How to Dub a Video in Another Language

How to Dub a Video in Another Language | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Dubbing your content in another language will make it more accessible. And you can do it yourself at home.

Dub tracks have long been a part of the film and television industry, but nowadays, indie creators are producing videos in different languages. It's well worth it too when you consider the new audiences you can reach when you offer a video in a different language.

Producing a dub track uses just about the same equipment that you probably already have if you create your own videos, and the process is also a lot easier than you might think.

Here's how to dub your video in another language.

How Dubbing Works

Dubbing a video is a fairly straightforward process that begins by creating a translation of the original dialogue. Using this script, a voice actor will work in small sections to record the new dialogue while watching the video.

The aim of a good dub is to match the new dialogue with the lip movements on screen. After the recording process is completed, a final round of audio editing ensures that the audio and video are perfectly synced.

Keep in mind that some platforms give you the option of uploading a separate audio track, so you don't need to upload two separate videos. YouTube is one platform making videos more accessible by giving creators the option to upload a dub track.

What You Need to Dub a Video in Another Language

There are only a few things you need to dub a video in another language, and they can be flexible depending on your budget and resources.

Microphone Video/Audio Recording software Translated copy of the original audio Someone to voice the translated script

The main equipment required is a microphone and some recording software. The microphone you use can be a simple USB desk mic, and many video editors let you record audio directly into the session.

Translating your dialogue will pose a different challenge. Tools like Google Translate can help you get a rough draft prepared, but you might need to work with a native speaker to make it sound natural.

Finally, you will need to find someone—a paid voice actor, or a friend—who can speak a second language. There are many ways you can dub a video in another language, but if you happen to speak a second language already then you can do the job yourself.

1. Finalize Your Video

Before beginning the dubbing process, you need to have a completed edit of your video. Any changes made to the video after dubbing means you will have to go back and re-record any new dialogue that is inserted. This should be the first step in the dubbing process.

2. Transcribe and Translate the Dialogue

Next, you will need to transcribe the dialogue from the video into written text. This script is what you will be translating into another language.

Indie creators, and those working with a small budget, might be interested in exploring the best online translators available on the internet. They may not be perfect, but they can be a good starting point.

You should still work on fine-tuning the translation afterward to make it sound natural. Take some time to work with a native speaker to get it right. This could be the voice actor you are working with or someone else you know.

In addition, you will need to print a copy of the translated script for the voice actor to read during the recording process.

3. Set Up Your Equipment

Place your microphone in a quiet room, free from background noise. Then set up a computer or second screen close to the voice actor, so they can watch the video as they read the script.

In a professional studio, the voice actor will be in a separate room from the recording engineer. But for most people recording from home, you will probably be working in the same room. Here are some DIY hacks to improve your home studio if you're looking to improve the sound quality.

4. Set Up Your Recording Session

No matter what video/audio editing software you use, the dubbing process will require a similar setup. We will be using Davinci Resolve 18 (Free) to demonstrate, but the same will apply to any other recording software you use.

Start by importing your video into a new session by selecting File > Import Media, then drag the clip from the master clip area onto the editing timeline. Following that, click on the Fairlight tab located at the bottom of the screen to view the audio editing window.

Next, right-click on the head section of the original audio track, then select Add Track > Mono.

To change the microphone input, navigate to the Mixer panel and click on the input slot on the channel strip, then select Input.

From the window that appears, select the microphone input you want to use from the left-hand side and press Patch.

Finally, check that it's working by pressing the R button on the track to arm it for recording. You will be able to see the gain (volume) meter become active when you speak into the microphone.

5. Record Your Dub Track

Now, it's time to bring in your voice actor and begin recording the translated script. You might find it useful to watch the original video first to get familiar with the timing.

When you are ready for a run-through, mute the original audio track and press the record button in the timeline tools to start recording. Watch for the lip movements on screen and aim to voice the new dialogue at the same time. For accuracy, it's best to work on recording just a few phrases, or even single sentences, at a time.

