Companion VHS 1256-1257 b,” will be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on March 22, 2023.

An international team led by Lancaster University has discovered how electrons can slither rapidly to-and-fro across a quantum surface when driven by external forces.
The research, published in Physical Review B, has enabled the visualization of the motion of electrons on liquid helium for the first time. The experiments, carried out in Riken, Japan, by Kostyantyn Nasyedkin (now at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S.) in the lab of Kimitoshi Kono (now in Taiwan at Yang Ming Chiao Tung University) detected unusual oscillations whose frequencies varied in time. Although it was unclear how the electrons were moving in the darkness and extreme cold at the bottom of the cryostat, it was evident that the time-variations were much like those seen in living systems.
Prof. Kono said, "At very low temperatures, the surface of liquid helium is an exceptionally slippery place. Interesting things happen there, and it is important because of the potential for quantum computing using electrons on the helium surface. Such electrons move very easily because, with a slippery surface below and a vacuum above, there is nothing to slow them down."
The Riken data were analyzed at Lancaster University using methods developed by Prof. Aneta Stefanovska and her group, mainly for biological applications. Lancaster Ph.D. student Hala Siddiq (now at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia) applied these methods. She and her principal supervisor Prof. Stefanovska interpreted the results in collaboration with Riken's team and Lancaster experts in low temperature physics, Dmitry Zmeev, Yuri Pashkin and Peter McClintock.
The work has enabled the electrons' motion to be visualized, showing how they slide around in part-circular and part-radial patterns of motion in the vacuum above the liquid surface. An additional complication revealed by Siddiq's analysis is that the surface itself is moving gently in up-and-down vertical motion. Moreover, her results indicate a combination of quantum and classical dynamics.
Prof. Stefanovska said, "Appreciation of these features will be important for practical applications across wide areas of physics, life sciences, and even sociology. Namely, they provide a paradigmatic example for the physics of non-isolated systems and for the mathematics of non-autonomous systems. Moreover, the experimental model can be used to study properties of living systems, and similar technical or societal systems, in a very controlled way."
