Remotely Piloted Systems
This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program.  We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) .  Enjoy!!

A Military-Grade Drone That Can Be Printed Anywhere | WIRED

We have 3-D printed keys, guns and shoes—now a research team at the University of Virginia has created a 3D printed UAV drone for the Department of Defense. In the works for three years, the aircraft, no bigger than a remote-controlled plane, can carry a 1.5-pound payload. If it crashes or needs a design tweak…
PIRatE Lab's insight:

We are in a new era when we can print our own drones.

With her right hand, my 8-year-old daughter, Kalian, presses the red-hot soldering iron against the circuit board. With her left hand, she guides a thin, tin wire until it's pressing against both the circuit board and the tip of the iron.

The notion of maker spaces and actually building things can be a powerful motivator for STEM and other subjects as kids are in their formative stages.

Building drones is but one aspect of this movement.

A narrow debate over the LAPD's proposed, limited use of a pair of unmanned aircraft — popularly known as drones — is prompting a broader community conversation about the tension between technology and privacy in a city where police have not always traversed that boundary well.

Jason Miller's insight:

Some folks are using UAS for commercial purposes without much concern about the FAA's regulatory powers.  As long as they keep their UAS below 400 feet and away from people, they feel like they are safe from citation.  Are they?  Should they be acting that way?  How do we know that they are acting in the public interest?

Virgin Galactic fatal crash sends tremors through commercial space industry
PIRatE Lab's insight:

There are many reasons to develop remotely piloted systems.  While we are still in need of physically going to places ourselves at times, the coast and mechanics of doing so can be daunting.  We should keep exploring and pushing, but Remotely Piloted Systems can help get us to some places and illuminate some things more cheaply and with less risk.
