Deltic Announces Preliminary 4Q and Y2011 Results | Timberland Investment | Scoop.it

Deltic Timber Corporation's President and Chief Executive Officer, Ray C. Dillon, announced today that financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011 were a loss of $.2 million, $.02 a share, which compares to net income of $1.3 million, $.10 a share, in the corresponding quarter of 2010. The decrease is due mainly to a reduced pine sawtimber harvest volume sold at a lower average per-ton sales price, combined with the sales of fewer acres of non-strategic hardwood bottomland.

Timber inventory a guessing game, critics charge

Timber inventory a guessing game, critics charge | Timberland Investment | Scoop.it

Without an accurate survey of the resource, say stakeholders, B.C.’s Ministry of Forests does not know how much is available to harvest and how much needs to be replanted...

...

A third of the government’s inventory of timber lands is at least 17 years out of date, the Ministry of Forests confirms. That makes it impossible to accurately establish the so-called falldown – the point at which mills in the B.C. Interior start to run out of logs after processing today’s pine-beetle-killed timber.

Jobs vs. environment at Oregon legislature

Jobs vs. environment at Oregon legislature | Timberland Investment | Scoop.it

The timber bill springs from frustration over the continued deadlock in federal forests, which make up 60 percent of Oregon's timberland but provide only 12 percent of the harvest. State forests, though only 4 percent of the land, provide 10 percent of the annual harvest. Rather than wait for a solution on federal land, advocates say the state should increase the flow of logs to mills, retain jobs and support rural communities. Industry, rural officials and union leaders back the bill.

...

The bill would set timber harvests at an unsustainable level, said Ivan Maluski of the Sierra Club. "It's characterized as a major jobs bill, but to us it looks more like an ideological bill," he said.

Pope Resources Reports Fourth Quarter Net Income of $2.3 Million

Pope Resources Reports Fourth Quarter Net Income of $2.3 Million | Timberland Investment | Scoop.it

“The big story for 2011 was strong demand from China for logs and lumber,” said David L. Nunes, President and CEO. “We were well positioned to capitalize on this surge in demand since all of our tree farms are tributary to export log ports. Based on both new properties acquired by our second timber fund in 2010 and significant amounts of deferred harvest volume from 2008-2010, we had a record harvest year in 2011 at 90 million board feet (MMBF). In addition, we enjoyed a 17% increase in our average realized log price based on both export demand and greater competition in domestic markets where many of the mills benefited by the exporting of lumber to China. These factors combined for a very strong year in terms of cash flow generation.”

Fee Timber operating income for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $5.5 million compared to $1.7 million for the fourth quarter of 2010. This tripling of operating income was due to the combined impact of a 164% increase in harvest volume, which increased from 11 MMBF in 2010 to 29 MMBF in 2011, and a 17% boost in average realized log price, which increased from $481 per thousand board feet (MBF) in 2010 to $565 per MBF in 2011.
