As the 2022/23 season is coming to an end, FAO estimates for global cereal production in 2022 indicate a year-on-year decline of 1.0 percent, mostly stemming from a fall in maize production, followed by smaller declines in rice and sorghum outputs. Primarily driven by the tighter availability and higher prices, cereal utilization is also estimated to decrease in 2022/23, by 0.9 percent, largely on account of lower feed use of coarse grains and rice as well as a fall in the other uses of all major cereals, while food consumption has continued to grow. With estimated world cereal production exceeding utilization, cereal stocks at the end of seasons in 2023 are estimated to rise marginally (0.2 percent) above their opening levels, with increases in wheat and barley inventories outweighing drawdowns in maize, rice and sorghum stocks. Global trade in cereals in 2022/23 is estimated to contract by 2.3 percent from the 2021/22 level, with estimated falls in trade volumes for all major cereals, except wheat.

L’Indice FAO des prix des céréales a affiché une valeur moyenne de 129,7 points en mai, soit 6,5 points (4,8 pour cent) de moins qu’en avril et un niveau inférieur de 43,9 points (25,3 pour cent) à sa valeur record d’il y a un an. Les prix internationaux du blé ont fléchi de 3,5 pour cent sur un mois, du fait de l’offre mondiale abondante attendue pendant la prochaine campagne (2023-2024) et de la prolongation de l’Initiative céréalière de la mer Noire. Les prix mondiaux du maïs ont chuté de 9,8 pour cent en mai. Les projections favorables pour 2023-2024, qui indiquent un rebond de l’offre mondiale, notamment une augmentation de la production au Brésil et aux États-Unis d’Amérique, deux exportateurs majeurs, ont pesé sur les prix. Le rythme peu soutenu des exportations en partance des États-Unis d’Amérique, ainsi que des annulations d’achats de la part de la Chine, ont également tiré vers le bas les prix mondiaux du maïs. Pour ce qui est des autres céréales secondaires, les prix mondiaux de l’orge et du sorgho ont eux aussi fléchi, respectivement de 9,5 et 9,7 pour cent, sous l’effet de la baisse des prix du maïs et du blé. En revanche, les prix internationaux du blé ont continué à grimper en mai, car des transactions antérieures avec des acheteurs asiatiques ont été exécutées et l’offre s’est resserrée dans certains pays exportateurs, notamment le Viet Nam et le Pakistan.
