Moodle is more than a content repository, it is an online environment where learning and collaboration can take place. The purpose of a good Moodle unit structure is to give students an optimal user experience, provide a clear overview of the unit and let them know what they are expected to do and when. Use this resource to help you structure your Moodle unit to plan and create a clear, consistent and dynamic flow to your unit.

Just in Time Teaching (JiTT) is a series of evidence-based Infographics that address foundational clinical teaching principles (e.g. setting expectations, questioning techniques, 5 micro-skills, bedside teaching, feedback, and coaching). We have included review questions for each section to highlight key learning points to the reader. Ideal answers are included. Feedback is welcomed. In addition, clinically specific teaching techniques include content specific to internal/family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and ethics.

So let’s take a closer look at the notion of third space. And to do that we need to go into a bit of theory. Third space is grounded in Celia Whitchurch’s work, which goes back over a decade (Whitchurch 2008, 2018). Whitchurch frames this as that space in which academics and professional staff come together: in our example, our famous Professor Beeblebrox, the learning technologist, the team from the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the AV team. But third space is not about structures and job titles, though they are important, it’s about how we work and who we work with. And leadership theory can help us understand this even more deeply, in particular Distributed Leadership (Spillaine, 2006), leadership as practice (Youngs, 2017) and relational leadership (Uhl-Bien, 2006).

Pre-recorded video in traditional classes Within an existing in-person course, adding some ‘videos classes’ can also be very worthwhile. I’ve had success with recording worked example videos using a tablet and whiteboard – demonstrating the basics that someone might be too embarrassed to ask about. I’ve also used ‘video pre-labs’ to prepare students for in-person labs. Creating a pre-recorded video interview with an expert allows them to be part of your class for future editions of your course. Videos are more compact than in-person lectures: the content of a 50-minute lecture can be covered in about 15 minutes of video footage, which fits with the audience’s attention span without becoming tedious to watch. Everybody has a different style when recording video: some prefer to talk straight to the camera, while I prefer to have a conversation with a colleague as to me it feels more natural to explain things to someone who is physically there. Some like to talk fully scripted, others like to improvise. I prefer something in the middle where my co-presenter and I have a detailed idea of what we want to cover, but apart from the first line we don’t use a script. I find filming is much easier if you do a whole bunch of separate five minute videos, as I can usually avoid stuffing up for that long. While it is a lot of work producing a fully online course, once it is made you can easily use it many times for different audiences. The same applies to video content created for in-person classes. The academic workload per student reached, spread over multiple years, is much lower than for traditional courses.

Students, who should be present in the classroom for their regular classes, are at their homes today. Similarly, teachers who would normally be ready for lesson plans, hands-on exercises, and ways to strengthen interactions with their students, did not have a classroom to attend. They have become online teachers.
But, like they always do, they stay dedicated and do their work to the best of their abilities. Our teachers, households, and neighbourhoods have been charged with exploring alternative ways to help children, due to COVID-19 forcing schools to close since last year.

The approach course teams take when designing courses and programs of study is critical to student success. Creating active and authentic learning experiences is a vital aspect of learning design. Designing such experiences using digital solutions and ecosystems requires course teams to continually develop their digital literacy within the context of various academic disciplines and the potential professional pathways of those disciplines. With these things in mind, Teesside University and Jisc UK have developed a Digital Learning Design Framework and Toolkit. The framework and toolkit were created to help nurture and cultivate the digital confidence and fluencies of teaching staff who design and deliver courses, challenging them to think about learning design and the intersection of pedagogy and digital solutions to map the student learning journey. The framework and toolkit provide course teams with opportunities to do things differently.
