Remotely Piloted Systems
This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program.  We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) .  Enjoy!!

Delivering pizza, making films ... now safety fears grow over use of drones - The Guardian

Delivering pizza, making films ... now safety fears grow over use of drones - The Guardian | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
As companies scramble to discover new uses for small unmanned aircraft, critics fear changes to laws will ignore privacy issues
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Here it comes.  These mounting fears are legitimate, fueled in part by the fact responsible users are not being allowed to fly but every member of the public with a credit card can.

Drone to scan for ancient Amazonia

Drone to scan for ancient Amazonia | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it

Scientists are to scan the Amazon forest in Brazil to look for evidence of occupation by ancient civilisations.

A drone will be sent up with a laser instrument to peer through the canopy for earthworks that were constructed thousands of years ago.

The UK-led project is trying to determine how big these communities were, and to what degree they altered the landscape.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

LiDAR surveys are a classic instrument to stick on a UAV.  In this case we can den use it to get insight into ancient land use in a very hard to see part of the world.

Will Bureaucracy Keep The U.S. Drone Industry Grounded? | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
Tough federal aviation rules and public backlash against drones have raised worries that the U.S. unmanned aerial vehicle industry will be left behind foreign competitors. Developers say the U.S. light drone industry is being overtaken by manufacturers in Israel and Australia.
Jonathan Fausto's insight:

Do we want UAV companies to develop their units elsewhere ? Again everything is about safety.

The FAA's Drone Ban at the Super Bowl Is Absurd

The FAA's Drone Ban at the Super Bowl Is Absurd | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
You may have heard about the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) quietly declaring that this year's Super Bowl will be a "no drone zone." You may not have heard just how big that no drone zone will be. It's 60 miles wide. The no drone zone is larger than the city of Phoenix. Seems a little bit absurd, huh?

No roads? There’s a drone for that | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
A billion people in the world lack access to all-season roads. Could the structure of the internet provide a model for how to reach them? Andreas Raptopoulos of Matternet thinks so. He introduces a new type of transportation system that uses electric autonomous flying machines to deliver medicine, food, goods and supplies wherever they are needed.
