Nearly one-in-ten U.S. adults (8%) get news through Twitter, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center, in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Compared with the 30% of Americans who get news on Facebook, Twitter news consumers stand out as younger, more mobile and more educated.
Women really, really like their mobile devices. According to a new study from Time Inc. and Nuance Digital Marketing, 60 percent of women name their mobiles as the most important devices in their lives (significantly higher than men, at 43 percent).
Not only is their smartphone the first thing she looks at in the morning (for 78 percent), it consumes their free time throughout the day, when they use it for engaging with social media, texting and shopping. While this time spent on their mobiles would suggest opportunities to advertise to women, fully 91 percent of women dislike ads they consider intrusive.

As consumers grow more accustomed to speedy online deliveries, eBay is hoping to exceed consumer demand. To accomplish this, the auction giant just acquired Shutl, a marketplace that uses a network of couriers to deliver local goods on a same-day basis.
According to Devin Wenig, president of eBay Marketplaces, consumption on the auction network has shifted strongly toward local purchases, probably as a result of eBay Now, a service released last October that lets shoppers order products from local stores and receive them in as little as an hour.
“Today, approximately 75 percent of what people buy is local, found within 15 miles from their home,” said Wenig. “Traditional retail isn’t going away. But it is transforming, and that creates enormous opportunity within the $10 trillion total commerce market.”...

I'm still not convinced that curation is all that new or different than blogging or other online publishing activities. (Blogging is not dead.) Nor am I convinced it is the most important thing you can do in terms of marketing. (And just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't sway me either; like momma always said about if so & so jumped off a bridge...) But I don't think curation can be overlooked much longer. Curation needs to be evaluated for several major factors:
a) can it fit within your scope (Do you have the time & skill set? Can you do this in house or should you hire?)
b) purpose (to maintain existing clients/customers, to reach new ones?)
b) where would it fit? (Not all curation sites are the same; some are more suitable for products, brands, B2B or B2C reach, demographics, etc.)

While B2B marketers are beginning to adopt B2C best practices when it comes to e-commerce, B2B marketers have traditionally invested more of their budgets into content marketing than their B2C counterparts, making it interesting to see how both sides measure up in this rapidly-growing area. There are many more similarities than one might expect.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:
Likely not a surprise; at one time or another, most of us have gotten so frustrated we walked out of a store. Ditto abandoned online shopping carts.
At the day job, we've been super busy prepping a major new study on Internet radio usage on behalf of our clients Pandora, Spotify, and TuneIn. We will be releasing all kinds of new data points over the next few weeks, but as we've just wrapped up presenting the data at Advertising Week in NYC, I couldn't wait to post this infographic our crack team whipped up summarizing some of the results.
The big takeaway--Internet radio is now consumed by the majority of online Americans. Yes, it seems like we all use these services, but this is the first time in history that we have been able to state that Internet radio listening is truly mainstream behavior.
I have entertained the idea of selling my smaller paintings on Ebay, but there was such a negative stigma from other artists that you are devaluing your artwork. But I have heard success stories too. Give this article a read and tell me what you think...and if you have a store on eBay, post your link. ;)
In the world of online retail, understanding how to run successful promotions and strategically price products takes more than just an Economics Supply and Demand course. Humans have an innate inclination to respond to certain types of prices, this is what we call psychological pricing.
While Hallmark was run by a man — or men with a few “poor working girls,” and can be seen as The Man, you can’t deny the serious dedication the company had to targeted marketing. They spent oodles of dollars and gobs of time focused on what sold and who bought it — including focus groups of women. If women weren’t buying the charming illustrations of women in their dainties and picture-laden puns of underthings, Hallmark wouldn’t have made them.Let alone so many of them.
...So one has to at least include the probability that women’s adoration of the female form, our so-called bisexuality or ability to be more fluid in our sexuality, has been around for a long time and perhaps has as much to do with “sex sells,” sexist ads, and our culture’s consumption of pornography as the patriarchy does.

I don't agree with many of Seth's points; and not just because I'm a stubborn book lover. Here are my top 4 (quick) cautions:
The ever-increasing price of ebooks no longer makes ebook as seductive, so I and many others are back to paper book purchases.
Libraries are more than books -- especially to middle and lower class folks.
"Single tasking" is far more productive than multi-tasking, and, hopefully sooner rather than later, the cultre will move back to focusing on what one's doing.
Then there's the whole "power of the object" thing, which motivates not just collectors but humans at large.
Online auction site Wensy closed down Thursday with users saying they had no advance warning. Founder Darren Bock said technical issues combined with the loss of Google ad revenue forced him to close the site that specialized in collectibles.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:
Unfortunate; but there are many insights into online business models here.
eBay is re-testing a tool for sellers to help them entice shoppers to purchase their listings. The eBay Sales Maximizer lets sellers offer promotions such as Volume Offers that encourage buyers to spend more.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:
Don't get too excited tho; it seems this is in very early testing and quite buggy. And, with it's usual focus on being another Walmart (sellers of new navy blue sweaters, electronics, etc.), it likely won't help antiques & collectibles sellers much either.
Economic Times Why retail giant M&S prefer 'womanism' to feminism in its new ad? Economic Times It's like "girl power": feminism with the awkward bits stripped away. It's the feminism where clothes are presumed important.
National Thrift Shop Day: a day to promote the ethical and economic opportunities of shopping at thrift stores. Why should collectors care? Because among the common secondhand goods, lie the uncommon treasures.
