How close are we to AI that surpasses human intelligence? | information analyst | Scoop.it
For decades, superintelligent artificial intelligence (AI) has been a staple of science fiction, embodied in books and movies about androids, robot uprisings, and a world taken over by computers. As far-fetched as those plots often were, they played off a very real mix of fascination, curiosity, and trepidation regarding the potential to build intelligent machines.

What to Know About Claude 2, Anthropic's Rival to ChatGPT

What to Know About Claude 2, Anthropic's Rival to ChatGPT | information analyst | Scoop.it

Anthropic, an AI company, released its latest large language model-powered chatbot, Claude 2, last week, the latest development in a race to build bigger and better artificial intelligence models.

Claude 2 is an improvement on Anthropic’s previous AI model, Claude 1.3, particularly in terms of its ability to write code based on written instructions and the size of its “context window,” which means users can now input entire books and ask Claude 2 questions based on their content. These improvements suggest Claude 2 is now in the same league as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the models which power OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, like OpenAI’s models, Claude 2 still exhibits stereotype bias and ‘hallucinates’ — in other words, it makes things up. And there remain larger questions about the race between AI companies to bring out more powerful AI models without addressing the risks they pose.

You would be hard-pressed not to have heard how AI is evolving at such a fast rate. Tools like ChatGBT and Google Bard weren’t even a thing before 2023. With any innovation, there is both excitement and fear. While there is room for caution, leaders can tap into the power of AI. As I shared in Digital Leadership, evolving technology enables and empowers leaders to seize the moment and look for ways to fundamentally improve teaching, learning, and leadership.

How to Use AI to Do Stuff: An Opinionated Guide :: Ethan Mollick (7/15/23)

How to Use AI to Do Stuff: An Opinionated Guide :: Ethan Mollick (7/15/23) | information analyst | Scoop.it
Increasingly powerful AI systems are being released at an increasingly rapid pace. This week saw the debut of Claude 2, likely the second most capable AI system available to the public. The week before, Open AI released Code Interpreter, the most sophisticated mode of AI yet available. The week before that, some AIs got the ability to see images.

And yet not a single AI lab seems to have provided any user documentation. Instead, the only user guides out there appear to be Twitter influencer threads. Documentation-by-rumor is a weird choice for organizations claiming to be concerned about proper use of their technologies, but here we are.

I can’t claim that this is going to be a complete user guide, but it will serve as a bit of orientation to the current state of AI. I have been putting together a Getting Started Guide to AI for my students (and interested readers) every few months, and each time, it requires major modifications. The last couple of months have been particularly insane.

This guide is opinionated, based on my experience, and focused on how to pick the right tool to do things. I have written separately about the kinds of tasks you may want AI to do, which might be useful to read first.

Experimental evidence on the productivity effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Experimental evidence on the productivity effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence | information analyst | Scoop.it

Automation has historically displaced human workers in factories (e.g., automotive manufacturing) or in performing routine computational tasks. Will generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT disrupt the labor market by making educated professionals obsolete, or will these tools complement their skills and enhance productivity? Noy and Zhang examined this issue in an experiment that recruited college-educated professionals to complete incentivized writing tasks. Participants assigned to use ChatGPT were more productive, efficient, and enjoyed the tasks more. Participants with weaker skills benefited the most from ChatGPT, which carries policy implications for efforts to reduce productivity inequality through AI. —EEU

We examined the productivity effects of a generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the assistive chatbot ChatGPT, in the context of midlevel professional writing tasks. In a preregistered online experiment, we assigned occupation-specific, incentivized writing tasks to 453 college-educated professionals and randomly exposed half of them to ChatGPT. Our results show that ChatGPT substantially raised productivity: The average time taken decreased by 40% and output quality rose by 18%. Inequality between workers decreased, and concern and excitement about AI temporarily rose. Workers exposed to ChatGPT during the experiment were 2 times as likely to report using it in their real job 2 weeks after the experiment and 1.6 times as likely 2 months after the experiment.
