Changing tides: Learning and training in the Metaverse

Changing tides: Learning and training in the Metaverse | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

VR platforms like Virbela demonstrate how it is architecturally possible to move beyond the physical domain of a classroom or corporate-training hall to a hyperreal space of learning. While one may argue that Zoom, YouTube and other platforms already provide learning opportunities that are not restricted to physical buildings, the metaverse dives a little deeper by focusing on spatial immersion.

A conversation on Imagining Alternative Futures: can commoning help fashion?

A panel discussion with David Bollier, Ana María Durán Calisto, and Dave from One Army; moderated by Bel Jacobs.

Why fashion and the commons?

A commons arises when a community treats a resource as a shared wealth. There's no commons without commoning: a process of community participation. It's a thriving alternative to capitalism that puts human wellbeing and the planet above profit. So we, Fashion Act Now, feel its important to ask, is the commons the answer when it comes to degrowing fashion, an industry rampant with overconsumption? For this talk, we bring together three people who work outside of the fashion industry but for which we feel the fashion industry has much to learn from.

On the 26th April, we had the pleasure of bringing together leading thinkers and doers in their fields:

David Bollier, author, activist and consultant who has spent 20 years exploring the commons, writting countless books and co-organizing pioneering international conferences and strategy workshops. He's the author of Think Like a Commoner: A Short Introduction to the Commons. He's the co-founder of the Commons Strategies Group and Director of the Reinventing the Commons Program at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. His most recent book is The Commoner's Catalog for Changemaking.

Ana María Durán Calisto, Ecuadorian architect, urbanist, educator and writer, who founded Estudio A0 with her partner in Quito, Ecuador and challenges the status quo and the spatial and environmental paradigm for urbanization in South American cities, developing environmentally responsible design and construction systems. Her expertise is in urbanisation in the Amazon Basin.

Dave from One Army, dutch industrial designer and founder of a community that creates projects that tackle global problems. One Army are "a global movement of peaceful sapiens dedicating their lives to serve and protect planet earth" and are the creators of Fixing Fashion, Precious Plastics and more. We think Fixing Fashion is a wonderful example of the commons providing answers for the fashion and growth conundrum.

This conversation will be moderated by Bel Jacobs, writer, speaker and campaigner on the climate emergency, animal rights and alternative fashion systems. She's the co-founder Fashion Act Now and founder of Fashion in Schools. She's campaigned for Extinction Rebellion and Animal Rebellion and is a former Style Editor for Metro.

Teaching for Creativity: Myths | H-IQ Newsletter

Teaching for Creativity: Myths | H-IQ Newsletter | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Does Your Right Brain Know What Your Left Brain is Doing?

It’s time to bury some myths about creativity.

The notion that the right brain is the source of creativity has become a popular myth extracted from research published in 1969.  However, the researchers did not find a brain split for creativity.  In fact, they identified both hemispheres as essential for creativity.

Yet, 53 years later, many still accept the “right brain” myth as truth.  Human beings love to make complexity seem simple and to make the simple needlessly complex.  So, the right-brain myth survives because it’s a simple explanation for a complex and mysterious process.  We don’t understand how human beings generate ideas.

Metaverse-as-a-service will be the basis of the next internet era of Web3

Metaverse-as-a-service will be the basis of the next internet era of Web3 | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The concept of the Metaverse has been around since the 1980s, but it has only been in recent years that we’ve seen hundreds of projects popping up on the scene. What we are currently experiencing are gamified worlds with limited integration and engagement abilities. Right now, the Metaverse is still a blank canvas for early adopters to test and entertain the concept. When looking at the future of engagement in the Metaverse and bridging the gaps between the physical and digital worlds, however, we need to push the boundaries and go beyond what is currently seen as a metaverse. Let us begin looking at leaders who have begun building the next internet, which promises to be powerful for commerce, engagement and entertainment.

What does an acid trip typically feel like? Each person’s experience with acid will be different. Indeed, each trip may be different. One might be very light, but others can take a frightening and overwhelming turn. Symptoms may begin to show 20 to 90 minutesTrusted Source after taking a dose. The main episode can last several hours. Acid is a long-acting drug. It stays in the body 6 to 15 hoursTrusted Source. Most acid trips won’t last more than 9 hours. The trip During this period of “tripping” or active effects, you may begin to experience sensationalized perceptions of what’s happening around you. This can include “seeing” color or “tasting” sounds. Stationary items, like furniture, may begin to “move” or swell or shrink before your eyes. Coming down Coming down from the trip will feel like you’re gradually returning to Earth. Signs may begin to lessen in intensity. You may feel tired after getting through the hours-long trip and want to sleep. Afterglow An “afterglow” is possible for several hours after the end of the trip, too. This may feel like everything is “lighter” or “brighter” than before the trip. You may also have moments of flashbacks for several hours, even days, after the acid trip is over. Microdosing A microdose is a small dose of a psychedelic drug like LSD, often one-tenth of a normal dose. It’s sometimes used to help treat symptoms of anxiety and depression, but it’s not meant to completely encompass your day. However, little is known about the long-term effects of this practice. Reimagining Education to transform society and the workplace

Reimagining Education to transform society and the workplace | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

As we enter into 4th Industrial Revolution, as described by World Economic Forum founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab, governments must take the lead in changing the way that we see the future of society and the workplace. Companies and institutions will also play a significant role as the employment landscape changes from the one we have grown accustomed to.

The path forward requires certain priorities: first and foremost, to ensure that a fundamental review of the educational system is urgently addressed. Furthermore, technology must be galvanized within the workplace in a way that benefits employees. Employees will need to be shown that Intelligent Automation (IA) implementation creates opportunities and benefits for them personally. Additionally, when IA does affect a job or department, the roles of the affected workers need to be assessed and expanded, which may require further training of those personnel.

Schools of the future: Defining new models of Education for the 4th Industrial Revolution - World Economic Forum

Schools of the future: Defining new models of Education for the 4th Industrial Revolution - World Economic Forum | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Launched officially in January 2020, the Education 4.0 Framework proposes eight transformations within learning content and delivery mechanisms in primary and secondary education systems to better prepare the next generation of talent for the future of work and the future of societies. The Framework, codified in Schools of the Future: Defining New Models of Education for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also showcases examples of schools, school systems and education programmes that are pioneering the way toward Education 4.0 skills and learning experiences.

Over the first half of 2020, the workstream developed the Closing the Education Gap playbook—a guide for governments and businesses to set up country-level public-private collaborations to implement the Education 4.0 framework via four key system interventions: teacher empowerment, new skills measurement mechanisms, new education standards, and mainstreaming technology-enhanced education. The workstream is currently exploring the full integration of this work into the Reskilling Revolution’s Country Accelerators. As of August 2020, using a data-driven approach, a list of 15 potential target countries was selected for the implementation of a future Closing the Education Gap country accelerator model.

A high-level “Education 4.0 Coalition”—a community of champions in primary and secondary education that includes heads of international organizations, EdTech leaders, experts, education finance leaders and policymakers—was convened in July 2020. The Community strongly supported the implementation of country-level Closing the Education Gap Accelerators. There was also consensus for the community to be convened on a regular basis to align on the post-COVID-19 recovery in education.
