It has been six months since the couple built a tiny shop selling mlawi – a thin flatbread made of very fine semolina – outside their home in a popular neighbourhood on the outskirts of El Aouina suburb in Tunis. “We barely managed to get two 10kg semolina bags yesterday," Chokri told The National from behind the counter of his shop.

As countries across Europe grapple with historic inflation levels, a combination of luck and policy has seen Spain buck the trend. According to European Union data, the Harmonized Index of Consumer Price (HICP) inflation across the Eurozone, the 20 countries that use the Euro, increased 7 percent year-on-year in April 2023. However, this measure was far exceeded by food and beverage inflation, which rose by 15 percent. Yet, inflation in Spain was significantly lower, with overall HICP inflation reaching just 3.8 percent and food and beverage inflation is 12.9 percent, the fourth-lowest in the Eurozone.

, Crafting sustainable food systems (SFS) that nourish people and the planet is the imperative of our time. Agriculture and food systems are essential to human survival and are severely threatened by climate change, natural resource degradation and loss of biological diversity. Concurrently, agricultural extensification and unsustainable farming practices accelerate climate change and threaten the ecosystems and many of the natural resources upon which food security depends. Every aspect of these linked problems involves the management of natural resources. Sound natural resource management (NRM), mainstreamed and monitored from farm plot to landscape scale, is central to addressing these challenges and meeting USAID’s ambitious food security and climate objectives. The webinar features keynote speaker Dr. Robert Nasi of the World Agroforestry Center-Center for International Forestry Research, USAID mission colleagues Allison Macalady from Peru and Moffatt Ngugi from Mozambique, and Dr. Selena Ahmed, an Indigenous and traditional food systems expert.