Repeat this process until you have recorded the new dialogue for the entire video.

6. Sync the Audio and Video

To sync the audio with the video precisely right, you need to line the audio file exactly with what you see on screen. You can use a couple of tactics to achieve this.

In post-production, you can watch the video while listening to the audio, moving the audio file in the timeline a little to the left or right, until the dialogue begins exactly when the person on screen starts to speak.

Another method is to use the original audio track as a guide. When you zoom in on the audio file you can see the waveform of the audio. The mountain-like peaks that are visible represent the pattern of someone speaking. It's a good visual clue, showing you where you need to line up your dub track.

By the end of the editing stage, you should be able to watch the entire video from start to finish, with the new dub track perfectly in sync with the visuals.

7. Export Your Dub Track

When you are happy with the results, it's time to export the new dub track. To do this in DaVinci Resolve, right-click on the audio waveform in the timeline and select Export Audio Files.

These are the key export settings you need to change:

File format: WAV Sample rate: Same as project Bit depth: 24 Channel format: Interleaved Export: Individual clips From: Selected clips Normalize: No normalization

You also have the option of exporting the entire video with the new dub track. Make sure that the original track is muted, then switch to the Deliver tab at the bottom of the screen. Adjust the export settings and press Add to Render Queue. When ready, hit the Render All button in the Render Queue list.

Indie Creators Can Produce Dub Tracks Too

Creating a dub track isn't just for people working in Hollywood. Individual creators can produce dub tracks in other languages too, and it's well worth it to make your videos more accessible to a wider audience.

Luckily, the process isn't too complicated, and you won't need any special equipment besides the video editing software you already use, a microphone, and someone who speaks a second language.

Elon Musk FINAL WARNING About Chat GPT: ''You Don't Know What's Coming!''

One of the most notable instances of the extraordinary progress made in artificial intelligence in recent years is OpenAI's ChatGPT language model. By providing previously unheard-of capabilities for producing text responses that resemble human speech, this ground-breaking technology has the potential to fundamentally alter how people engage with robots. Elon Musk, a businessman and visionary, and other significant individuals in the tech sector have taken note of this quick advancement.

Elon Musk, known for his ventures in electric vehicles and space exploration, has been a vocal advocate for responsible AI development. While acknowledging the incredible potential of AI, he has consistently warned about the dangers associated with its unfettered advancement. Recently, Musk issued a final warning specifically concerning ChatGPT, expressing concerns that demand careful consideration by both developers and users of this powerful language model.

Elon Musk has expressed concerns about the potential dangers and risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) in general. Elon Musk has frequently emphasized the necessity for careful assessment of the ramifications of AI development and has been a vocal supporter of its responsible development. He has highlighted the possibility that AI could outperform human intelligence, become unmanageable, or pose existential concerns as risks of creating AI without enough protections in place.

Musk has called for aggressive measures to ensure the ethical and safe application of AI technology and expressed concern about the lack of regulation and oversight in the field of AI development. To address the possible risks linked with AI, he has emphasized the value of putting in place strict safety measures, encouraging transparency, and encouraging collaboration between researchers and organizations. Any sophisticated AI system, including language models like ChatGPT, can be extrapolated to address his concerns about the possible dangers of AI and the need for responsible development. These worries could relate to things like bias in language generated, the possibility of misuse or manipulation, and the overall effect of AI on societal dynamics.

How I'm Fighting Bias In Algorithms // Joy Buolamwini  [TED Talk]

"MIT grad student Joy Buolamwini was working with facial analysis software when she noticed a problem: the software didn't detect her face -- because the people who coded the algorithm hadn't taught it to identify a broad range of skin tones and facial structures. Now she's on a mission to fight bias in machine learning, a phenomenon she calls the "coded gaze." It's an eye-opening talk about the need for accountability in coding ... as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our lives."

In gaming, communication is key.

