Gullah-language Bible now on audio CDs

More than three decades after translators began putting the words of the New Testament into Gullah, everyone can now hear those words in the creole language spoken by slaves and their descendants along the sea islands of the nation's Southeast coast.
"Healin fa de Soul," — "Healing for the Soul" — a five-CD set of readings from the Gullah Bible, including a dramatized version of the Gospel of John, was released this month at the Penn Center, founded in 1862 as one of the nation's first freedmen's schools after Union troops captured the area during the Civil War.

Lesson 18: Steering your translation career | Marta Stelmaszak

Would you be able to drive to your destination if your car had no steering wheel? You have it all: a strong engine, enough fuel, comfortable chairs, but for a steering wheel. How far would you go? Would you even start? When would you crash? It’s the same with our careers in translation. If we don’t have a steering wheel, we’ll never reach our goals. Here comes a list of essentials to do to be in charge of your own professional development.

Basqueresearch.com: News - Sarrionandia’s other creative side

oseba Sarrionandia is not only a writer, he is also a prolific translator. Or to be more precise, a re-creator, since what he produces are not faithful translations. This is how it has been put by Aiora Jaka, who has done her thesis on the basis of the works which this author has translated into Basque: “He says that the translator takes the original work and creates on the basis of it. He equates the translator with the original writer.” Jaka has taken the lid off the other side of the author, when focussing on his translations into Basque in which she has identified about 50 original languages. The thesis is entitled Itzulpenari buruzko gogoeta eta itzulpen-praktika Joseba Sarrionandiaren lanetan (Reflection on translation and its practice in the work of Joseba Sarrionandia). Jaka is the first person to obtain both an undergraduate degree and a PhD in Translation at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

5 Bilingual Data Resources That Work With Your CAT Tool.

The use of translation memories has become somewhat of a standard in our industry. If you work for agencies they are now expecting that you at least have a command of TRADOS. Although I have used TRADOS, and see that our productivity increases using it, I don’t personally own a copy of the software yet. I won’t be discussing about TM programs per se, I believe too many articles and blogs have discussed the pro’s and con’s of it. Rather, I would discuss the resources that can work well with the use of a TM program or CAT tool or use as a standalone resource. They are large amounts of bilingual data (corpora) extracted from websites in all particular areas. The reason I love these resources is that they are not the result of machine translation but rather large sources of data that have been translated by translators in a specialized field.
