Les 2/3 de la flotte française y sont rattachés, même s'ils n'y dorment pas en permanence. De quoi motiver une défense multicouches qui vise l'étanchéité.
Un électrochoc

En regardant la magnifique rade de Toulon, difficile de ne pas penser à Pearl Harbour, le 7 décembre 1941, lors de l'attaque japonaise sans préavis. La désinhibition des compétiteurs russes et chinois peut faire craindre pareille vilénie, c'est pourquoi la marine a constamment amélioré sa protection défense et sa protection aérienne depuis 25 ans. L'attaque à quai contre l'USS Cole, par un embarcation chargée d'explosifs avait été l'électrochoc, en 2000, dans le port d'Aden (Yémen). Mais depuis le progrès a introduit les drones de surface, sous-marins et aériens. De quoi faire redouter une attaque massive, sans préavis, avec des essaims de drones dans tous les milieux. La marine serait-elle dépassée, elle évite soigneusement de répondre à pareille question qui pourrait fragiliser ses défenses.
La marine expérimente

Par contre et réellement, comme l'armée de l'air et de l'espace sur toutes ses bases aériennes, la marine bûche et expérimente. Elle teste actuellement une embarcation suédoise, le CB90 de Saab, dont trois exemplaires ont été prêtés par la marine suédoise pour un an et demi. L'objectif est plutôt dans les opérations spéciales, les opérations amphibies, que dans la protection défense, mais comme la marine a eu un problème avec son fournisseur de vedettes blindées (Ufast), elle se retrouve... avec seulement deux exemplaires sur les 15 promises. Il faut donc vite combler les trous et la CB90 pourrait y contribuer (avec d'autres solutions). Il s’agit autant de défendre le port, que les unités précieuses (sous-marins nucléaires, porte-avions, pétrolier-ravitaileur) lors de leurs mouvements en rade, quand elles sont vulnérables.
Libérer les fusiliers marins de cette tâche rébarbative

La marine teste aussi un drone de surface du nord de l'Europe pour effectuer des tâches de surveillance, et donc libérer les fusiliers marins de cette tâche rébarbative. Ils restent néanmoins les experts de la protection défense, prêts à intervenir sur la moindre détection suspecte. Leurs semi-rigides pourront ainsi et aussi être préservés. L'attractivité de la spécialité sera aussi plus forte : un signe, les femmes y viennent en plus grand nombre qu'avant, le signe que le contre-amiral Samuel Majou, l'actuel patron des forces spéciales a réussi à transformer l'essai initié par ses prédécesseurs (Rebour notamment, l'homme qui a tout changé dans ce domaine) et amélioré l'attractivité.
Parade, Milad, Nerod F5

Face aux drones aériens conventionnels (hors FPV), la marine déploie aussi le Parade, en complément du Milad et des fusils brouilleurs Nerod F5 de MC2 Technlogies, devenus équipements courants des patrouilles de fusiliers, au même titre que le chien (un atout pour la marine), le HK416 (une valeur sûre) et le Glock 17, en double dotation. Les mitrailleuses de 12,7 mm revisitées par la PME TR-Equipement pour les navires peut aussi servir au port, en défense statique. En cas de besoin, la 36F peut fournir des mesures actives de sûreté aérienne avec ses propres mitrailleurs, et les tireurs d'élite du Commando Hubert, parmi les meilleurs au monde. Enfin, le 54e régiment d'artillerie de Hyères peut, au claquement de doigt, fournir des équipes pour déployer des missiles sol-air Mistral 3, afin de renforcer encore la couche basse de défense aérienne. Les frégates pouvant fournir, par contre, de l'Aster 15 et 30 d'Eurosam.

Si l'étanchéité n'est pas totale, on s'en rapproche toutefois.
