Funds managed by New Forests have taken a controlling interest in the 46,000 hectare Auspine estate. New Forests' Australia New Zealand Forest Fund is the lead investor in the transaction, which includes the land and trees of the 64-property estate, formerly owned and managed by Gunns Limited. The plantation estate will be managed by Sydney-based New Forests, an investment manager specializing in sustainable forestry and associated environmental markets.

AAA, an alternative investment advocacy firm, has always seen Brazil as a great place to invest in commodities, such as timber, and in ethical and social funds, through impact investing routes. However, the world is expected to start investing cash in Brazil in droves thanks to the latest figures from the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).
“Although last year’s 2.7 per cent growth wasn’t enormous, in the grand scale of things, Brazil continues to grow economically when many other top economies are still teetering on the edge of recession” explained AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson.
He added, “There has rarely been a better time to invest in emerging economies and investors who want to diversify their portfolios could not do better than investing in sustainable forestry in Brazil.

Second Minister for Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan yesterday led a delegation of 70 members consisting of state dignitaries and major players in the timber and other industries here on a week-long trip to Chennai and Mumbai. ... India has become the main timber importer of Sarawak where its volume has already overtaken the likes of countries such as Japan and Korea which used to be the state’s traditional importers of timber and crops.

The inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on biomass rode roughshod over the concerns of the timber sector on mass burning of wood for energy, according to industry representatives attending. ... Following the meeting, the TTF, Wood Panel Industries Federation and Confor issued a joint statement. It said that government forecasts put the demand for wood fuel of biomass plants currently in planning at 80-100 million tonnes by 2030. This is eight times the UK's 2010 harvest.

...lumber supplies are slowly tightening as mills shut down or cut back on production one by one, and yet lumber brokers and builders are finding credit hard to come by as the warmer than usual late winter has allowed the building industry to warm up a little earlier than usual. Result: a slight upward price pressure on lumber thus far this year, even as the slowdown in the Chinese economy reduces their lumber imports.

Forest Minister is under fire over record log exports from the B.C. ... Total coastal log exports increased to a record 5.87 million cubic meters in 2011, up from 3.86 million in 2010, according to forest ministry figures. That includes logs exported from private land, which are regulated by Ottawa. About 20 per cent of logs from Crown land in coastal B.C. are going to export.

GOP presidential candidates aren’t talking much about the environment -- unless the debate is about energy independence and opening more oil and gas fields. But as GOP hopefuls turn their attention to Oregon, they may find that Republican voters want to hear about other natural resources, too, like timber and water.

Steve Stinson sees it all the time: A family reluctant to tackle the complex world of estate planning, afraid they’re too dysfunctional to make it work.
Stinson said the average age of forestland patriarchs and matriarchs is pushing 75, likely to mean a lot of land changing hands relatively soon.
“If we can’t figure out how to make this work,” Stinson said, “we’re going to see a lot of forestland shifting to nonforest uses.”

When a massive earthquake destroyed San Francisco in 1906, timber mills in the Northwest went into high gear. They supplied the wood needed to rebuild. Last year, many in the timber industry predicted the Tohoku quake in Japan would cause a jump in northwest lumber exports. ...

The Green Energy Opportunity Fund will take an equity ownership in all of the projects, which will have third party operators, Weisz said, and will also grow their own feedstock. “The first four projects we’re doing we will own the land and harvest our own fuel stock, which will be eucalyptus and cottonwood trees. Each project will have 10,000-12,000 acres, so everything is controlled and we won’t be subject to market conditions.” ...

We technicians know that price will lead the fundamentals and so perhaps the strength in the forest sector is telling us two things – a recovery in the US housing sector and increased global demand for lumber.
