The discipline of instructional design continues to evolve as new technologies, learning environments, models of how people learn, and professionals with different backgrounds enter the field. Invariably, we continue to revisit the question of what the essential competencies of instructional designers are. The short answer to this question is, “It all depends'', as my ID guru, Dr. Clint J. Wallington would have responded to any important question.
Nowadays, with the convenience of the Internet and social media, it is easy to post such questions and receive, in a matter of days, many opinions ranging from the obvious to the intriguing. All these opinions would be valid reflections of what professionals deem essential and should deserve credit at face value. The mere act of responding to such a request shows concern for the professionalization of the discipline and years of experience to inform their opinions.
