The Egyptian antiquities ministry has rejected a proposal by the finance ministry to rent out the country's major archaeological sites to international tourism companies in an attempt to reduce the government's budget deficit.

When austerity goes too far... Talk about a true proposed sell-out! This would have been far worse than the use of a Beatles song in a commercial or something.

Lingerie News Round-Up

Lingerie News Round-Up | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Julianna Rae has put out an infographic about how many people are sleeping in the nude. If those numbers are true, I guess that means that the the 30 billion dollar lingerie market is due to the sales of playwear and daywear, not sleepwear. (Hmmm, maybe if they brought nylon and more vintage style nightgowns back...)

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Other news includes the closing of 18 Saudi lingerie stores.

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

as thrilled as i've been to see ad campaigns featuring bold, geometric prints and a-line mini dresses, all topped with bouffants and beehives and multiple layers of lashes, i'm also, at times, annoyed at how other fashion writers are presenting these to the masses. titles and captions enticing people to be "go" or "become" mod are making me cringe, for reasons similar to the ones i've listed in a piece i wrote in november entitled no such thing as a punk fad: the effects of mainstream fashion borrowing from subculture style. in it, i briefly mention mod fashion and promise to write about it at a later date and so here we are.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Love the "it's not because you wear a mod-inspired dress that you are a mod" line; hate the lack of capitalization, as it makes for more difficult and annoying reading. Meet in the middle and consider what fashion, movements, and trends are in terms of culture, sales, and consumerism.

A discussion about lingerie designer knock-offs.

A discussion about lingerie designer knock-offs. | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

"No, we're not talking about the fraud of misrepresenting lingerie or other garments or using their logos and labels; but we're talking about cheaper versions of designer pieces.

...Fashion has had knock-offs since it began. And let's be honest; there really are few design innovations in fashion because the human form hasn't really changed. True innovations in textiles and structure are patented and protected. But the look and details can't be protected, not even the red soles of women's shoes. And, overall, they shouldn't be. For, like recipes, you can't protect something nearly anyone can come up with.  Or can become inspired by, such as vintage looks. (Heaven knows how much of this "inspired by the past" has played a part in fashion design history.)

Don't mistake this for downplaying the significance of designers or their work. But there are realities to be faced. And that includes, as Coral aka Treacle noted, options for garments and undergarments, including less expensive pieces and a wider spectrum of sizes and fit. Fashion as an industry survives by meeting the needs of all, not a (somewhat literal) slim few."

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

I'm all about intellectual property rights, acknowledging and respecting one's work; but when it comes to the topic of "fashion knock-offs," I can't help but feel as if designers are judging consumers rather than appraising their own strategies

5 questions with Joseph from CarnivalOfTheManiac on etsy

5 questions with Joseph from CarnivalOfTheManiac on etsy | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Creatively conjured and vintage paraphernalia with a heavy lean towards mens suits and blazers, thick plastic eyeglasses and sunglasses, boots boots and more boots, oddball and kitsch housewares, mid century modern treasures, and various forms of travel and utility bags.

1. How did you get into vintage?

It was a combination of many things. A love of fashion, of course. A love of the past to the point of pathological nostalgia. A love of a time when things that were made better, made with more care, etc. On top of all of that, I grew up in a flea market going/selling family, so I was aware of and OK with second hand wares. And of course, it's always about a girl. It was a girlfriend I had when I was 16 that first got me going to thrift stores.

2. What is your favourite vintage item and how did you acquire it?
Isn't that like asking a parent to pick their favorite son or daughter? I could list at least 20 things off the top of my head, but the first that came to mind is a 1930s custom made tuxedo jacket that fits me like a glove and will never be for sale.

3. How did you come by the shop name? And is there a meaning to it?
The shop name was born out of my photographic experiments with self portraiture, documentation, and exploitation. Long before I was a peddler of vintage goods, I was an avid photographer, using mainly my Flickr account to showcase whatever it was that I was doing. This is the photo that started it all. NSFW.

www.flickr.com/photos/boristheblade/133171055/

If you look through my photos, you will see much mania, many maniacs, and certainly a strong connection to the carnies of the past.

4. Your shop has a very distinct atmosphere and presentation. How do you go about creating that environment for your customers?

Again, it is all an extension of the photography. I can't really explain it - it's just who I am. For better and for worse, I couldn't do it any other way. I am an apprehensive showman with a penchant for the absurd and the dramatic.

5. What is it about Etsy?

It's easy, it's cheap, it's massive, and it's not eBay!

Make sure to spread the love and check out Joseph´s links:

Quit Your Day Job: June Designs

Quit Your Day Job: June Designs | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it
Pricing is difficult for a lot of sellers, but it shouldn’t be. It’s unfortunately common practice among artists to undervalue their work. I don’t quite understand why — maybe because they feel bad about getting paid for doing something they like? Or maybe it’s just a common trait for artists to be modest or insecure? I say be confident about your items — only you can determine how much they’re worth, because only you know the investment in time and money that it took to make them.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

This is another one of those Etsy seller interviews. The information on pricing is sound; even if it is slanted towards crafters and artists, it applies to antique dealers etc. who have time and money invested in their inventory as well.
