Andrew Sullivan Claims His Blog Is Now More Profitable Than The Daily Beast

Andrew Sullivan's enormously popular blog, The Dish, just released some info on its earnings. Allegedly, it's more profitable than The Daily Beast--which Sullivan quit in favor of turning his blog into an independent media entity. For Sullivan, this was perhaps a very smart move.

PBS Idea Lab spoke to Sullivan for their Mediatwits web television program. The commentator and blogger claimed to PBS's Mark Glaser that he raised more revenue in the seven months since he went independent than the Daily Beast has raised in the past 2.5 years. Sullivan bought up his earnings in the middle of a conversation about Nate Silver ditching the New York Times for ESPN....

Tumblr Stumbles, Tries To Right Itself, Banks Left | The Marketing Whore

Tumblr Stumbles, Tries To Right Itself, Banks Left | The Marketing Whore | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

On July 16, 2013, Tumblr creator David Karp was on The Colbert Report. During the short interview segment, Karp and host Stephen Colbert discussed a number of issues ~ including the naked, and sometimes fornicating, elephant in the room: porn on Tumblr.

...

But then, just two days later, Tumblr instituted a new policy about adult content. Along with the pre-Yahoo sale attempts to exclude search engine indexing of adult Tumblr bogs, Tumblr’s new rules meant that adult-rated blogs and their posts would no longer show up in site tags; the former preventing blogs from being found off-site, the latter keeping blogs from being searched and found on Tumblr itself.

Obviously, this lead to quite the reaction from Tumblr users.

Adult content is always the wet elephant in the room on any web network. They all let the adult content start, as long as it keeps quiet and no one starts a fuss about it. If anything changes the adult content becomes controversial (even though it was quiet and ignored for years). Kind of an immature attitude. People obviously want porn - we are just supposed to be ashamed of it while telling everyone how natural and good sex is.

Content Curation Success Hinges On Objectivity, Bridging the Information Gap

Content Curation Success Hinges On Objectivity, Bridging the Information Gap | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

Content curation is often described as a product of the Digital Age, but earlier forms of news aggregation were already being practiced in the early 90s.“Content curation has been around for years,” explained Michael Kolowich, CEO of KnowledgeVision. “But the evolution of it as a thought leadership, expertise-establishing marketing engine is actually fairly recent.”

Kolowich was the CEO of Individual Incorporated and one of the leading figures behind early news aggregation. Individual Incorporated initially distributed its newsletter, First, through fax machines, then email and finally on online once the World Wide Web took off in the mid-90s.

Today, content curation is not just restricted to media outlets. In conjunction with the growing trend of marketing teams acting as publishers, a diverse array of businesses have been using content curation to position themselves as industry leaders.

How Do You Properly Compensate Content Creators When Content Curation Is The New King?

How Do You Properly Compensate Content Creators When Content Curation Is The New King? | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

"The curator is getting more cred for recognizing good content than the creator is for making good content."

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Thought provoking, however, montetization of curation is still very limited. Scoop. It & others offer no means for monetization at all. Like content creation, & most everything on the net, compensation for cuation is still a giant question mark.

Robin Good's curator insight, July 21, 2013 4:31 PM

Tara Hunt, has an interesting article spotlighting the fast growing importance that curators are gradually gaining on the Internet and on the subsequent need to find ways for properly compensating original content creators.

She writes: "...while creators are necessary and amazing, curators are the ones raking in the dough.

I was alerted today by a friend that a video that Carlos and I made for Vine that had become super popular (over 118,000 likes + 77,000 Re-vines) was featured on a Facebook page called Best Vines and making its way around (with over 230,000 likes + 46,000 shares). The page owner lifted the content off of Vine and reposted it on his own page (no credit back to the original). This page has over 6.2M likes.

Now, this video of Ridley took us all of 30 seconds to make and we had no idea it would ‘go viral’, but for people like Will Sasso who appears to make it his full-time gig to make entertaining, engaging content on Vine and other places, this would probably be a bit of a violation.

The curator is getting more cred for recognizing good content than the creator is for making good content."

And she is definitely right.

But as she correctly points out, there are already effective solutions in place, such as the YouTube authorship claiming facility which allows for original creators to digitally mark their own creations while giving full permission to curators to leverage and re-distribute them. This YouTube approach is the one that makes it possible for content creators to receive a share of the advertising revenue coming to YouTube, even when their clips are curated and played back on other sites.

The opportunity is there, not just for textual content, but also for video, music, photography and all of their sub-categories to be curated and monetized for the benefit of everyone.

Insightful. 8/10

I’m not saying that in some reverse-psychology, “this is a test,” I’m-being-superficially-discouraging-but-really-think-you-will-make-it sense. I’m saying it in the “you will try and are far more likely to fail than to succeed” sense. In the time it took you to read the last paragraph some 48-year old was laid off by The Village Voice, and they’re smarter than you and have lived ten times what you’ve lived and can write so much better than you I actually almost feel bad for you, and now they’re on the same job market trying to scramble for the same shitty 10-cents-a-word gig recapping a show about couponing for the AV Club in the hopes that they can bang out some soul-destroying tedious bullshit so that a pack of talentless losers in the comments can pick their words apart from the safety of their beige plastic cubicles as they try to distract themselves with pop culture for long enough to keep their all-devouring self-hatred at bay. You might get that gig over them but if so it’s only because you’re young and cheap and stupid and the scuzzy editor thinks he might be able to fuck you after the Christmas party.

