"UK courts recently banned people using the glasses inside their buildings and a number of restaurants and theatres have done the same. Ramsey is concerned more places might ban them which could negatively affect visually impaired people using them."

"Peter Drucker argued that the purpose of a corporation is to serve the customer. It turns out that organizations that focus on this do well.
Milton Friedman argued (mistakenly, in my view) that the corporation doesn’t need to care about customers, unless this helps increase the value of the company to shareholders.
Corporations are a cultural fiction, something we created and permit to exist because it serves the community. In exchange for leverage and insulation, the corporations are expected to be of use and to improve conditions for those they serve–not to be a tool to enrich a few shareholders.
As power becomes more concentrated and money becomes more leveraged, it’s easy to see how attractive it is to sell Friedman’s idea to people seeking a short-term profit.

Educators can confront AI head on by distinguishing its pattern-recognition skills from its inability to daydream, embody other people and authentically express itself.
It’s disconcerting to envision human thought becoming redundant or deemed inferior due to advancements in artificial intelligence.
But for all its ills, AI cannot be ignored or wished away. It’s here to stay, and I want my students to understand the stakes of becoming too reliant on this technology.
I can’t blame them for wondering why they should dedicate so much time and effort to honing their writing and critical thinking skills if large language models appear to do a passable job.
