Moving Ember.js Handlebars templates into Rails the asset pipeline

Well, after getting the basics to work I decided to clean up the mess that was quickly becoming of the HTML and found the wonderful HandlebarsAssets gem that promises to compile Handlebars down to JavaScript and serve it through the Rails 3.1+ asset pipeline. After doing so I can say with confidence I managed to hit every single stumbling block along the way so I decided to write down where I went wrong. Hopefully this helps some other poor soul before he has to dive deep into the bowels of Ember like I had to :).

Using KnockoutJS with SignalR in ASP.NET MVC

Using KnockoutJS with SignalR in ASP.NET MVC | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

To me these two libraries seem like a match made in heaven. SignalR calling a JavaScript function to alter data, and Knockout automatically updating the UI, awesome!

In this post I’ll show how you can use KnockoutJS and SignalR together to create real-time web application with little effort. I’m going to create a very basic example of a web page showing a list of exchange rates hooked up using KnockoutJS. I’ll then create a server side page to update the data and use SignalR to call a JavaScript function to update the JavaScript model.

Building a FileReader Service For AngularJS: Promises, Promises

Building a FileReader Service For AngularJS: Promises, Promises | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Let’s build an AngularJS service to wrap an HTML 5 FileReader object.

The first question a curious person might ask is: why create a service? Why not use a FileReader directly from the code in a model or controller?

Here are two reasons:

1) To build an adapter around FileReader that works with promises instead of call back functions (which is what this post will focus on).

2) To achieve greater flexibility. Services in AngularJS can be decorated or replaced at runtime.

To understand the advantages of #1, we’ll need to learn about promises in AngularJS. For more general information about promises, see “What’s so great about JavaScript Promises”.

ExtJS 4.2. App Walkthrough

ExtJS 4.2. App Walkthrough | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Over the last few months, I’ve been building (and reading about building) a number of applications using the excellent ExtJS 4.2.0. I thought it might be fun/instructive to do something of a short “walkthrough” of the process of building an app…so that’s what I’m going to do .

In the next series of posts, I’m going to build an MVC-style ExtJS 4.2.0 app, walking through the code and strategy at each step along the way. I hope that it will be entertaining/instructive to code along with me.

What are Generators?

What are Generators? | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

It looks like generators are actually going to make it into Javascript. In fact, generators recently landed in V8. This is so exciting! Lately they’ve been all the rage. But what is it? With this post I’ll do my best to explain at a basic level what they are.
At its simplest form, a generator represents a sequence of values – essentially it is an iterator. In fact, the interface of a generator object is a just an iterator for which you’d keep calling next() on it until it runs out of values.

Jan Hesse's insight:

Wow, this looks so very much like the .Net 4.5 async keyword when looked at how it could replace promises for those cases.

A piece of interface is represented with some HTML (and obviously styled with CSS). Also it can be equiped with JavaScript usually describing how to react to user's actions.

AngularJS Controller Tutorial With Example

AngularJS Controller Tutorial With Example | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

AngularJS Controller Tutorial with examples. Nested Controllers, Inheritance in Angular Controllers. Using $scope object in Controllers.

Controllers are nothing but plain JavaScript functions which are bound to a particular scope. Don’t worry if this sounds gibberish. Shortly this all will make sense once we create a small Hello World using controller. Controllers are used to add logic to your view. Views are HTML pages. These pages simply shows the data that we bind to them using two-way data binding in Angular (Note: Two-way data binding is explained in previous tutorial). Basically it is Controllers responsibility to glue the Model (data) with the View.

Building a JavaScript Library with Grunt.js

Building a JavaScript Library with Grunt.js | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

A new release of a typical, non-trivial JavaScript project needs to run unit tests, concatenate all source files into one file and minify the result. Some of them also use code generators, coding style validators or other build time tools.

This post explains how to use Grunt.js to build JavaScript library. Grunt.js requires Node.js and npm to run, so first sections explain what those are, how to install them and how to use them. You can feel free to skip those sections if you have already worked with npm. The fourth and fifth sections cover how to configure Grunt and a number of typical Grunt tasks.

AngularJS Tutorial — Build an App Using Directives and Data Binding

AngularJS Tutorial — Build an App Using Directives and Data Binding | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Angular gives developers the ability to write front end code without resorting to directly manipulating the DOM. This tutorial will get you started with the framework by building an app using directives and data binding to define dynamic views and controllers.

If you’re familiar with CoffeeScript (not required by Angular) you’ll have more fun with this article, but a working knowledge of JavaScript should suffice.

Angular claims to extend the vocabulary of HTML instead of hiding the DOM behind JavaScript. The philosophy is that HTML is pretty good on its own, but we can add a few more elements and attributes in order to build a powerful, dynamic templating language that you’re already familiar with.

AngularJS WebSocket Service Example

At my curent company we are using Angular.js for a new desktop application (yes, a desktop application, but I won’t get into that). Our app gets its data and events from a web service via a WebSocket connection. Angular comes bundled with some great tools to connect to REST servers, but it doesn’t come with anything to help you with real-time data (and it probably shouldn’t).

Ember JS: Dynamic Tree View

Ember JS: Dynamic Tree View | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

A tree consists of nodes and branches. Each branch can contain more nodes and/or branches. The branches can be represented by nested ul tags and the nodes by li tags within them. We will create 2 Ember views, one for the nodes and the other for the branches. An Ember view has a tagName property which will be assigned to the html tag it creates. We will use an Ember CollectionView to represent the branches. A collection view renders its content within the itemViewClass you specify.

Iterators and generators in ECMAScript 6

Iterators and generators in ECMAScript 6 | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The iterator pattern enables unified and simple access to the elements stored in data structures. Generators are lightweight coroutines. Think: functions that can be suspended and resumed. Among other things, they help with implementing iterators.

This blog post explains how iterators and generators work in ECMAScript 6. The iterator protocol has recently changed, this post explains the new protocol.

Knockout.js vs Backbone.js

Knockout.js vs Backbone.js | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

These are 2 popular javascript frameworks, supposedly designed to help/facilitate the building of rich client application on the web.

To me, this means web apps with non-trivial interactive UI, which would be difficult to manage with just jQuery.

What’s wrong with jQuery, you say? Well, jQuery is awesome, but it’s too low-level as far as app-development is concerned. How are you going to manage it when the complexity increases? It gets hairy very quickly.

AngularJS with IndexedDB using a helper library

AngularJS with IndexedDB using a helper library | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

In working on my podcast app, podrad.io, I wanted to be able to persist data, so that users could keep their subscriptions between visits, without losing anything, and without my needing to do anything server-side. When I was writing podrad.io, however, my goal was to get something written as quickly as I could, get it out, and then iterate on it as I have time. With those goals in mind, I used LocalStorage for persistence, it was simple, and did the job. Now, I’m going back and looking at what needs to be added or fixed, and the data persistence is top on my list.
