Back to the future: What if the 'mass media' era was just an accident of history? | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it
We are used to thinking of a “mass media” market made up of large newspapers and TV networks as the normal state of affairs in media, but what if that was just a historical anomaly?

Via Guillaume Decugis
Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, May 11, 2013 7:11 PM

Interesting post by Mathew Ingram. It reminds me of a similar observation Mick Jagger made about recorded music. He noted that artists only made money from records from roughly 1970 to 1997: in the 60's and before, mass consumption hadn't developed enough for artists to get enough leverage against their record labels while after 1997, piracy and digital music dramtically change the whole recorded music model.

For all Content Industries including Music, Movies and Media, the anormal situation might therefore not as much be what technology did in the last few years than what it did a century ago.

When it comes to media content, technology improvements have known 2 distinct eras, one of which very recent:

- from the invention of writing until the Web 2.0, progresses have primarily focused on offering greater and greater distribution : the book, the printing press, the rotary printing press, radio, TV and event the Web 1.0 all gave access to a wider audience to a small group of content creators;

- but from the social Web's beginning, we started to talk about user-generated content and everyone could potentially become a publisher: with blogs and social media, content creation and then even content curation itself are being democratized.

So I don't know if I agree with Ingram's point that historically mass media didn't exist (if the Bible isn't mass media, what is?) but we're certainly not coming back to a 1-to-many broadcast model.

Martin Debattista's curator insight, May 13, 2013 3:34 PM

Social media, personal as it is, still depends on global companies doing business on a global level. Facebook with its almost 1,000 million users? Twitter? Google? Aren't they in the field to make a profit?

Therese Torris's comment, March 14, 2013 5:36 AM
Fact is that Google has so far escaped antitrust laws (in particular laws around anti-competitive bundling) by arguing that the service is free and used on a voluntary basis. But in Europe for example where Google has a 90%+ market share not content publisher can afford not to write "for" Google, it's as simple as that. Regarding searches in quote marks, they don't deliver the Long Tail (i.e. the searches most relevant to the keywords as concepts) but only content that contains the quoted phrase. That is very different.
Laura Brown's comment, March 14, 2013 1:54 PM
Therese, if you think beyond Google - how do you find content online? I don't do a Google search for most of the content which I add to Scoop.it. I find it through channels I already have set up, like feeds from the sites I like, the sites I usually find good things through like Flickr, which is itself a network of content for me to search or randomly look through. I don't care about writing for Google because I don't rely on Google to find the content I read. Google is a bot - when I do use Google it is just a place to start. I branch out and find much more interesting and relevant content by going from one site to the next. I find better results in the sidebar of a blog than I do from Google. Whatever "market share" you pin on Google - that is exactly what it is a 'market'. A market is mostly a bunch of marketers selling their wares/ services. If you have something to sell open a shop on Etsy (for example) and post a few things along with a link to your site where you sell more. When I actually want to buy something I look at online shops, I don't search Google unless I know the name of the site but don't want to bother typing in the link.

How Writing and the Printed Word Rewired Our Brains | tech graffiti | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

By Yvonne McArthur

"The written word can seem a little old hat compared to the wonders of the digital world, but it was truly revolutionary. In fact, access to writing and books not only completely altered the world we live in, but changed the way we think and perceive. In his book The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture, pastor and former adman Shane Hipps mentions four ways in which writing rewired our brains. Print and access to books made us more individualistic, more capable of abstract thought, more objective, and more linear in our thinking. Read on to find out how.?
