When Case Western Reserve University launches a new health education campus with the Cleveland Clinic next year, one feature will be conspicuously absent. There will be no place for cadavers.
The school plans to replace the usual anatomy labs with a new series of hands-on experiences, including a virtual-reality simulation.
The reason, says Mark Griswold, a professor at the medical school, is that running a cadaver lab is costly and difficult.
Can enthusiasm for virtual reality be converted into learning gains? That was the topic of a research project at Cornell University, which recently pitted VR against hands-on and computer-based activities. The bottom line: Researchers found students learned equally well in all three modes.
PubMed comprises more than 30 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.
In recent years, experts have focused on finding better ways to improve remotely delivered mental health care.
Now, virtual reality (VR) may pave the way for myriad new opportunities.
Using VR for remote therapy involves conducting “face-to-face” sessions in a virtual environment. This mode of treatment could make counselling more accessible to those living and working remotely.
My colleagues and I published a paper exploring VR’s potential in providing counselling for people in regional areas.
While face-to-face therapy remains the optimal treatment method, we discovered VR-based therapy was more effective than Skype-based counselling.
Virtual Therapy: VR is taking off in the film and gaming industries, and now the medical profession are taking interest. New software is helping patients around the world to relieve mental health conditions like PTSD and Alzheimer's.
At Oxford University a new study has phobia sufferers immersed in claustrophobic or stressful situations. Professor Daniel Freedman explains, "After just 30 minutes of VR...there were large reductions in paranoia". As a sensory stimulator, carers say Alzheimer sufferers enjoy reduced agitation when using the therapy. Trialed in 50 US hospitals, it has also become a key tool in treating soldiers with PTSD
Virtual reality is an effective enhancement to classroom instruction that brings experiences to students beyond the lecture or textbook. Many teachers assume the equipment to view virtual reality content is expensive, however, there are dozens of free educational apps, containing hundreds of virtual reality videos that can be viewed through an ordinary cell phone and low-priced Google Cardboard viewers.
Would you reanimate a loved one after they pass away? The burgeoning digital afterlife industry wants to make virtual connections with the dead a common practice for people grieving.
A new report covering trends in virtual reality has suggested that three-dimensional audio will begin appearing along with "conversational platforms" and the increased use of artificial intelligence.

Mobile Virtual Reality (VR) was already hanging on by a thread when Google pulled out its shears and cut its last lifeline by ending development and future device support of Google Daydream even though Google’s new Pixel 4’s screen supports up to 90 Hz, which would have provided a better VR experience. This market development is not surprising, as mobile VR has been stagnant for over a year, with other proponents (namely Oculus and Samsung) also pivoting away from smartphone-based VR solutions.

Virtual Reality is failing to live up to the hype - but why? One problem is a lack of imagination. In a world of limitless possibilities, there's no need to test-drive a virtual family sedan.
