We talk a lot about student engagement in education. Most educators got into this profession for the students, and, as a result, we want their experience to be as engaging and positive as possible. There is far less written about teacher engagement, even though teacher engagement and student engagement are reciprocal. When teacher engagement dips, it has a negative effect on student engagement. When teacher engagement is high, it positively impacts both student engagement and achievement.

Josh Davis spent 14 years teaching high school special education and middle school history, so he’s well aware of a few classroom constants. He understands how students with learning difficulties can feel separated from the rest of their classmates, how issues at home sometimes manifest as classroom misbehavior, and that being singled out—for both positive and negative reasons—is panic-inducing for just about all students.
However, Davis discovered new constants when he moved out of the classroom and into his current role as instructional technology coach at Downey Unified School District in California. Over and over, he saw teachers resisting technology adoption because they didn’t want to look foolish trying something new in front of students.

With the coronavirus pandemic sweeping across the globe and emptying the dorms to send students home for online education, there is a pressing need for the students to be more cybersecurity conscious. There are many things you need to do to secure the system before the virtual class can begin, including using a VPN.

Padlet is an online bulletin board that teachers and students can use to collaborate, curate, and share digital content. The way Padlet works is simple and easy: users create padlets and add posts to them; others interact with publicly shared posts(e.g, through comments and reactions) or contribute by adding more resources. Posts can contain various types of digital content such as text, videos, audio recording, screencasts, web links, graphs, images, GIFs, and many more.

Racist/racialized malinformation is the phenomenon of how we are conditioned, socialized, and repeatedly bombarded with racist and negative images and stereotypes. These stereotypes are repeated and normalized until they become malinformation. But how can these deleterious and destructive forces be eliminated? They need to be addressed and battled just as other societal ailments are, and critical cultural literacy can aid in this fight.

Jean Baudrillard (1929 - 2007), the postmodernist French philosopher and cultural theorist, examined the ways in which see and interact with the world as simulcra and simulations and hyperreality. Neo, in the film The Matrix (1999), carries a copy of Baudrillard's Simulcra and Simulations (1981), which examines technology, or more accurately its virtual outputs, in culture. More than this, he has created several concepts and theories that redefine what technology is in our lives and culture, way beyond face-to-face and print media.

ClassPoint is a new-to-me PowerPoint tool that I’m excited to see used in online and in-person classroom and conference settings. At first glance you might think it’s just a poll and quiz tool. However, when you look a little deeper you’ll see that ClassPoint is more than just a polling and quizzing tool. ClassPoint includes tools for annotating slides and creating online whiteboards on the fly. You can even use it to randomly select names.

Remote learning is slowly becoming one of the most popular forms of education in the world because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While there are plenty of advantages to studying remotely, there are also many challenges that students will face.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for educators. For many of the teachers who responded to a nationally-representative survey we conducted last spring, the 2020-2021 school year was the most difficult time of their careers. But in the midst of these challenges, some teachers found ways to use blended learning to build relationships with their students, identify their students’ needs, and empower their students to take ownership of their learning.

In October 2020, the authors accepted an invitation to participate in an experimental collaboration observing an equitable, global, and inclusive process. Inspired by an Inclusive Classroom webinar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the shared Decolonizing Checklist, the authors considered our tasks: 1) to develop a checklist or brief guide that is international in scope to help librarians worldwide develop their own or other educators’ instructional materials, that is antiracist or inclusive, and 2) to publish the checklist/guide and a reflective essay of the process.

“Real world projects have to be projects that matter to kids” is something that I say whenever I give my presentation, Connecting Kids With Projects That Matter to Them. When the problem they’re tackling matters to them, students feel ownership of the project process. Even a cursory glance at Tract reveals dozens of interesting projects undertaken by students that could be interesting and meaningful to your students as well.

The last two years have been mentally and emotionally exhausting for everyone in education. As I work with leadership teams, many are struggling to engage their teachers in professional learning this year. Schools invested money in purchasing devices and improving access to reliable internet to meet the demands of the pandemic, and leadership teams want to keep the momentum going. They are excited about the potential of leveraging this technology to create more dynamic, differentiated, and student-centered learning experiences.
