The article examines how Airbnb continues to push growth in 2025 while the traditional hotel sector fights to hold its ground — not in a straightforward victory for one or the other, but rather a shift toward a segmented lodging landscape.
Key takeaways
Airbnb’s corporate momentum: Airbnb reported revenue growth (13 % Y/Y) and strong profitability in Q2 2025, signalling robust global demand for the short-term rental model. Host-level occupancy challenges: Despite aggregate growth, many U.S. hosts face declining occupancy (around ~50–56 %) as supply pours in, especially in suburban and rural markets. Pricing power in STRs: Short-term rentals are offsetting softer occupancy with rising ADR — up nearly 7 % Y/Y in summer and 24.9 % over a longer horizon — boosting host RevPAR.

Airbnb has a big opportunity in hotels. But CEO Brian Chesky makes it all sound a little too easy. It's not a big investment, he said, and Airbnb won't have to spend a lot on marketing for it. Signing up hotels? Not a problem — they have phone numbers.

As reported by HOTREC, an umbrella association representing the hospitality sector in Europe, the European Employers’ Institute (EEI) conducted a comprehensive analysis through Rexecode to explore the labour productivity gap between the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) from 1995 to 2019. This research provides a detailed examination at both the country and sector levels, aiming to understand the underlying causes of Europe’s lagging productivity and its implications for competitiveness and growth.
Key Findings on Productivity Dynamics
The study pinpoints the major EU economies—Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands—as the primary contributors to the slower productivity growth in the EU compared to the US. Despite their significant roles in the European economy, these countries have not matched the productivity advancements seen in the US.
Conversely, newer EU Member States in Central and Eastern Europe showed faster productivity growth rates than the US during the same period. However, their progress has not been enough to bridge the gap created by the larger EU economies.

The US hotel market is splitting in two. Luxury bookings are surging as affluent travellers spend freely, while midscale and budget properties face declining occupancy, weaker rates, and fewer bookings. Analysts warn that the apparent health of the sector masks a growing divide driven by income inequality and shifting consumer behaviour.
Key takeaways
Luxury resilience: High-end brands like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis report a 2.9% revenue increase this year, even as economy hotels see a 3.1% decline. Affluent demand: Wealthy travellers are paying $1,500–$3,500 per night for premium stays, buoyed by stock market gains and real estate wealth. Middle-market weakness: Domestic demand has softened, with lower- and middle-income households cutting back on travel amid inflation and high debt levels. Falling inbound tourism: International visits to the US are projected to drop over 8% in 2025, representing $8.3 billion in lost spending.

A new survey of 5,000 European travellers finds that budget hotels are outperforming premium properties in both guest volume and satisfaction, as travellers increasingly prioritise affordability and value over luxury.
Key takeaways
Resilient performance: Budget hotels are maintaining strong demand despite broader economic challenges across Europe. Shift in perception: 39% of travellers see less value in premium hotels, while nearly a third describe budget stays as “a great experience.” Affordability first: 87% of respondents spend under €120 per night, underscoring price sensitivity even among business travellers.

"Airbnb will launch some type of membership program to give guests a reason to book a hotel on Airbnb rather than earn points elsewhere. It certainly won't be a clone of hotel group loyalty programs — that's not Airbnb's style.
It's highly likely that Airbnb will launch a loyalty or membership program, especially because it has vowed to get much deeper into the hotel business." The signs are everywhere:
Airbnb is currently evaluating loyalty programs, a source close to Airbnb told Skift on Wednesday. In discussing loyalty, CEO Brian Chesky told reporters in May that “something big is coming” and “we’re kind of in the middle of development right now.” In August, Chesky told financial analysts “a loyalty or membership program is a very, very compelling thing for Airbnb,” and that the company is “sometimes at a competitive disadvantage vis-à-vis OTAs and hotels” without one. Chesky also said then that he “absolutely thinks you should see something from us in the future. Not imminently, but in the future.” Chesky has long favored a membership program over a points pro