Whether instructing teammates what to do in an online battle or explaining to your friend what stage of a game you’ve reached, it’s beneficial to know what to say.

With more people playing together or alone, it has become evident that gaming has its own language. Not wanting to feel left out, here’s a list of key definitions that anyone gaming needs to know.

ARPG
ARPG stands for action role playing game. A genre of gaming that heavily involves combat with other characters and enemies to advance the story. Games in this genre include Diablo 3, Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Elder Scrolls.

Backwards compatibility
This pertains to being able to play games from an older console on a newer one. For example, the PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible because it can play PlayStation 4 discs, but the PlayStation 4 is not because it can not play discs from any other console generation.

Cheesing
Refers to the act of exploiting loopholes or opportunities in which the challenge in a game is greatly reduced in difficulty. For example, if a player finds a way to defeat a game boss by being on a platform he’s not supposed to be on, or using a weapon he should not be using, then he is cheesing.

Backwards compatibility allows players to play games from an older console on a newer one. Bloomberg

Camping
Used primarily in online shooters, this refers to players who prefer to stay put in a hidden area and snipe at enemies as they appear, rather than going on the hunt. Camping isn't always looked upon positively by players, as it can seem lazy or cowardly.

Easter egg
These are little nods or prizes left by the developers for fans to find and scavenge for while playing. It could be anything from a special weapon that can only be obtained after performing a meticulous or arduous task, or a funny picture left on a wall in a game.

Escort mission
These are missions that involve taking a non-playable character from one area to another while protecting them from enemies. These missions are often a source of frustration for players as they must focus on more than one task to succeed.

Grinding
Refers to the act of performing a task or tasks that grow things like inventory or powers. Grinding usually means doing one thing for long hours until a particular goal is achieved. Usually used when playing games such as World of Warcraft.

GG
Simply means good game. Often used after a match is won or lost and said to an online opponent. It can also be used to get a rise out of an opponent when beating them convincingly, essentially said sarcastically rather than sincerely.

Haptic feedback
A feature of the PlayStation 5 controllers, haptic feedback is when an action in the game translates to accurate sensations and vibrations from the controller. The feature is used in games to elevate the experience whether it be shooting a weapon or the swelling of music during key scenes.

NPC
NPC stands for non-playable character. These are all and any characters in a game that cannot be controlled by a player. The term can also be used derogatorily if wanting to describe someone as being boring or without a personality.

OP
OP stands for overpowered. The term is used to describe characters or enemies whose powers or abilities are unbalanced. OP is used in frustration when an opponent is proving hard to defeat, saying that your shortcomings are due to them being overpowered rather than a lack of skill.

Rage quit
Used frequently during online match up games such as EA Sports FC 24 or Call of Duty, rage quitting is when an opponent abruptly quits their game due to being beaten. People who rage quit will often blame their internet connection to avoid embarrassment.

Speed-run
A speed-run is an attempt to complete a game in record time. Speed-runners often record or stream their attempts, partly as proof but also as content for viewers who enjoy watching games be conquered quickly.

Roguelike
A genre of games that involve procedurally generated levels, turn-based combat and character death. Games in this genre have grown in popularity recently, with games such as Hades, Dead Cells and The Binding of Isaac.

Soulslike
A subgenre of action role-playing games, they’re often characterised for being very difficult to master and defeat. The name comes from the Dark Souls games. Some of the most famous soulslike games are Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls and Elden Ring.

Hatha Yoga Training : Hatha Yoga (ha="sun" tha="moon") seeks to unite mental via the practice of asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (yoga breathing), mudra (body gestures), bandha (energy locks or seals), and shatkarma (internal cleansing). These muscle techniques are intended to strengthen and detoxify physical health, nurture prana (life-force energy), and ignite kundalini (dormant spiritual energy). Modern Hatha Yoga does not highlight most of these esoteric approaches and rather focuses primarily on physical yoga practises.

