The Brazilian Air Force and Embraer have signed a $215 million contract to modernize five EMB 145 AEW&C, also called the E-99. Comprising six mission planning and analysis stations that will provide crew training and improvement, the contract provides electronic warfare systems updation, command and control systems by Atech, electronic countermeasures and air surveillance radar.
The FAB’s E-99 is built on the ERJ 145 regional jet’s successful platform. It can detect, track and identify targets transmitting information to allied forces.
It can also perform airspace management, fighter positioning and interception control, intelligence and surveillance missions signal and will provide security for Brazilian sporting events to take place in coming years.
Luiz Carlos Aguiar, President, Embraer Defense and Security, said, “The upgrade allows FAB a continuous excellence in operating national air defense systems. The E-99 has a strategic role in airspace control and Brazilian border surveillance”.
Brigadier Carlos Baptista de Almeida Junior, President of Copac for FAB, said, “The AEW&C aircraft has been a great value add for the FAB in recent decades, and an asset in mission accomplishment, and updating and expanding their operational capacity will greatly enhance their contribution”.

One of the most striking warships ever built is coming together in the little coastal town of Bath, Maine. The major components of the 610-foot-long ZUMWALT (DDG 1000) — a “destroyer” in name only — have been assembled this winter at the General Dynamics shipyard of Bath Iron Works, and the ship’s stark, tumblehome hull and superstructure is now together. These views were taken on Jan. 15, 2013, shortly after the deckhouse – built at Huntington Ingalls in Gulfport, Miss. — was lowered onto the hull.
The ZUMWALT will displace more than 15,600 tons full load, bigger than most World War II heavy cruisers. Eighty feet wide with a draft of more than 27 feet, the ship’s turbine generators will produce 78 megawatts of power, one of the largest electrical loads ever put to sea. The ship’s integrated power system will allow much of that power to be directed as needed, perhaps to future laser or directed energy weapons.
Construction of the ZUMWALT officially began in February 2009, and the ship is to be launched into the Kennebec River this summer. Delivery is to take place later in 2014, but it will likely be another two or three years before the ship and its host of new-technology systems is ready for service.
Two more ships of the class, the MICHAEL MONSOOR (DDG 1001) and LYNDON B. JOHNSON (DDG 1002), also are under construction at Bath. No more ships of this class are currently planned.
Les parties en acier sont recouvertes d'une sous-couche couleur rouge tandis que les superstructures et le hangar avia peints en gris sont en matériau composite. Le DDG-1000 devrait être mis à l'eau dans les prochains mois.

Cassidian Optronics GmbH, previously known as Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH, will supply the new "Attica" thermal imaging unit for the commander's periscope in the Bundeswehr's Leopard 2 battle tanks. After extensive trials, the German procurement authority BAAINBw (Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support) has awarded this Cassidian subsidiary an order to deliver the "Attica" to a value of almost 7 million euros. The third generation of thermal imaging equipment from Cassidian Optronics thus becomes the standard for the commander's Peri R17 periscope, which is also supplied by Cassidian Optronics.

Kaohsiung, Jan. 22 (CNA) The latest minehunters added to the Taiwan's arsenal were shown in public for the first time as the country's Navy held an anti-submarine drill Tuesday to highlight its combat readiness. The exercise, which was open to the media, simulated an emergency in which the Navy dispatched a frigate from Tsoying naval base in Kaohsiung to counter a potential submarine attack by enemy forces. The Dyihuah frigate -- one of six Lafayette-class ships purchased from France in the 1990s -- sailed into the Taiwan Strait accompanied by two retrofitted U.S.-made coastal minehunters deployed to keep the sea free of mines and two Chengkung-class frigates. Taiwan received the minehunters last August and were exposing them to public scrutiny for the first time Tuesday. An S-2T anti-submarine aircraft was then dispatched to locate the opposing submarine, followed by an anti-submarine S-70C helicopter sent out to deploy dipping sonar systems to confirm the location of the submarine. The submarine was finally pushed to the surface after the S-70C launched a simulated attack by firing a torpedo, concluding the drill. Naval officials said the exercise was held to highlight the military's efforts to stay alert and strengthen combat readiness ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year break in February.
