They represented farmers’ organisations, food businesses, consumers’ organisations, NGOs, researchers, extension services, professional groups, and administration and public bodies.

International shipping in 2023 was marred by strains in several chokepoints affecting the global movement of goods. Attention very much focused on disruptions of seaborne trade from Ukraine, especially following the end of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July 2023. However, with the implementation of a “humanitarian corridor”, these flows have been largely restored. Although less in the focus, low water levels on several inland waterways also challenged internal transportation and logistics in major exporting countries, including the Rhine in Germany, the Mississippi River in the United States of America and the Tapajos River in Brazil. Low water levels resulting from extreme drought, and exacerbated by the ongoing El Niño event, also capped the size and the number of vessels in the Panama Canal locks. Reductions were first introduced in July 2023, and in January 2024 reached nearly 40 percent of volumes ...

In every corner of Italy, tractors leave the fields to gather in the squares of the most important Italian cities. After taking shape in Germany in the very first days of the year, the primary sector protest quickly spread to France and almost the rest of the European Union. The reasons are now known: increased fuel prices, damage from bad weather or plant diseases that have never been compensated (or only partially compensated), competition from non-European countries, no to synthetic or insect-based food.

In this article, the impact of the Russia–Ukraine conflict on food security in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is analyzed. With Ukraine being recognized as one of the major global grain producers and exporters, the conflict is seen as posing a significant challenge to MENA countries, which are heavily dependent on grain imports from Ukraine. The importance of global linkages in food supply chains and their influence on regional food security is highlighted in this context. Utilizing secondary data from 2002 to 2021 obtained from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the study focuses on demography and food security, analyzing how these factors intertwine with grain export dynamics. The ...