What exactly is Hatha Yoga Training?

The Sanskrit term "hatha" may be rendered into English in two ways: as "deliberate" or "forceful," referring to the active path of yoga—or as "sun" (ha) and "moon" (tha), referring to the yoga of balance. Taken together, hatha yoga may be characterized as a series of intentional and active practices that attempt to attain peace and equilibrium in the mind, body, and spirit. This kind of yoga is known as "the vigorous way," and it incorporates the practice of physical postures as well as breathing exercises. Hatha yoga is the most common form of yoga class offered in the Western world. This approach is the foundation for the majority of the popular kinds of yoga practiced in yoga studios. It is frequently used to denote a gentler or more newcomer approach.

Hatha Yoga's Origins

Hatha Yoga Training is a relatively new style in the history of yoga training, having evolved from Tantra Yoga philosophies and techniques. Tantrics valued the physical body as a route to enlightenment, creating the physical-spiritual linkages and body-centered practices that led to Hatha Yoga. However, Hatha Yoga is different in that it focuses on altering the physical body via cleansing and nurturing of the body's subtle energies. This project's ultimate purposeThe goal of this style of yoga is to focus life energy into the central channel and bring it up to the crown chakra. The secret techniques of breath retention, bandhas, and mudras that would channel and elevate one's energy levels high enough to achieve enlightenment are not taught in most current programs. We always try to give you best information on our website so you can follow Shashank Goyal Digital Marketing and you’ll find interesting content every week. Each of the Hatha Yoga Training of this type of yoga is viewed as a preparatory stage to obtaining the deeper levels of meditation and enlightenment discovered on the raja yoga path.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is the oldest and most frequently utilized ancient treatise on the physical methods of Hatha Yoga. This book was created in the 15th century CE by Swami Swatamarama and is taken from ancient Sanskrit literature, the teachings of well-known masters, and Swatamarama's personal yogic experiences. The primary purpose of this publication is to enlighten Hatha Yoga's physical disciplines and practices and to link them with Raja Yoga's higher spiritual aspirations.

Swatamarama continues by clarifying the link between the two, teaching us that Hatha Yoga Training is a preparatory practice for Raja Yoga. He claims that gaining self-control and identity is much simpler when we begin with the physical and energetic body rather than attempting to manage the thought directly as in Raja Yoga. Good Yoga results comes with a Daily routine and this is one of the Good Habits you can admire. Through the command of the prana, or energy of the body, we may then appropriate the control of our thoughts and gain success with Raja Yoga.

We present the latest updates on ChatGPT, Bard and other competitors in the artificial intelligence arms race.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
By Sophie Bushwick, Lauren Leffer on October 2, 2023

We present the latest updates on ChatGPT, Bard and other competitors in the artificial intelligence arms race.

Full Transcript

LAUREN LEFFER: At the end of November, it’ll be one year since ChatGPT was first made public, rapidly accelerating the artificial intelligence arms race. And a lot has changed over the course of 10 months.

SOPHIE BUSHWICK: In just the past few weeks, both OpenAI and Google have introduced big new features to their AI chatbots.

LEFFER: And Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is jumping in the ring too, with its own public facing chatbots.

BUSHWICK: I mean, we learned about one of these news updates just minutes before recording this episode of Tech, Quickly, the version of Scientific American’s Science, Quickly podcast that keeps you updated on the lightning-fast advances in AI. I’m Sophie Bushwick, tech editor at Scientific American.
LEFFER: And I’m Lauren Leffer, tech reporting fellow.

[Clip: Show theme music]

BUSHWICK: So what are these new features these AI models are getting?

LEFFER: Let’s start with multimodality. Public versions of both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard can now interpret and respond to image and audio prompts, not just text. You can speak to the chatbots, kind of like the Siri feature on an iPhone, and get an AI-generated audio reply back. You can also feed the bots pictures, drawings or diagrams, and ask for information about those visuals, and get a text response.

