Someone's built the entire Earth in Minecraft - to scale •

Someone's built the entire Earth in Minecraft - to scale • | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it
Seeing as nobody's going outside at the moment, it would be pretty great to have an entire version of Earth to explore in a video game, right?

Enter PippenFTS, a YouTuber who claims to have made a 1:1 scale version of the Earth in Minecraft for the very first time. It's been made possible through the use of two mods, Terra 1-to-1 and Cubic Chunks. As explained by PippenFTS, Minecraft normally has a height limit of 255m, which would have made full-scale Earth terrain impossible. Using Cubic Chunks "changes the shape of Minecraft chunks to 16x16x16 cube, giving you infinite build depth in both vertical directions".

"With the Cubic Chunks mod breaking Minecraft's vertical limitations, we can now experience the Earth in Minecraft, just as it is, with no downscaling of any kind."

The next stage is applying the Terra 1-1 mod, which takes information from geographical data archives (such as Google Maps) and converts it into Minecraft blocks. The video shows a number of vast landmarks realised in Minecraft, such as Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, and Half Dome from Yosemite National Park in the US.

A new virtual reality device from a team of Carnegie Mellon University researchers allows users to "feel" virtual walls and objects.
Kim Flintoff's insight:
"A new virtual reality device from a team of Carnegie Mellon University researchers allows users to "feel" virtual walls and objects. The invention, dubbed "Wireality," uses multiple string-loaded cables attached to the hand and fingers to simulate the sensation of solidity. When a user's hand is close to a wall in the virtual environment, for example, the strings are locked in place to emulate the sensation of touching the wall. Similar actions enable the user to feel the surface of an irregular object, sense resistance when he or she pushes up against something or interact physically with a virtual character."

The World’s Biggest Social Virtual Reality Gathering Is Happening Right Now

The World’s Biggest Social Virtual Reality Gathering Is Happening Right Now | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it
It’s one of the most under-appreciated science fiction films of the past decade, but Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (also the most expensive independent film ever made) subtly depicts a compelling vision for the way tools like augmented and virtual reality devices may intersect with the future of online shopping. virtual reality V-Ket 4 Aaron Image Credit: Aaron Frank The scene takes place in Big Market, a massive inter-dimensional marketplace consisting of more than a million shops. In reality, it’s located in a giant empty desert, but it can be accessed by visiting shoppers through their head-worn AR glasses. Take a look for yourself.
Kim Flintoff's insight:
"Aside from showcasing how augmented reality can transform our relationship to physical land in unpredictable ways, even barren desert landscapes, it showcases what an almost fully “online” shopping experience might be like if you could physically walk through it in three-dimensional space. While we’re far from a Big Market existing in the real world, I’ve just experienced what is perhaps its closest precursor entirely in virtual reality using my own Oculus Rift headset at home. It’s called Virtual Market, and right now the fourth edition is currently underway in VRChat, one of the most-used social VR applications today."

Can virtual nature be a good substitute for the great outdoors? The science says yes.

Can virtual nature be a good substitute for the great outdoors? The science says yes. | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it
Between 1972 and 1981 Roger Ulrich investigated the records of 46 patients recovering from gallbladder surgery. Patients’ rooms on one side of the hospital looked out onto deciduous trees. The others looked out onto a brick wall. Ulrich, who believed his view of a pine tree aided in his recovery from kidney disease as a teenager, wanted to find out whether those with natural scenery might enjoy greater restorative benefits than those without.

The results spoke for themselves — and went on to influence a generation of nature research. Patients with the tree view enjoyed shorter postoperative stays, had fewer negative evaluative comments from nurses, took fewer moderate and strong analgesic doses, and had slightly lower scores for minor post-surgical complications. Even from a distance, the earth’s flora impacted the patients profoundly.

Small, tranquil moments like wind rustling through trees; Panoramas only accessible from mountaintops; Fewer of us are experiencing such events than ever before. But as it turns out, taking a forest bath in a nature-rich title such as Red Dead Redemption 2 might just stimulate our brains in similar ways. According to scientific researchers across the world, virtual nature could provide psychological and physiological benefits comparable to the real thing.

Experiential learning new step is virtual reality
Diego Herrón García's curator insight, May 1, 2020 1:43 AM
VR education strikes as being an amazing tool for many things in the future, not only education. Although we need to wonder to what extent technology is beneficial and harmful for human beings, I think that we are not very far from the future in which we can attend a class or any type of meeting through VR. It is quite interesting how one watched movies that showed advanced technology that we thought was impossible to create or very far being real, but now it has come the time for VR. This type of technology will be great for those who cannot travel for multiple reasons because they will be able to explore some famous places around the world by using VR; although I feel that nothing equals traveling and physical interaction, VR will definitely make our lives easier in many aspects, such as Education and jobs. In the near future, one will not need to attend a class at a university or attend a meeting physically; instead, we will attend those meetings virtually by using an avatar or whatever it is. Since I am focused on language learning, I am looking forward to the day in which this type of technology is available for the common people so that we can learn languages by using this type of technology. I imagine myself being with my students in a certain place in VR and teaching them English while talking to them about the place and culture, it would be amazing. I think that VR will definitely change our lives forever because, once it is brought out for the common people, many things that we are used to do in our daily lives will become less often.

Over the next two months, Kosovo's University for Business and Technology will be using the EON Reality platform to create 20,000 augmented/virtual reality lessons across a variety of subjects.
Kim Flintoff's insight:
"Over the next two months, Kosovo's University for Business and Technology will be using the EON Reality platform to create 20,000 augmented/virtual reality lessons across a variety of subjects. The work is the first large-scale adoption of EON Reality's recently announced Self-Directed Learning Initiative, which provides a framework for students to create their own interactive learning content as part of coursework.

Two thousand students in 14 bachelor's programs and eight master's programs at the university will be assigned to execute 10 AR/VR lessons each. The programs range from Architecture and Energy Engineering to Nursing, Integrated Design and Agricultural and Environmental Engineering. A group of "high-level educators and experts" will select the best lessons to supplement the existing curricula on EON Reality's platform, according to news announcement. "Ultimately, the goal is to build a catalog of enough high-quality lessons to offer full academic curricula in numerous subjects and languages to educators and administrators for use in both remote learning as well as in-person classes," the company said."

Xennial Digital makes climate change Xennial Digital makes climate change tangible | Magic Leap | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

"Our brain’s inability to deal with issues we deem too far into the future is one of the reasons why scientists say people are not addressing climate change faster — some don’t even think it’s real. Turns out, talking about a nondescript threat does not trigger the inherent flight or fight response necessary to take action. Rather, many environmentalists believe showing the scenarios is most effective.

That’s what Xennial Digital is doing for K-12 education through a spatial computing experience on Magic Leap. The extended reality (XR) company was selected for Magic Leap’s Independent Creator Program (ICP), which supports cutting edge development. Xennial began working in the education space a few years ago when the U.S. Department of Education opened a challenge to propose transformative educational solutions.

Their climate change application available on Magic Leap World presents different scientific predictions — from optimistic to nightmare — across five key data points: ice fraction, precipitation, air temperature, ocean temperature and sea level rise."

Kim Flintoff's insight:

Xennial wants to address a pressing global challenge, and believes a spatial computing based learning experience focused on climate change will have long-term impact. Potential users agree, as the idea has already received a great deal of interest. For one, administrators and teachers are seeking more factual resources as part of K-12 Earth sciences and environmental courses."
