This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program. We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) . Enjoy!!
Some folks are using UAS for commercial purposes without much concern about the FAA's regulatory powers. As long as they keep their UAS below 400 feet and away from people, they feel like they are safe from citation. Are they? Should they be acting that way? How do we know that they are acting in the public interest?
How is a rare strain of malaria spreading near cities in Southeast Asia? That's the question that's been puzzling a team of scientists. And they're using drones to find the answer.

Cool application of UAV technology in parasitology research!
The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center is a national partnership of organizations working to improve marine technical education and in this way help to prepare America's future workforce for ocean occupations. Headquartered at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) in Monterey, California, the MATE Center has been funded as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Center of Excellence since 1997.

Both our Triggerfish and Pufferfish are MATE ROVs. Really cool program and their competitions are amazing!

As Christmas is on the horizon and shoppers turn to Google and enter the phrase “I want to buy” it should be of no surprise that “Drone” has joined regulars such as “house,” “car,” and “stock” and even replaced the word “gun” to enter the top four of searches on peoples wish lists in 2014.

This is a nice run down of various drone-related issues and popular press occurrences.

The emperor penguins of Antarctica are adorable. They're also pretty skittish when humans come around to collect data. Researchers at the University of Strasbourg have a solution: a penguin rover.

As robots look more and more like things other than robots, a host of behavioral ecology doors can open up.
Virgin Galactic fatal crash sends tremors through commercial space industry
PIRatE Lab's insight:
There are many reasons to develop remotely piloted systems. While we are still in need of physically going to places ourselves at times, the coast and mechanics of doing so can be daunting. We should keep exploring and pushing, but Remotely Piloted Systems can help get us to some places and illuminate some things more cheaply and with less risk.

Considering how much you hear about drones these days, it's surprising we haven't seen more marketing stunts using remote-controlled hoverbots. But Paramount Pictures pulled off an interesting trick this weekend by using glowing quadrotors to create a Star Trek logo over London.

Ugly flier, but interesting idea. I wonder when we'll be able to 3D-print biodegradable materials to construct our own structures like this.