BUSHWICK: That is awesome. How can people get access to this?

LEFFER: Google’s version is free to use, while OpenAI is currently limiting its new feature to premium subscribers who pay $20 per month.

BUSHWICK: And multimodality is a big change, right? When I say “Large language model,” that used to mean text and text only.

LEFFER: Yeah, it’s a really good point. ChatGPT and Bard were initially built to parse and predict just text. We don’t know exactly what’s happened behind the scenes to get these multimodal models. But the basic idea is that these companies probably added together aspects of different AI models that they’ve built—say existing ones that auto-transcribe spoken language or generate descriptions of images—and then they used those tools to expand their text models into new frontiers.

BUSHWICK: So it sounds like behind the scenes we’ve got these sort of Frankenstein’s monster of models?

LEFFER: Sort of. It’s less Frankenstein, more kind of like Mr. Potato head, in that you have the same basic body just with new bits added on. Same potato, new nose.

Once you add in new capacities to a text-based AI, then you can train your expanded model on mixed-media data, like photos paired with captions, and boost its ability to interpret images and spoken words. And the resulting AIs have some really neat applications.

BUSHWICK: Yeah, I’ve played around with the updated ChatGPT, and this ability to analyze photos really impressed me.

LEFFER: Yeah, I had both Bard and ChatGPT try to describe what type of person I am based on a photo of my bookshelf.

BUSHWICK: Oh my god, it’s the new internet personality test! So what does your AI book horoscope tell you?

LEFFER: So not to brag, but to be honest both bots were pretty complimentary (I have a lot of books). But beyond my own ego, the book test demonstrates how people could use these tools to produce written interpretations of images, including inferred context. You know, this might be helpful for people with limited vision or other disabilities, and OpenAI actually tested their visual GPT-4 with blind users first.

BUSHWICK: That’s really cool. What are some other applications here?

LEFFER: Yeah, I mean, this sort of thing could be helpful for anyone—sighted or not—trying to understand a photo of something they’re unfamiliar with. Think, like, bird identification or repairing a car. In a totally different example, I also got ChatGPT to correctly split up a complicated bar tab from a photo of a receipt. It was way faster than I could’ve done the math, even with a calculator.

BUSHWICK: And when I was trying out ChatGPT, I took a photo of the view from my office window, asked ChatGPT what it was (which is the Statue of Liberty), and then asked it for directions. And it not only told me how to get the ferry, but gave me advice like “wear comfortable shoes.”

LEFFER: The directions thing was pretty wild.

BUSHWICK: It almost seemed like magic, but, of course…

LEFFER: It’s definitely not. It’s still just the result of lots and lots of training data, fed into a very big and complicated network of computer code. But even though it’s not a magic wand, multimodality is a really significant enough upgrade that might help OpenAI attract and retain users better than it has been. You know, despite all the new stories going around, fewer people have actually been using ChatGPT over the past three months. Usership dropped by about 10% for the first time in June, another 10% in July, and about 3% in August. The prevailing theory is that this has to do with summer break from school—but still losing users is losing users.

BUSHWICK: That makes sense. And this is also a problem for OpenAI, because it has all this competition. For instance, we have Google, which is keeping its own edge by taking its multimodal AI tool and putting it into a bunch of different products.

LEFFER: You mean like Gmail? Is Bard going to write all my emails from now on?
BUSHWICK: I mean, if you want it to. If you have a Gmail account, or even if you use YouTube or Google, if you have files stored in Google Drive, you can opt in and give Bard access to this individual account data. And then you can ask it to do things with that data, like find a specific video, summarize text from your emails, it can even offer specific location-based information. Basically, Google seems to be making Bard into an all-in-one digital assistant.

LEFFER: Digital assistant? That sounds kind of familiar. Is that at all related to the virtual chatbot pals that Meta is rolling out?

