Optimism Blooms for 2024 U.S. Winter Wheat Production

Optimism Blooms for 2024 U.S. Winter Wheat Production | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Optimism has begun to bloom for the 2024 winter wheat harvest, given the factors that have helped boost the U.S. wheat outlook. Despite the lower total planted area (January Winter Wheat and Canola Seedings report estimated winter wheat area down 6% to 13.9 Mha vs previous year), USDA’ outlook anticipates a 2% yield increase to 49.5 bu/acre (3.33 MT/hectare).

ALGERIA to miss its 2024 food import reduction target amid worsening drought conditions

ALGERIA to miss its 2024 food import reduction target amid worsening drought conditions | MED-Amin network | Scoop.it

Algeria is set to become the world’s fifth largest buyer of soft wheat in 2024, as imports are projected to increase 11% compared to 2023, reaching 7.2 million tons. The need to resort to more imports is primarily due to water scarcity which has particularly impacted Algeria’s cereal production following a prolonged period of drought. Under its 2020-2024 Agriculture Roadmap, Algeria had set itself the goal of cutting as much as $2.5 billion from total annual food imports of around $10 billion in recent years. These plans, however, are being challenged by volatile rainfall patterns. To reduce the impact of drought on its food production systems, Algeria will need to focus on mechanization and economies of scale to increase annual agricultural yields.

Russia's wheat production in 2024/25 may exceed last year’s figures

Local analysts continue to raise 2024/25 Russia’s wheat crop forecast amid persisting favorable weather conditions for winter wheat development.

Wheat harvest estimates now exceed the current year's figure of 92.8 million mt rising to 93.6 million mt, which would be the second-largest harvest in history after 2022, when 105 million mt were harvested.

The winter wheat harvest in 2024 is estimated at 67.7 million mt versus 63.8 million mt in 2023, while the spring wheat harvest is expected to be 25.9 million mt versus 28.9 million mt a year earlier.

Weather conditions for the new harvest have remained favorable over the past few months, resulting winter crop conditions that are above average for this period.

Weather models are forecasting mild temperatures in most winter cro

Over half a billion tons of grains, oilseeds, rice and pulses are transhipped annually via seaborne routes around the world. Owing to its solid reliability and cost efficiency, the maritime transportation of agricultural commodities has expanded over time, exerting increasing pressure on a small number of global ‘chokepoints’ – critical junctures with limited throughput capacity which accommodate exceptional volumes of trade flows.

Over the past several years, the functioning of some of the world’s major chokepoints has been negatively impacted by a number of climatic and geopolitical developments, the most recent examples being the drought-related restrictions on the Panama Canal, challenging river navigatio...
