Rewriting the Catholic mass, and correcting translation errors

...If you ever wondered why the Catholic Church was originally against vernacular translations of the Bible, this is why. Little, stupid stuff that changes the meaning of things.

So, now the line is "Lord, I am not worthy to have you under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed."

Keep in mind, that in the previous translation of the Catholic mass there was never one mention of the word "soul," which seems odd....

BusinessDay - Babylon sees ‘Arab Spring’ boost

BABYLON, an Israeli developer of translation and dictionary software, predicts that sales will continue to surge on demand for language products in the Arab world and Brazil, CEO Alon Carmeli says.

"We have reported a growth rate in revenue of nearly 80% in dollar terms since the beginning of the year and we expect a similar growth going forward," Mr Carmeli said in a recent interview at Babylon’s offices in Or Yehuda.

The software developer, named after the Tower of Babel biblical story about the creation of different languages, says it has more than 100-million users and operates in about 200 markets. It provides translation for 75 languages, including the newly added Vietnamese and Swahili.

The shares have gained 72% this year, giving Babylon a market value of 387-million shekels ($103m). The benchmark TA-25 index has dropped 19%.

Babylon is boosting marketing efforts in Brazil, where it plans to capitalise on translation needs in a country that will host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Edith Grossman on translation

Yale University Press launched its “Why X Matters” series in 2010, each volume designed to present “a concise argument for the continuing relevance of an important person or idea”. So far the series contains volumes on the US Constitution, architecture, poetry, the Dreyfus affair, the philosopher Hannah Arendt, and the religious thinker Reinhold Niebuhr. It also contains a volume on translation published in 2010 and written by the American literary translator Edith Grossman, who has translated such writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and Carlos Fuentes. Strangely, this concise book left me with the impression that Grossman was not so much answering the question as to why translation matters, but also and perhaps especially the question as to why translation matters to her. This is not a bad thing, however. On the contrary. It’s precisely because it does matter to her that she makes a convincing case for translation in general.

Wycliffe needs personnel to work in the Arts - Mission Network News

One way that Wycliffe Bible Translators ensures that the message of their newly-translated Scripture projects gets across is to incorporate it into more media than just a book. Many cultures praise God in many different ways, and Wycliffe has found several effective methods for getting Scripture into those worship styles.

Wycliffe trains World Arts Specialists to team up with local Christians to take newly-translated Scripture and incorporate the truth of God's Word in each local culture's performing and visual arts.

Tips for Translators: Time

The pressure that many translators face today is the result of the chain of events that lead to a translation assignment. Translators are commonly called in at the end of a project to translate the sum total of the material that has been generated; contract specifications, training manuals or user guides are just a few examples.

Going Native: Ethnography in User Experience | Blogos

With over 620 million mobile connections as of September 2011, Africa has overtaken Latin America to become the second largest mobile market in the world, after Asia. Mobile usage in Africa has important developmental consequences too. But that’s not all. Just like accessibility requirements make life better for everyone so too can the needs of developing markets result in user experience improvements in more fortunate regions, as M-Pesa shows, in this case making mobile payments–through Near Field Communication (NFC)–seem all the more natural.

Said it before, but we don’t hear enough about the role of user experience in our industry, or about cultural, localization or translation issues in Africa. We should be wary of treating Africa as one homogenous economic market though, as this excellent GMS World report illustrates, and remember the range of languages and complex political and cultural dynamics at work there....