BUSHWICK: Sort of! Meta just announced it’s not introducing just one AI assistant, it’s introducing all these different AI personalities that you’re supposedly going to be able to interact with in Instagram or WhatsApp or its other products. The idea is it’s got one main AI assistant you can use, but you can also choose to interact with an AI that looks like Snoop Dogg and is supposedly modeled off specific personalities. You can also interact with an AI that has specialized function, like a travel agent.

LEFFER: When you're listing all of these different versions of an AI avatar you can interact with, the only thing my mind goes to is Clippy from the old school Microsoft Word. Is that basically what this is?

BUSHWICK: Sort of. You can have, like, a Mr. Beast Clippy, where when you're talking with it, it does – you know how Clippy kind of bounced and changed shape – these images of the avatars will sort of move as if they're actually participating in the conversation with you. I haven't gotten to try this out myself yet, but it does sound pretty freaky.

LEFFER: Okay, so we've got Mr. Beat, we've got Snoop Dogg. Anyone else?

BUSHWICK: Let's see, Paris Hilton comes to mind. And there's a whole slew of these. And I'm kind of interested to see whether people actually choose to interact with their favorite celebrity version or whether they choose the less anthropomorphized versions.

LEFFER: So these celebrity avatars, or whichever form you're going to be interacting with Meta’s AI in, is it also going to be able to access my Meta account data? I mean, there's like so much concern out there already about privacy and large language models. If there's a risk that these tools could regurgitate sensitive information from their training data or user interactions, why would I let Bard go through my emails or Meta read my Instagram DMs.

BUSHWICK: Privacy policies depend on the company. According to Google, it’s taken steps to ensure privacy for users who opt into the new integration feature. These steps include not training future versions of Bard on content from user emails or Google Docs, not allowing human reviewers to access users’ personal content, not selling the information to advertisers, and not storing all this data for long periods of time.

LEFFER: Ok, but what about Meta and its celebrity AI avatars?

BUSHWICK: Meta has said that, for now, it won’t use user content to train future versions of its AI…but that might be coming soon. So, privacy is still definitely a concern, and it goes beyond these companies. I mean, literal minutes before we started recording, we read the news that Amazon has announced it’s training a large language model on data that’s is going to include conversations recorded by Alexa.

LEFFER: So conversations that people have in their homes with their Alexa assistant.

BUSHWICK: Exactly.

LEFFER: That sounds so scary to me. I mean, in my mind, that's exactly what people have been afraid of with these home assistants for a long time, that they'd be listening, recording, and transmitting that data to somewhere that the person using it no longer has control over.

BUSHWICK: Yeah, anytime you let another service access information about you, you are opening up a new potential portal for leaks, and also for hacks.

LEFFER: It's completely unsettling. I mean, do you think that the benefits of any of these AIs outweigh the risks?

BUSHWICK: So, it's really hard to say right now. Google's AI integration, multimodal chat bots, and, I mean, just these large language models in general, they are all still in such early experimental stages of development. I mean, they still make a lot of mistakes, and they don't quite measure up to more specialized tools that have been around for longer. But they can do a whole lot all in one place, which is super convenient, and that can be a big draw.

LEFFER: Right, so they’re definitely still not perfect, and one of those imperfections: they’re still prone to hallucinating incorrect information, correct?

BUSHWICK: Yes, and that brings me to one last question about AI before we wrap up: Do eggs melt?

LEFFER: Well, according to an AI-generated search result gone viral last week, they do.

BUSHWICK: Oh, no.

LEFFER: Yeah, a screenshot posted on social media showed Google displaying a top search snippet that claimed, “an egg can be melted,” and then it went on to give instructions on how you might melt an egg. Turns out, that snippet came from a Quora answer generated by ChatGPT and boosted by Google’s search algorithm. It’s more of that AI inaccuracy in action, exacerbated by search engine optimization—though at least this time around it was pretty funny, and not outright harmful.

