Make a Video Letter with Your Phone - Free Webinar July 12 | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
The National Writing Project, in partnership with a range of Educator Innovator leaders, is hosting a 2 month-long series focused on the ways that youth can be engaged in the upcoming presidential election around topics of interest and importance to them. July marks the second part of this series. In connection to the Letters to the Next President 2.0 project, we will explore media making, using historical primary sources for contemporary learning, and creating persuasive arguments that support productive discourse. We will emphasize ways that educators can take summer time to explore ways that youth might be engaged in these same opportunities and plan for how to integrate this work into their learning spaces this fall.

DHQ: Digital Humanities Quarterly: 2016

DHQ: Digital Humanities Quarterly: 2016 | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

Description by The Scout Report

"Over the past couple of decades, humanities scholars have identified various ways to use technology to archive, analyze, and share content relating to the Humanities - including English literature, history, and art. The Digital Humanities Quarterly is a free, peer reviewed journal published by the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO), an international consortium of Digital Humanities organizations. Now in its ninth year of publication, the journal publishes scholarly articles, book reviews, and the occasional editorial addressing such issues as student experience and the digitization of epigraphy. Readers will also find a complete special issue about comics (which includes an article by Nicholas Sousanis, who wrote his dissertation at Columbia Teacher's College as a 125-page comic with citations), and another special issue about feminism in the digital humanities."

A fantastic collection of resources, including very well done teachers' guides, to many of Masterpiece's best works. Yes, it's all very British and (for the most part) Caucasian, but it can be used in a comparative way with expressions from other cultures.

The Power of Cautionary Questions: Neil Gaiman on Ray Bradbury’s ‘Fahrenheit 451,’ Why We Read, and How Speculative Storytelling Enlarges Our Humanity

The Power of Cautionary Questions: Neil Gaiman on Ray Bradbury’s ‘Fahrenheit 451,’ Why We Read, and How Speculative Storytelling Enlarges Our Humanity | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
“The important thing,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in contemplating the cultural role of speculative fiction and the task of its writer, “is not to offer any specific hope of betterment but, by offering an imagined but persuasive alternative reality, to dislodge my mind, and so the reader’s mind, from the lazy, timorous habit of thinking that the way we live now is the only way people can live.” In doing so, she argued, imaginative storytelling can intercept the inertia of oppressive institutions, perilous social mores, and other stagnations of progress that contract our scope of the possible.

The birth of virtual reality as an art form

The birth of virtual reality as an art form | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Chris Milk uses innovative technologies to make personal, interactive, human stories. Accompanied by Joshua Roman on cello and McKenzie Stubbert on piano, Milk traces his relationship to music and art — from the first moment he remembers putting on headphones to his current work creating breakthrough virtual reality projects. VR is the last medium for storytelling, he says, because it closes the gap between audience and storyteller. To illustrate, he brought the TED audience together in the world's largest collective VR experience. Join them and take part in this interactive talk by getting a Google Cardboard and downloading the experience at with.in/TED.

I have found a new way to watch TV, and it changes everything

I have found a new way to watch TV, and it changes everything | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Now that tools are making it increasingly easy to alter the flow of how we watch films and television, viewers will also have power to change the plot and the characters of a show to suit their own tastes. We should look forward to a future that involves more cross-pollination, more crazy fan-theories, more creative misunderstandings, all of it enabled by new ways of consuming television, whether that means binge-watching, surfing clips on social media or even watching on fast-forward. We risk transforming, perhaps permanently, the ways in which our brains perceive people, time, space, emotion. And isn’t that marvelous?
Jim Lerman's insight:

This is seriously worth thinking about, at least on some level.

Writing project features mTechnology, Team-Based Learning

Writing project features mTechnology, Team-Based Learning | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Teaching first-semester freshmen presents some unique challenges. You are teaching them not only your subject, but also how to be college students. One of the best strategies I have found is to begin with a collaborative project that asks them to research their new home: the campus.

