...at the Mystic Bascule Bridge: EUGENE A. NIDA

Celebrating the life of a distinguished linguist and translator may seem trivial to some people. Today in New York City Eugene Nida's life will be celebrated. He was born November 11, 1914 and died August 25, 2011. In an ever more complex, connected world there may be no more important task than translation.

The United States is only beginning to feel the enormity of the issue of translation since English is such a dominate language throughout the world. Many Americans think of translation as a bit of a nuisance and expense. Nuisance in that if people are going to come to America they need to learn English. Expense in that schools (among many private and public entities) need to deal with communicating to people who do not know Englsih well (the Los Angeles Public Schools have over 250 languages spoken by children attending their schools). It takes money to teach those kids and translation is a very important part of the process.

timestranscript.com - Serious court case delayed by translation squabble | by craig babstock - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada

Fowler is upset because the Crown's office originally agreed to provide the translation, but later refused. During an April hearing he accused the Crown of going back on its word and trying to force his client to hire another lawyer. He said he was considering filing a complaint under the Official Languages Act.

Prosecutor Marc Savoie responded that the accused in this case understands French, so there is no need for the Crown to translate the documents. After all, it was Bossé who chose to hire a unilingual English lawyer.

Savoie said a recent court decision out of Bathurst dealt with this issue and supported the Crown's position.

"The guidelines indicate the Crown does not have to translate the documents when the accused is a Francophone and can understand the documents, he just hired a unilingual lawyer," said Savoie. "The disadvantage is the making of the client, not the state."

Face à un besoin grandissant d'apprendre la langue chinoise motivé par une forte main d’œuvre chinoise qui s'adonne à toutes sortes d'activités économiques dans pas moins de 633 sociétés chinoises et les déplacements fréquents des importateurs algériens en Chine pour la conclusion de transactions avec leurs homologues chinois, des cours de langue chinoise sont désormais dispensés dans certaines écoles de langues étrangères.

Harper's anglo appointees get tongues wagging in language debate

his week, the man poised to become Canada's next auditor general found himself swept up in a debate that is, in some ways, as old as the country itself.

After learning that Michael Ferguson cannot speak French, opposition parties dug in to try to prevent him from taking the job, defending what they call a quintessential Canadian value: bilingualism.

But supporters are calling Ferguson's selection a ''victory for common sense'' after years of what they characterize as unequal hiring practices that favour an ability to speak French over an ability to do the job

Voice-Over

Voice-over is the process of recording a voice reading the translation of an audio or video file, while preserving the original audio or video in the background. This requires translation of the original audio or speech, a talented voice-over actor to read and express the emotions in the source material, recording equipment and software, and one or more sound engineers to ensure that the voice-over audio is placed properly and that sound effects (music, etc.) are arranged to accurately mimic the source material.