BUSHWICK: But Google and Microsoft – they’re both working to incorporate AI-generated content into their search engines. But this melted egg misinformation struck me because it’s such a perfect example of why people are worried about that happening.

LEFFER: Mmm…I think you mean eggs-ample.

BUSHWICK: Egg-zactly.

Spotify to Clone Podcasters' Voices Using AI, Translate Into Different Languages

Spotify to Clone Podcasters' Voices Using AI, Translate Into Different Languages | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Spotify is working with podcasters like Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett to release AI-generated translations of some podcast episodes.

Sep 26, 2023, 11:24 AM GMT+1Spotify is launching a new feature called "Voice Translations" powered by AI including ChatGPT.
The feature will replicate the voices of podcasters and translate them into different languages. Spotify said that this will create a more "authentic listening experience," for its users.

Spotify is rolling out a new AI feature mimicking the original voice of podcasters and translating them into additional languages for a more "authentic listening experience," the company announced Monday in a blog post.

The new feature, called Voice Translations, is powered by AI and matches the voice and style of the original speaker so it "sounds more personal and natural than traditional dubbing," according to the blog.

It also relies on OpenAI's new voice generation technology which enables ChatGPT to craft "realistic synthetic voices from just a few seconds of real speech," also just released on Monday.

"A podcast episode originally recorded in English can now be available in other languages while keeping the speaker's distinctive speech characteristics," per Spotify's blog.

Spotify is working with podcasters like Dax Shepard, Monica Padman, Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons and Steven Bartlett to produce voice translations for specific episodes in languages such as Spanish, French, and German.

The episodes will be available to both Spotify Premium and free users.

Bill Simmons, founder of the Spotify-owned podcast network The Ringer, hinted in May that Spotify also planned to use AI trained on the voices of hosts to generate targeted ads for users.

There have been mounting concerns in the entertainment industry about the impact of AI being used to clone the voices of musicians, actors, and presenters without their consent or providing financial compensation.

In April AI-generated songs using Canadian rapper Drake's voice went viral on social media, including a "collaboration" between him and The Weeknd, and another of him singing an Ice Spice song.

Actor and comedian Stephen Fry also recently said that an AI had ingested his readings of the "Harry Potter" books and subsequently recreated his voice.

BOULDER, CO (MARCH 5, 2024)
Disregarding their own widely publicized appeals for regulating and slowing implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), leading tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta are instead racing to evade regulation and incorporate AI into their platforms.

A new NEPC policy brief, Time for a Pause: Without Effective Public Oversight, AI in Schools Will Do More Harm Than Good, warns of the dangers of unregulated AI in schools, highlighting democracy and privacy concerns. Authors Ben Williamson of the University of Edinburgh, and Alex Molnar and Faith Boninger of the University of Colorado Boulder, examine the evidence and conclude that the proliferation of AI in schools jeopardizes democratic values and personal freedoms.

Public education is a public and private good that’s essential to democratic civic life. The public must, therefore, be able to provide meaningful direction over schools through transparent democratic governance structures. Yet important discussions about AI’s potentially negative impacts on education are being overwhelmed by relentless rhetoric promoting its purported ability to positively transform teaching and learning. The result is that AI, with little public oversight, is on the verge of becoming a routine and overriding presence in schools.

Years of warnings and precedents have highlighted the risks posed by the widespread use of pre-AI digital technologies in education, which have obscured decision-making and enabled student data exploitation. Without effective public oversight, the introduction of opaque and unproven AI systems and applications will likely exacerbate these problems.

The authors explore the harms likely if lawmakers and others do not step in with carefully considered regulations. Integration of AI can degrade teacher-student relationships, corrupt curriculum with misinformation, encourage student performance bias, and lock schools into a system of expensive corporate technology. Further, they contend, AI is likely to exacerbate violations of student privacy, increase surveillance, and further reduce the transparency and accountability of educational decision-making.