Outcomes
I designed this project for a composition course, but it can be adapted to any discipline because its primary outcomes are teaching students how to collaborate, think critically about their audience, develop 21st-century literacy skills, and communicate effectively.

Seth Godin on Vulnerability, Creative Courage, and How to Dance with the Fear: A Children’s Book for Grownups

Seth Godin on Vulnerability, Creative Courage, and How to Dance with the Fear: A Children’s Book for Grownups | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
At the 2014 HOW conference, Debbie Millman, host of the excellent interview show Design Matters and a remarkable mind, sat down with the prolific Seth Godin to discuss courage, anxiety, change, creative integrity, and why he got thrown out of Milton Glaser’s class. She used an unusual book of Godin’s as the springboard for their wide-ranging conversation: V is for Vulnerable: Life Outside the Comfort Zone (public library) — an alphabet book for grownups illustrated by Hugh MacLeod with a serious and rather urgent message about what it means and what it takes to dream, to live with joy, to find our purpose and do fulfilling work.

I had the pleasure of seeing and recording the conversation — transcribed highlights below.

Existential Therapy from the Universe: Physicist Sean Carroll on How Poetic Naturalism Illuminates Our Human Search for Meaning

Existential Therapy from the Universe: Physicist Sean Carroll on How Poetic Naturalism Illuminates Our Human Search for Meaning | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
“We are — as far as we know — the only part of the universe that’s self-conscious,” the poet Mark Strand marveled in his beautiful meditation on the artist’s task to bear witness to existence, adding: “We could even be the universe’s form of consciousness. We might have come along so that the universe could look at itself… It’s such a lucky accident, having been born, that we’re almost obliged to pay attention.” Susan Sontag, at the end of her fully lived and intensely meaningful life, articulated the same idea in considering what it means to be a good human being: “To be a moral human being is to pay, be obliged to pay, certain kinds of attention.”

Scientists are rightfully reluctant to ascribe a purpose or meaning to the universe itself but, as physicist Lisa Randall has pointed out, “an unconcerned universe is not a bad thing — or a good one for that matter.” Where poets and scientists converge is the idea that while the universe itself isn’t inherently imbued with meaning, it is in this self-conscious human act of paying attention that meaning arises.
Jim Lerman's insight:

Maria Popova often writes about matters of life and art. In this piece, she performs a thrilling act of scholarship, inquiry, and interpretation into life's meaning  -- building an assemblage of insight that dazzles in its breadth and precision.

"This writing guide from Bowdoin College professor Patrick Rael focuses its intellectual vigor on "Reading, Writing, and Researching for History." Designed for undergraduate students, the material covered here may also be helpful for advanced high school students, graduate students, and lifelong learners. The depth and breadth of the guide is noteworthy; Professor Rael guides his readers through sections on Reading, Historical Arguments, Research, Structuring Your Paper, Writing Your Paper, Working with Sources, Editing and Evaluation, and the Writing Model. Each section is broken down further into subheadings that can be downloaded as freestanding PDFs. For instance, readers will find a handy Paper-Writing Checklist within the Editing and Evaluation section or suggestions for How to Read a Primary Source in the Reading section. Whether browsing the guide in its entirety or selecting specific sections of interest, the material here may provide a handy tool for students and teachers alike."

Storytelling in VR & Mixed Reality with SPACES - Road to VR

Storytelling in VR & Mixed Reality with SPACES - Road to VR | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Brad Herman & Shiraz Akmal recently left DreamWorks Animation to raise $3 million to start SPACES Inc., which is a virtual reality and mixed reality company focusing on storytelling for different brands including Microsoft, NBCUniversal, and The Hettema Group. Brad founded the DreamLab at DreamWorks in order to focus on developing content for mobile and cutting edge immersive technologies like VR, and so he’s been intimately involved with exploring storytelling in VR for the past couple of years. I had a chance to catch up with him at SVVR 2016, where he shared his thoughts about storytelling in VR and mixed reality, how to deal with non-compliant users, how he thinks that VR differs from film & broadway, and one of their first mixed reality projects of Big Blue Bubble’s My Singing Monsters.