Or is it because Facebook FB -1.54% is changing the ad business, or because Twitter and Linkedin are changing the news business. Day by day, the big social sites look and act more like media companies, delivering all manner of content and advertising. Next up: with a combined audience of 1 billion, what role will Yahoo YHOO -0.91%, a portal, and Tumblr, a social blogging network, play in this media puzzle?

One thing is clear: news organizations and their journalists must jump into this free-for-all — or be hopelessly left behind.

12 Reasons Why Hitting Publish is Only the Beginning of Content Marketing

12 Reasons Why Hitting Publish is Only the Beginning of Content Marketing | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

Excellent tips for enhanced blog success... Most of us think our job is done after we hit the “Publish” button on WordPress. We take a deep breath, sit back in our chair, and congratulate ourselves on another article well done. Then we go back to pulling out what’s left of our hair, worrying about how to build more links. While we pull out our hair, though, we miss the Penguin and Panda memo: Content Marketing IS link building. By now you should already understand the limitless value of high quality content. I hope you understand that publishing lots of low or medium quality articles won’t help and that buying links or joining blog networks will only result in grief in the short or long term. The article you’ve just published should be full of actionable “gems” that will answer questions that your buyer personas are asking about your brand, industry or service. You’ve given them something of supreme value. And now the real work begins. Your job is not done after you publish your post. Publishing marks the beginning of the most important aspect of content creation: outreach and promotions. 12 Steps to take after you have written a new blog post....

Secrets deciphered as ancient Maya script meets the modern Internet

Secrets deciphered as ancient Maya script meets the modern Internet | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

Researchers began decoding the glyphic language of the ancient Maya long ago, but the Internet is helping them finish the job and write the history of the enigmatic Mesoamerican civilization.

For centuries, scholars understood little about Maya script beyond its elegant astronomical calculations and calendar. The Maya dominated much of Central America and southern Mexico for 1,000 years before their civilization collapsed about 600 years before the Spaniards reached the New World.

The Maya script began to give up its secrets in the 1950s and ’60s, and progress accelerated in the 1970s. But much remains to be puzzled out from the immense body of carvings and inscriptions that has languished for centuries in jungle ruins and museum closets.

Enter University of Texas archaeologist David Stuart, one of the world’s leading experts on Maya script.

“I had all these boxes of notes and papers in my office, and I was never going to publish every little observation,” he said. “But I thought that if I had a blog, I could talk about new things and bring out some old stuff from my dusty files.”

So five years ago, Stuart started up Maya Decipherment, a blog for scholars and amateurs to post new inscriptions, refine translations and debate the subtleties of Maya language, all in an effort to fill out the history of the civilization.

The work will take years, but with the help of the Internet, the pace is quicker than it has ever been

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

I teach an undergraduate seminar on “Gender, Sexuality, and Popular Culture” with a unit on the romance genre. This year, for the first time ever, the class consists entirely of women. Also new this year is an exercise we invented of an online, collaborative romance narrative. One question that came up in our writing experiment was how, when, and why to include sex scenes. We talked a lot about depictions of sexuality in romance fiction, as well as in the sex-saturated corridors of popular culture. How are the love scenes in romance different from those in pornography or erotica?

...I’m interested in the notion that a feminist is a woman who writes—a woman who dares explore ideas and fantasies that run contrary to patriarchal scripts for feminine docility, submissiveness, and sexual passivity. These scripts are still alive in the impossible contradictions and double standards my students report: be sexy but also pure, demands the culture. If guys sleep around it’s a sign of mastery and control, but if you do it you’re a slut.

Tumblr Panic | The Marketing Whore

Tumblr Panic | The Marketing Whore | Readin', 'Ritin', and (Publishing) 'Rithmetic | Scoop.it

For adult webmasters and bloggers, the real ruckus started when Tumblr prepared itself for a Yahoo buy-out by appearing to purge itself of adult content. The micro-blogging site did this quite effectively when it dealt a dirty blow to Tumblr users by using robots.txt to exclude the search engines from indexing sites labeled as “adult”. This was reported in accurate detail by Bacchus at the long-respected ErosBlog. (it must be noted that Tumblr does not seem to be using the Robots Meta Tag. Do you know about robots.txt files and Robots Meta Tags?)

This was reported by Bacchus before anyone even had an idea that Yahoo & Tumblr were in talks. Just days later, Bacchus again discussed issues for adult bloggers at Tumblr, i.e. how difficult it became to even search your own Tumblr blog & how to back-up your Tumblr site. By this time, the rumors had become official news: Yahoo had purchased Tumblr.

I noticed the difference on Tumblr early on. Links on other sites were leading to missing sites, or sites that just would not load. Where will the adult bloggers go next? Tumblr was a nice, simple place for them the past few years. I don't think they can move to WordPress.com as was suggested for other Tumblr bloggers who don't want to wait for Yahoo to drop.