The authors advise that without responsible development and regulation, these opaque AI models and applications will become enmeshed in routine school processes. This will force students and teachers to become involuntary test subjects in a giant experiment in automated instruction and administration that is sure to be rife with unintended consequences and potentially negative effects. Once enmeshed, the only way to disentangle from AI would be to completely dismantle those systems.

The policy brief concludes by suggesting measures to prevent these extensive risks. Perhaps most importantly, the authors urge school leaders to pause the adoption of AI applications until policymakers have had sufficient time to thoroughly educate themselves and develop legislation and policies ensuring effective public oversight and control of its school applications.

Judicial Branch tackles interpreter shortage with remote technology

Judicial Branch tackles interpreter shortage with remote technology | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
"The CT Judicial Branch is meeting a changing demand for language access services with remote technology and a hiring push
Like many other institutions, the Interpreter and Translation Services unit of the Connecticut Judicial Branch is adjusting to a "new normal" after the pandemic. A key challenge is a shortage of qualified interpreters, which impacts their ability to serve non-English speaking individuals in court proceedings.
In response, the branch is using virtual remote interpreting technology and keeping up an ongoing push to find, hire and train qualified interpreters.

“It is a challenging process to be able to identify the candidates who have a full command of both languages, both written and orally,” said Program Manager Alejandra Donath. “It is a challenging, but also gratifying, process when we're able to identify those candidates and we're able to bring them in to work with us.”

She said that 3 percent of candidates that apply meet the minimum requirements and added that new interpreters are put through a mentoring and training process so that they can be appointed by the court and provide services within the branch. However, the search is complicated by a nationwide interpreter shortage where other agencies are also competing for the same pool of qualified individuals.
Changing demand for services
The unit’s drop in services during 2020 mirrors a statewide trend as lockdown orders temporarily shut down non-essential court proceedings until they could be safely reopened or shifted online.

The total number of services has also dropped since the pandemic, but demand for the number of languages has increased, according to a yearly data report. For example, in 2023, the total number of services was below those provided in 2015, but in nearly twice as many languages as 2015.
Donath explained that the unit has staff for Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese Mandarin, Bosnian and Croatian translation and contracts out for all other languages with providers that have passed the technical requirements for quality interpretation.
According to the yearly data reports, the high demand in services for Spanish speakers has increased during the past eight years. In the same time, demand for services in languages like Portuguese, Chinese Mandarin, French and Polish has generally decreased, although the demand for services in Arabic and Indo-Iranian languages has been increasing.

Using technology
Now that the unit is back to its pre-pandemic scheduling workflow, it is working on leveraging technology to help fill the gap left by the shortage, said Deputy Director Rich Loffredo. He said the unit's IT department came up with about 110 mobile carts all over the state with TVs, telephones and headsets that can retrofit a courtroom to have a virtual interpreter.
“Because of this shortage of interpreters, we've been exploring different ways of providing services remotely, and our chief court administrator charged us and our IT department to come up with a way that allowed for simultaneous interpreting remotely,” he said.

The carts were created by the IT department and are fitted with a TV, headsets and a connection to the court's speaker system. They have the ability to project the interpreter's voice around the courtroom as needed. With the cart, the interpreter can address the person with limited English individually on a headset, an aside between the person and their attorney or the whole courtroom.
Loffredo explained that interpreting at the start of the pandemic was done in a consecutive mode, starting and stopping for the interpreter to be able to repeat what was said. However, he said that the unit has received positive feedback on the technology in place to interpret simultaneously because it makes proceedings a lot shorter.
Remote interpreting "really does speed up the proceedings from that consecutive mode that we've been dealing with since the beginning of COVID," he said.

He added that some of the newer courthouses are already enabled for remote interpretation, but the older ones have technical limitations that make them harder to retrofit. However, he said that the branch is on its way to achieving the goal of having all courtrooms equipped for video remote interpreting. He said juvenile courts, housing courts, criminal courts are already equipped and are nearly done with family support magistrate courts.
