30 Untranslatable Words From Other Languages Illustrated By Anjana Iyer

30 Untranslatable Words From Other Languages Illustrated By Anjana Iyer | Bilingually Enriched Learners | Scoop.it
When something is “lost in translation,” it could have been due to a simple mistake or due to the fact that one language was not quite able to capture the essence of a word's meaning in another language. This conflict is the idea behind New Zealand-based designer Anjana Iyer's “Found in Translation” series of images, which try to explain the meaning behind words in other languages that have no direct equivalent in English.

Mastering ESL & Bilingual Methods: Foundations

A mini lecture on the foundations of ESL & Bilingual Teaching Methods. Much of this comes from Herrera & Murry's Text Mastering Mastering ESL & Bilingual ...
Dennis Swender's insight:

Herrera & Murry's [sic] text remains on the cutting edge for research-supported methodology positively impacting the academic achievement of English Learners (ELs).

Three observations regarding Tuzi's mini lecture comments:

1.  At approx 8:02, the "L" in the LEP acronym is not correctly identified as "Limited" English Proficient / Proficiency.

2.  At approx 36:00, Tuzi claims that the students left behind (in the NCLB Act) "…are generally the less important students."  Interestingly, it was the NCLB Act that first required districts to be accountable for the cognitive academic learning achievement of ELs and other special needs students by including them in the assessment of learning outcomes.  Prior to that time, there was little incentive to provide local funding support for special needs populations beyond limited state and federal grant allotments.  This was one of the reasons why several civil rights organizations (i.e.,  LULAC, LaRaza, and the NAACP) have consistently supported the necessity for and extension of this Act.

3.  Toward the end of the lecture, Tuzi conveys a more conservative (language learning) approach regarding EL methodology, which, at best, provides a philosophical balance to Herrera and Murry's content-based and bilingual advocacies.

Phraseum - language learning online

Phraseum - language learning online | Bilingually Enriched Learners | Scoop.it

The Web offers huge opportunities to improve any foreign language you’re learning, from news stories, blog posts, comments and all that content. So, find sites with your favourite topics and read them regularly. Phraseum will help you save and organize all useful sentences you come across while reading, in order to learn them later.
You can organize your clips by tags (situation, meaning …) and personal categories (your projects, meetings …)
You can also search for and re-save phrases that others have saved
or discover phrases that match the topics of your interests in your Phrase feed.

Vocabulary builing tool with a web clipper that can be added to a browser for quick additions to a tagged phrasebook - looks like a very interesting use of browser technology that promotes learner autonomy

Amadeu Marin's curator insight, June 7, 2014 8:23 AM

Excellent idea! A fantastic tool to build up a collection of useful chunks or phrases around topics, situations, etc.

LEARNING TIP:

Phraseum provides what they call a 'clipping button' that you

drag onto your browser bookmark bar. Then, while you're reading online, you can highlight a piece of text (collocations, chunks, idioms, etc.) you want to clip, then hit the Phraseum clipping button to save and categorize the phrase into your account to learn or use later.

You can also share the phrases and phrasebooks you create and subscribe to other people's.

Juan Fernández's curator insight, August 1, 2014 3:29 PM
Nik Peachey's insight:

This is a really fantastic tool for the collaborative learning of phrases and collocations. Every language learner should be using this.
